Tatort: Babbeldasch (2017)
Season 1, Episode 1,012
1/10
Is it a drama, a comedy, a whodunnit? It's a big mess and waste of time!
2 March 2017
Here's a brief (spoiler free) summary of the first 15 to 20 minutes of the film - read it and decide for yourself if you'd like to watch this 'Tatort' episode.

Setting: a small theatre in Ludwigshafen staging crime comedy plays in the local dialect.

The detective Ms Lena Odenthal is visiting the premiere of a new play when the main actress dies from an allergic shock after having eaten a filled croissant during a break between the acts of the play.

Was this an accident or was it murder? Does this sound like a classical Agatha Christie crime plot of the 60s to you?

Well, the director of this 'Tatort' episode has decided that you might not be intelligent enough to understand a crime story without guidance. Therefore the dead actresses ghost needs to constantly appear in dreams to the detective and tell her that this was a 'murder by croissant' and that the detective should look for clues - threatening to return in dreams as long as the case remaining unsolved.

Ms Odenthal, our detective, is not really completely convinced but nevertheless visits the funeral ceremony and makes acquaintances with the family and colleagues of the ceased actress. At this point we're getting into full throttle script genius mode: We are introduced to the lesbian daughter of the actress who left the theatre 3 years ago and is not on good terms with the rest of the theatre cast, we learn that the dead actress had two lovers simultaneously, the theatre director and - what a twist! - the owner of the bakery next door which delivered the deadly croissant. And we meet the theatre building's owner who would like to knock down the building and build a home for migrants instead (to profit from state supplies for migrants) - the theatre's rental agreement was in the name of the deceased actress. Also there is misfortune and mistrust amongst the remaining theatre personnel.

Unfortunately for us, Ms Odenthal is not clever enough to figure out any clues within this messy setup so the ghost of the dead actress has to return in another dream and give her a few more hints. Ms Odenthal follows the ghost's inspirations and visits the lesbian daughter, interrupting a heated discussion between her and her lesbian girlfriend who (as we learn) is still living in marriage with a man and doesn't want to admit to her lesbian (or bisexual?) lifestyle in public. The girlfriend leaves enraged, but the lesbian daughter keeps it cool and out of the blue suggests to the detective to play a part in the theatre play although Ms Odenthal does admit having no experience at all. Who cares - in the the next scene we see the lesbian daughter in the empty theatre teaching Ms Odenthal how to play her role in the play...

At this point I stopped watching - I was just not longer interested to find out if there had been a murder in the beginning or not, nor who could be romantically involved with somebody or holding a grudge, nor wanted to see another ghost appearance in another dream, nor find out what in another sub plot the detective's partner had wanted to announce during a weekend get-together (he left early)... and also I was so fed up with the unnerving musical score.

I'll award one point for the funny dialect which is spoken throughout the episode and zero points for the script (and the director).

Disappointing - 'Oldboy' or 'A Bittersweet Life' it ain't....
4 June 2010
The movie description on the back of my DVD cover (German release) compares this movie with 'A Bittersweet Life' and 'Oldboy'. Usually I wouldn't trust these cheap advertising lines of the distribution companies anyway but I was still lured by the "revenge with a twist" theme of the movie plot description.

The first half of the movie isn't too bad at all, we get to know the killer trying to find his long lost brother. He finally finds out where he is and that he is a cop but at their first meeting the cop gets shot dead right before his eyes. As you'd expect the killer wants to find out who killed his brother and to take revenge. He takes the identity of his brother, disguises as a cop and starts the action. A series of flashbacks into their youth adds on to how they had been separated and introduces a few more characters. So far, so good... nice little twist in the script, killer turns cop, movie not bad so far. Unfortunately after that the movie gets worse and worse... plot holes, an almost never-ending overdone showdown ... I won't develop that much more, just read the previous 3 user comments who already pointed out most of the weak parts.

