The Marvels (2023)
My girls were enthralled
We went to watch The Marvels this afternoon in a freezing cinema. People were leaving due to the cold but my wife, three children, girls aged 13, 9 and 7 and I braved the cold to watch the film.
I've seen the vitriol thrown at the film but I have to say, I was never less than entertained and at points laughed out loud. My children and wife loved every minute. What a change from the usual role models they're exposed to.
We've kept up with all the Marvel series and films on Disney + but I can see that it would be confusing for those who haven't. I'd also quite like to watch it again as there were some glaring continuity errors that may have just been that I'd missed a bit.
It's not serious and very lighthearted. But it was everything we needed for a brief (less than 2 hour) film. And my children didn't ask to leave to go to the bathroom once.
Halloween Ends (2022)
What did I just watch?
I loved the first ten minutes or so. It seemed very interesting and I wondered where it was going to go. I'd almost watch the first part as a stand alone short. I should have. It would have saved me watching whatever that was after the opening credits. I'm not really sure what was going on. Was there some sort of message? A commentary on how scapegoats conform to their assumed identity? I've no idea.
Also why did the camera cut away from the kills? It seemed badly edited. The tongue and the blow torch were the only interesting kills but none of it was scary. There was simply no tension.
Tripe. Boring. Confusing. Boring. Dull. Nonsense.
I liked Jamie Lee Curtis though hence the three stars.
Lisey's Story (2021)
Faithful to the book but so slow
I enjoy Stephen King adaptations, mainly so I can see the changes made in order to adapt it for the screen. To my memory of the book, this is faithful but it's so drawn out to watch. You could probably read the book in the 8 hours it takes to watch this and be entertained. This had me checking my phone more than watching the screen. It was boring and the plot could have been a two or three episode mini series and kept me entertained rather than this 8 hour snooze fest.
I had high hopes with King writing the screenplay but someone should have helped him edit it.
Acting was good and production values were high. Keep trying Apple, don't give up on King just be braver when it comes to editing.
The Morning Show: The Interview (2019)
Best hour of TV I've watched in a long time
I can't remember the last time I watched a show that left me so speechless. It was amazing and I'm still trying to process what I saw. The range of emotions that I went through; tears, anger, annoyance, joy, fist pumping euphoria. Amazing.
I enjoyed the show as a whole and thought I knew which way the finale was going but it just sucker punched me. I want to watch it for the first time again.
I'm not sure I've given anything 10 stars before.
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
Oh yes, this is more like it! I have seen the future of Star Wars and it IS good.
Once again working in a cinema pays. I have just watched Star Wars Episode II a whole 3 days before it opens worldwide and I am pleased to inform it is excellent!
Star Wars is back on form after SW:TPM (which I actually liked) from the unexpected event at the beginning to the rather downbeat ending that is reminiscent of Empire Strikes Back.
There are various set pieces that stand out and will make this movie one to re-watch and cherish as much as the original trilogy (finally seeing why Yoda is referred to as the Jedi MASTER is my particular favorite).
Points for seeing it if you have reservations:
1 The little boy actor is actually GOOD unlike in Episode I!
2 Jar Jar Binks only has about 5 minutes of screen time
3 The romance is quite well played and is interspersed with lots of action scenes on Obi-Wan's part.
4 It's a new Star Wars
SPOILER!
5 Yoda has a light saber fight
Go see it and may the Force be with you.
The Hole (2001)
Not as good as the trailer suggests.
Working in a cinema does have its benefits - seeing films as soon as they come out. I had been waiting to see The Hole since the trailer was released last year and I must say I was disappointed. Please do not expect a gore filled fright fest or even a Blair Witch clone. This is more like Big Brother Goes Wrong. The acting is very good however and had I not been expecting something different I would probably have liked it a lot more.
Cherry Falls (1999)
Thank Goodness I didn't pay to see this.
For a couple of weeks my girlfriend and I have been looking forward to seeing this movie, as the trailer on T.V made it look fantastic. I work in a cinema and so get to see movies for free. I'm glad I do because I want to warn people not to pay good money to see this - it was awful.
It was like a bad T.V movie. The acting was wooden, it was not scary and I spotted the killer and motive half way through the film. I'm only guessing that it was half way, because this film dragged. It was like the longest 90 minutes of my life.
The one redeeming factor was the pre credits sequence, which was quite good, but after that go and get your money back and see something better or rent one of the Scream Trilogy on video.
I was also somewhat mystified by the low level of violence in the film. Parts of the film seemed missing, just as people were killed the camera cut to something else. I am intrigued as to whether the American and UK versions of the film are different. If so why didn't the distributors allow the film to be an 18 instead of a 15?
When a Stranger Calls Back (1993)
In my opinion THE scariest movie ever.
I first saw this movie by chance, late at night, whilst flicking through the channels on Sky. I have to say how scared and enthralled I was from the terrifying first thirty minutes to the excellent ending. I would have to rate it as one of the all time scariest movies I have ever seen. I make a point of showing it to friends, who all agree that no other film comes close to the sheer, edge of your seat terror that the first scenes of this movie present.
This film is far better than its predecessor, which I watched some time afterwards, and one does not need any knowledge of that film to enjoy or to be scared witless by this film
If you want to be scared watch this movie.
