Eight Crazy Nights (2002)
Apalling
I had no choice but to watch this movie at a friends last night. I have no problem with toilet humor and crude can sometimes be funny. But watching deer defecate (does this count as a spoiler!?) and then happily eat frozen human excrement is not funny. And in a movie about a jewish festival....Old Whitey's voice is intensely and constantly irritating as is his sister's, but I guess that's just personal opinion. There were one or two funny moments, one song near the end was amusing, but this still genuinely ranks as one of the worst movies of all time. The actual animation wasn't bad, which is about the best that can be said for it. A waste of the animators' talent and energy. Truely apalling.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)
Yawn
I went with my kids, one of whom has read all the books at least once. I have read some. Get this straight. The film is not exciting. It plods. Nor is it funny. The locations are great but that is about it. So what if it is faithful to the book? Then why see it? The acting is mediocre at best (Potter not even that), as are the special effects. The kids thought it ok, a similar reaction to Phantom Menace. Films for kids (or maybe all) should be funny or exciting or both. We found it neither. I am sure they got much more out of Jurassic Park III, I certainly did. I'd give it 5. Lets hope Rings is better.
Legends of the Fall (1994)
Why so critical?
I had never heard of the movie till someone at a video store recommended I rent this and Shawshank Redemption, which I had also missed out on. What followed was the best evening's video-watching ever. Few disagree on the merits of Shawshank - a definite 10/10 and surely on anyone's top 5, but why the criticism of this yarn. It is well paced, beautifully filmed (down the road from here, not in Montana), held together by overblown but beautiful music, and a compelling narration. Perhaps you need to experience the stresses of brotherly love being torn apart by the arrival of a female on the scene to appreciate this film's emotional power. Yes it is silly and bizarre at times, but who could not be moved by its climactic ending. Try hard enough and you can rubbish any film, and this is probably easier to rubbish than most. But it has great merits and doesn't deserve all this criticism.