As for a simple revenge action film the average viewer will normally accept a few plot holes but there are just too many and also the behaviour of the characters are just too absurd to take it seriously. To make it worse: choreography of the action scenes in the final showdown is too slow and almost makes you look for the 'fast fwd' button on your remote control.

What does this movie then have in common with 'A Bittersweet Life' or 'Oldboy'? Except for the revenge theme and a stylish photography not much unfortunately.

On the whole this movie is rather a waste of time. Don't hesitate to see 'A Bittersweet Life' however if you have missed it so far. Another nice one from South Korea is 'Mr. Socrates'. And I must admit that I had enjoyed Travolta's 'The Punisher' or 'Death Sentence' with Kevin Bacon more than this one...

Average Asian action
14 February 2006
This is one of the average 'policeguy tries to help in solving crime puzzle but is hindered by other police force' action flicks. It tries to look stylish and Hollywood-alike but on the whole it neither manages to reach Hollywood standards nor can live up to other well achieved Asian action movies. In no way this movie can compare to the excellent 'Shiri', any of the Takeshi Kitano films or the great Hongkong action movies. The movie characters appear rather flat in this movie and the flow of the movie is not really in the right pace. The excellent TV-series '24' with Kiefer Sutherland is a perfect example how to pace and direct a movie with that 'lonesome cop fights against all' theme. As for the comedy aspects in that film: stick to 'Beverly Hills Cop 1', 'Bad Boys', 'Lethal Weapon series' and similar films and you will have more fun. And as for Asian action movies: there are plenty of very good action flicks. Overall I rate this movie 5/10, it's not really that bad at all, but don't expect another 'Shiri' or 'Brother', 'Hana-Bi' or even 'Fulltime Killer'.

Louis de Funes goes musical
23 September 2004
For lovers of this great french comedian this movie is best watched with the remote control in one hand. The story is the typical mix of little choleric Louis (playing the director of an all girl dancing group) who tries to shield them from other men so that the girls won't be distracted from their job. There are a couple of well directed scenes that provide good laughs and Louis delivers the whole range of his facial expressions that alone makes you giggle. However this time the script seems to have lacked enough ideas for a full movie, therefore you will have to sit through plenty of dancing and music and even an almost unbearable singing scene where Louis de Funes sings musical-like. Approx. half of the movie time is being consumed by music, dance and singing only - too much for a comedy.

Therefore my advice: skip those dull scenes with the fast forward of your remote control and have a good laugh at Louis while he is really acting (and not dancing or singing).

Jabberwocky (1977)
A disappointment for Python lovers...
24 November 2003
This is one of the 2 movies of Monty Python members (the other one being 'Personal Services') that disappointed me. There are a few traces of the brilliant 'pythonian' wicked British trash humour left - but on the whole Jabberwocky does not work. On one side there isn't really much of the weirdness of the other Python flicks in this film that would make it a good comedy; on the other side however there isn't really a story that would make sense if you were to take the movie any serious (which certainly wasn't the intention of the director).

To me it seems that Terry Gilliam wanted to make a few more bucks out of the highly successful middle age/knight & castle comedy theme line that was so brilliantly displayed in 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail' but the ran short of ideas.

I'd rather watch the other Python movies or the TV series once again or have a good laugh watching the brilliant black British comedy series 'League of Gentlemen' than ever wasting my time with 'Jabberwocky' again.

I rated 4/10 - because there are still a few laughs in it and I generally love British comedies - if you are not into that kind of black humour: avoid!

Surrealistic sci-fi animation
20 November 2003
The CGI-animation in this Japanese anime works well with the dark futuristic atmosphere. The storyline and the (animated) settings are in a surrealistic style - pictures of the Spanish artist Salvatore Dali sprung to my mind. Although there are some shortcomings in the story I would highly recommend seeing this anime because I haven't seen anything similar in animated pictures so far. The soundtrack is also very appealing and works perfectly with the pictures.

