Perry Mason: The Case of the Ruthless Reporter (1991)
Waste of time
The script is a dog. The ending was worse. Perry Mason's dialog in the last segment of Woodfield on the stand was downright corny. The prosecutor was hammering Mason earlier for the same type of nonsense he was saying there. The judge, played by Betsy Jones-Moreland, showed the character of a good judge. Until the end when she and the prosecutor went silent as Mason engaged in his two-bit monologue.
The Sam Garza stunts were the best part of the show. Gary Giem did a bang-up job there.
I watched the show to see the outcome, like most of the Perry Mason shows are intended for. But when I got there, I was sorry that I spent my time watching the show.
Rarely do I feel so negative about a TV show, but I think this episode deserves it.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Not as good as I expected
I thought the first Top Gun better than this one. Technically, what was he doing riding a motorcycle everywhere in California without a helmet. Careless and stupid.
Regardless, the story line is nothing new and I didn't think that well written. Actually, an episode (Season 1, Episode 22) from the 12 O'clock High TV series has the same themes and was better done in my opinion.
You might want to watch this movie if you saw the earlier one. Otherwise, stay home and watch the 12 O'clock High TV series.
Midway (2019)
Less than expected
Not accurate on some (many?) intelligence details. No accounting for the sinking of the "Lady Lux." It actually sank after fuel leaks from the already crippled ship filled areas of the carrier with fumes and a generator sparked an explosion. After it was abandoned, the vessel sank from torpedoes intentionally fired by a American destroyer sent her to the bottom. Nimitz wasn't happy. The "sleeping giant" quote has long been considered suspicious and added nothing to the movie. The debate between Hypo and Neget (not recognized by name) deserved more attention. Several other things were problematic, but you get the idea.
More soap opera scenes than I expected from other reviews. They added little, or nothing, to the story.
The only reason I gave it a 5 rating was the new technology for the war scenes was interesting. I wish they wouldn't jump around so much and so fast with the angles, though.
If they had followed the way Tora! Tora! Tora! was done, I could rate it higher. My suggestion is to read Layton's book, And I Was There, instead. More time to do so, but better spent for substance and understanding and more interesting.
Breakheart Pass (1975)
Fun movie.
The music was exhilarating.
The scenery doesn't get any better for the story.
The cast of characters put together was great. I actually liked them all.
The story may be weak measured against real life experience, but what movie story doesn't fail on the same point? It worked OK here because the other aspects of the movie were so interesting.
The train helps make the movie. I loved hearing the train whistle blow. They could have used the bell when arriving and leaving Myrtle, though.
Ben Johnson was particularly at his best as a westerner. Too bad he didn't have a good guy role.
Fun to watch over and over. Get the movie. I did.
