Reluctant Justice (1995)
Brilliant surrealistic Camerawork
I just saw this film and I was really impressed how well the story was told visually. The story line jumps back and forth between innocent suburbia and the filth and grime of organized crime in the city as a son sets out to avenge his father's mysterious death. The camera moves from bright sundrenched suburbs to the darkness of inner city life. The color saturation of the picture seems to change, getting subsequently less colorful as the main character gets caught up in that world. Some of the plot twists however seem a little contrived but I was caught up enough in the story so that it didn't really bother me.
The Secret of Roan Inish (1994)
Modern Fairy Tale
The film starts a little slow but the wonderful cinematography makes up for it and by the time the main character, a little girl, comes back from the city to her grandparent's cottage in the Irish countryside I was completely captured. The poetic style of the film is really different and even though I usually don't like slow movies this one was an exception.
