Supêsutoraberâzu (2000)
Thrilling beyond my expectations
I was lucky enough to be in Singapore at the time of the release of this movie, and I'm certainly glad for it. The movie was one of the more artistic and stylish action movies that I have ever seen, with some libertine cinematography and a dash of the fantastic. I'm not a big fan of subtitles, but the humor shines through in any language, and it's definitely worth seeing.
Although it is a "bank heist gone wrong" movie, it is surprisingly well done, with vibrant--if slightly shallow--characters, understated and well-placed special effects, a hip, hip soundtrack, and a good sense of humor about itself. Highly recommended.
A Life Less Ordinary (1997)
A Postmodernist Masterpiece
I rate this movie very highly, mostly because it is simply an incredible movie. It deserves a second or third viewing to truly understand all the imagery it contains, but even on first viewing it leaves you thinking. Some of my friends told me that they disliked it, but when I watched it with them again, their opinions changed entirely. I think any disapproval of this movie results necessarily from a misunderstanding. Definitely a keeper--a beautiful love story that works on a number of levels.
