The Sifl & Olly Show (1998)
Crecent Fresh
Yes, this show had me busting a gut everytime I even thought about it. I too have friends that quote this show often...it was just so Crecent Fresh!
I would pay large amounts of money to see this show come to VHS or DVD. I have about six or seven episodes recorded but that is only a fraction of all the really funny stuff I remember and quote.
Yes, they're sock puppets but they have so much character and emotion for socks. The creators did a great job. You've got some serious ass, going to the bathroom problems, Sifl!
MTV really did do a crappy thing by cutting the show. Maybe Sifl & Olly didn't catch on because they were always changing the times and you never knew when they would be on.
"I don't know who you are, but I hear you spit far!"
Okay, to sum up, Sifl & Olly ROCK! MTV is just so un crecent fresh it makes me sick to my stomach.
"Cinders Blue, Cinders Blue, underneath your bed I stew! Eating children ages 6 through 8...I'm bad to the bone!"
There is a sifl & Olly website out there somewhere...maybe someday they will start selling videos...
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001)
A good flick
After reading a couple reviews of Final Fantasy: the Spirits Within I was seriously offended. Every single review threw the first bit of criticism towards how un-real the actors looked. I'm sorry, but how many of us actually go in to see an animated film and are shocked when we can tell it's animated? Do we really have to be told that the animation looks like animation?
Granted - this movie has been featured everywhere for it's life-like, realistic animation but who on earth thinks it's supposed to BE real?
So enough of my raving on this subject...the graphics are great, naturally. The voice acting is well done (I love Steve Buscemi but he was a little akward here). And as an avid Final Fantasy video game player, I enjoyed the similarities in plot between movie and game. So what's wrong with the film?
Three things, really. One, the direction was a little jumpy and small plot details may have ended up on the cutting room floor by accident.
Two, because the plot was similar to the video game style, the movie may have been a little too fast to correctly present the story line.
Three, the animation rarely matches well with the voices. To me this is something that they could have done a much better job with. They put so much into the detail of everything else, this just seems last minute to me.
Overall I would rate this film a 6.5 out of 10. I liked it. I will watch it again. I may someday own it and I was completely entertained while in the theater (which is the main goal of films, if I'm not mistaken).
The Game (1997)
One of my top ten!
So many movies bore me with their predictable plots and over-used finales. I like The Game because of the opposite. After watching this movie, I made all my friends sit down and see it so I could watch the look on their faces everytime something unexpected happened. I was there, too, when they made their friends watch the film.
Yeah, the acting is great; Penn, allbeit a small part, was used perfectly. Douglas was some what typical Douglas-style but well suited for the role.
But it's not the acting that everyone remembers about this movie, as I mentioned bove, plot twists, like never before, are the jewel of this picture. After watching this movie, you'll probably start seeing "CRS" everywhere. If you don't get that, watch the movie!
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Good horror flick...
Sure, this is the original. Everyone knows that originals are the best. While I agree this story is the best of all the elms, the acting is worthy, the plot also worthy, I don't think this movie is easy to watch.
There are a number of inconsistencies that show up in this film that get in the way of a pleasant viewing. Like if Freddy has no power except within the dreams, how does he tell Nancy over the telephone that he's killing her boyfriend? How does the telephone come alive with a human tongue while she's still awake?
With that in mind, the original nightmare is second rate. Where it excels is the original concept, the truly horrific villain, and some cool special effects.
Still, this movie has with is something that stays with everyone forever. That is the reason people enjoy this movie and that is the reason a whole slew of nightmares came out. This movie may have inconsistencies and it may have been outdone in special effects and, of course, consistency, this movie remains the original, and therefore a classic.
The Odyssey (1997)
Homer's Epic on Film is Great Adaptation
This made for TV film is a great adaptation from Homer's epic poem. However, I would not have cared to watch it without first reading the poem (I suggest the Robert Fagles translation). So to someone who is not aware of this great epic's origins, you may have trouble appreciating the TV movie.
With that said, I must say Armand Assante could not have been a better cast for Odysseus. He plays the role with great confidence and expression...something Odysseus was celebrated for.
Isabella Rossellini is another great cast as Athena (the only god to ever best Ares in warfare). If there is anything negative to be said about the way Athena was played, it could only be the fault of the writer/director as she does not fit perfectly in Homer's original mold.
There were many details in the film that were not correct, particularly in the battle at Troy. Still, the changes were intentional (I hope) and made for easier viewing and set up Odysseus as a more modernized version of a hero.
Great film, but I do suggest everyone who views it does so with an open mind as certain themes and values are inaccuracies. Homer's epic poem was not as "candy-coated" as the TV version and a complete reading of the poem would be beneficial to everyone interested.
Happy viewing!
