Mah nakorn (2004)
The perfect romantic comedy - Thai style.
Granted the setting is vastly different (contemporary Bangkok) and there's not a drop of blood to be seen, "Citizen Dog" is a brilliant sophomore work from the director of "Tears of the Black Tiger" -- one of the best and most original movies I've seen in the last ten years.
Retaining the odd color schemes in a somewhat muted form, and excellent choice of soundtracks, this movie is really a lot of fun. A large ensemble of bizarre characters completes the picture including a dead motorcycle taxi driver, an amnesiac addicted to licking things, and a talking, chain-smoking teddy bear.
Follow the adventures of Pod as he moves to Bangkok from the country, takes a number of different jobs and meets Jin, the girl of his dreams. Along the way, a number of really weird things happen and everyone gets a tail, but hey, love's like that.
Dip huet gai tau (1990)
The ending was the only bad part
This movie was absolutely incredible. Very moving and powerful -- great acting on all sides.
I would have given this a 10 but for the ridiculous ending. It was just too over the top and didn't fit the mood of the rest of the movie. It would have been fine in a full action pic like Hard Boiled or the Killer, but it was really out of place here IMO. Other than the finale however, the movie was truly excellent.
Starship Troopers (1997)
Good action flick, but skips way too much from the book.
While I enjoyed this movie as a great action flick with some interesting points, I can't help thinking that the book was 10 times better. The boot camp looked like Disney land, compared to a few tents in the middle of a prairie. Going into battle against superior numbers with nothing more than automatic weapons and body armour that doesn't even cover the entire body is pretty ridiculous.
I got to say that the tv show comes closer to my view of the book. They brought in the Skinnies, as well as the marauder suits, and full armour.
Why couldn't they do a full battle suit movie like the book -- hand flamers, micro nukes from shoulder launchers, etc. That's the way it should have been done. I'd love to see the pod landings as the book described it.
They also missed out too much of the psychological aspects and the character development -- boot camp, OCS, etc that the book spent more time on, than the actual battles.
Oh well. As an action flick, it's great, but I want to see a full translation of the book.
Dune (1984)
Nothing compared to the book
I read the book at least twice before I saw the movie, and I've got to say that the images I had in my mind from reading the book were completely (and very disappointingly) destroyed after viewing the movie.
The Fremen wear stillsuits and nothing else. Where are the flowing robes desert nomads wear? More importantly, where are the head coverings. Still suits should cover the whole head otherwise vast amounts of moisture would be lost.
The stupid voice weirding weapons were incredibly ridiculous. I've never seen such a stupid weapon. They should have stuck with the weapons they used to begin with -- blades and blasters -- there's nothing wrong with that.
There was no call for it to start raining at the end. -- Nothing environmental had even occurred.
This movie should be done in an animated serial: they'd be able to cover everything in the book properly.
