Antisocial (2013)
Liked it a lot
The film is an Indie-Horror film, so the budget is quite small. That said, they did a great job with a mostly closed set and small cast.
The characters run the typical range, with enough time spent on the main cast mbrs for you to either recognize or relate to.
The bright spot, and I think very intentional, is newcomer Michelle Mylett.
She does a fantastic job with her role. Transitioning very nicely from the initial college student facing an emotional crisis/dilemma to the character we see in the final moments of the film.
Look forward to seeing her in more characters and roles asap!
~~~ Plot Spoiler ~~~
The biggest mistake I think people are making about the film, is reading too much into it. Yes it deals quite heavily with the social media/networking phenomenon. But where many take the film to be a slam on the potential effect of social media, I think rather it's cautionary tale about the potential of how this new (seemingly great at first) technology "can or could" be used, to ill effect by the companies that own and stand to profit from their use.
This takes that potential and rightful concern and thrusts it into the realm of a survival horror tale, to great effect imo
So check it out, it's worth a watch ;)
Outpost (2008)
Shows that talent still trumps budget! Very good, smart horror gem!
The Outpost is a perfect example of how to make a GOOD horror movie on a small budget. Dog Soldiers come to mind but this film I'm sure had an even smaller budget.
Using a smart script, good casting and camera work that provided perfect mood and atmosphere, proves that movie making is still an art and talent IS talent.
While not excessive in the gore or the effects department, the film shines as a perfect example of quality story making and a solid little horror film.
It actually reminds me of a R rated Twilight Zone episode ;) So if you like a good story, Nazi experiments, or zombies...or all the above, look no farther and find the closest rental store, pop some popcorn, turn the lights out and give The Outpost a look! I quite enjoyed it :)
Regards, Roland PS - the lead actor (Ray Stevenson) is the next Frank Castle aka The Punisher in the up coming Punisher: War Zone movie, a much better choice than Thomas Jane IMO
Mr. Brooks (2007)
Welcome Back Mr. Costner! Perfect Thriller!
Wow! What a great movie, was actually better than I had hoped walking in.
The script is original and smart, with a few dark comic moments added at the right moments. I am SO happy that "everyone" signed on to this movie! Like or hate Dane Cook, but he did a perfect job in this roll imo, as did everyone.
Looks like Hurt has settled into the perfect "type" of characters for his personality. (see him in A History of Violence, and Nightmares & Dreamscapes ep "Battleground") Was good to see Demi Moore back on the big screen, I hope this movie helps producers and directors give her more roles as she deserves and has the ability to do so much more imo And finally Mr. Costner was PERFECT for this role! We can hopefully look forward to a Mr. Brooks 2 :) A fun, interesting film that my wife and I give 2 big thumbs up and recommend to anyone looking for a very satisfying original thriller, done a bit differently, that executes perfectly.
Congrats Cast & Crew on a job well done! Roland
Black Mask 2: City of Masks (2002)
Very Fun(Comic) Action Movie!
Yea...Jet Lee wasn't in this one, SO? The way it was filmed and the action sequences was incredible! Reminded me of "City of Lost Children" but as an Action movie heh Not sure why people are giving this a low grade?
All I can guess is that they were "expecting" an exact copy of BM, only more...
Expectations are the drudge of many a film, and NOT the film it's self!
IF you like a fun, action movie with some very creative filming and action shots, then this film is for you! : )
The Cave (2005)
A lot BETTER than what most are telling you...
Not sure where to even begin, there are so many negative reviews and comments that I find completely off base. I liked this movie, granted my wife and I went in with little expectation, we were pleasantly surprised. Those who say the action takes too long to begin are action junkies who care nothing for any attempt for characterization or story. We found the movie was well paced and thought out. Were there dark scenes? Yes , they're in a cave and under water. The story is a solid horror (reminded me a bit of "The Relic" but in a cave :) Btw - this move has nothing to do with Alien, Vampires or Hell...I'm not sure how some critics actually get paid for their reviews? As expected Cole Hauser does a good job, as did the rest of the cast IMO. Those who bashed the so-called lack of char development...what do want? This is not a drama. You get just enough to flush out the story. I thought the creatures were well done(though I have to admit the film would of been better off with the freedom of an R rating) the editing of the PG-13 was a bit tight. But effective. And I have to say...I LOVED the ending! Was unexpected and I do hope more people ignore the critics and get out and see this movie. I look forward to the next movie. (as well as an un-cut Dir. Cut DVD!!! perhaps :)
A side note...I feel that the majority who have seen this film and made comments didn't understand or catch the point of "where" the creatures came from. That knowledge (imo) helps the story make more sense and enjoyable. Especially the ending :)
So if you like suspense, horror, scifi-science, action this is a good solid "B" movie!
Much more entertaining and rewarding than The Brothers Grimm (which I "really" wanted to like) but that's another review : )