A movie that doesn't age
19 November 2003
Unbelievable - this ultraviolent gangster flick is from 1972 - if it wasn't for the poor monophonic sound mix on the dvd, you almost wouldn't recognize the age! Fast cuts, ultracool gangster hero, bloody beat-ups and shootings - everything that Beat Takeshi Kitano is exploring and developing to a further stage in his brilliant movies 'Hana-Bi' or 'Brother' can be found in this masterpiece as a blueprint.

Fans of Asian action cinema won't be disappointed - the film is moving so fast, the inevitable climax almost let's you lose breath - this is a true gem! Get it, see it!

Alcoholism in China
16 June 2003
This movie is almost like a documentary. The camera seems to follow the protagonists and the whole movie appears realistic and believable to the viewer. For me it was quite interesting to see how day to day life of people in China looks like, it gives you insights into their apartments, what they do, etc. But on the other hand I must admit that I didn't find the story too compelling. A family that slowly breaks apart due to the father's drinking problems... there's nothing too special about that and the movie doesn't produce any extra moral or emotional impact or anything that would set this movie apart from other works. Therefore I would only recommend this movie to viewers that are interested in Chinese culture as a documentary- if you are up to see a rewarding drama check elsewhere.

Boring construction site
10 June 2003
As the title suggests: 'Life is a construction site', this whole movie seems to be a construction site - one that won't be finished. The movie spectator has to watch dull characters wander through a boring script, but very rarely he is likely to sense a spark of sympathy or an emotional reaction. The character of the greek girl alone is played with carefulness and emotion but apart from that, most of the movie is a waste of time.

If you like to watch movies about the topic of people desperately looking for love in a cold world I'd strongly suggest Pedro Almodovars 'All about my mother' or 'Magnolia' instead! I'd also suggest an alternative German movie: Watch 'Train Birds' a.k.a. 'Zugvögel... einmal nach Inari' by Peter Lichtefeld - a brilliant masterpiece.

Thrilling documentary about a disputable politician
26 November 2002
This movie documentary describes the lifestory of Herbert Wehner, who became one of the most influential polititians of the social democratic party in Western Germany after WW 2.

The movie depicts his political interest and career starting as an anarchist after WW 1, then joining the communist party, going underground during the nazi dictatorship and then shortly after that emigrating to stalinist Russia.

There, in the infamous Hotel Lux, he faces new pressures from the daily denouncing that goes on between the numerous 'guests' of that hotel.

The development of Wehner's character, his ambitious strive to save his skin and build his career and thereby sacrificing his former ideals is well described in this movie.

One long conversation, that's all...?!
8 January 2002
Basically that film is just about one long dialogue between the killer and his psychiatrist in a german prison (or psychiatric clinic?) in the 1920s or 1930s that spans over some days before the killer's death penalty. The other actors barely speak a word in this movie. That sounds rather dull but the compelling performance of the two main actors made me sit through the whole film. On the other hand, if you don't like dialogue movies the avoid. There's no action at all, only language and expressions... I'd give it a 7 out of 10..

Philosophic approach to a movie...
8 January 2002
I was specifically interested in that movie because I live in Germany and the reunification of the two parts of Germany in 1990 certainly was one of the most important political events in Europe since the second world war. Godard's movie neither is a movie in the traditional sense nor a documentary. It's rather a philosophical approach to that event - Godard shows short fragments of fictional and non-fictional episodes, opinions and facts served with an interesting musical (classical) music score. The movie itself is split into many titled chapters that reminded me of the last episodes of the fantastic japanese anime 'neon genesis evangelion'. But on the whole it's rather tiring to sit through the whole film because I could't follow all of the director's original intentions. Perhaps that film would be a perfect object for university students...

Save your time and money and go see another anime!
3 December 2001
This is a rather silly japanese animation feature about 3 girls who travel with their mother in a carriage to lure men into sexual adventures. They turn into wild animals and kill their lovers after having sex with them. The setting is a middle age king and castle scenario. A lame mystery plot cannot help this boring anime feature, neither the erotic nor the mystery aspect of that film is satisfying and the characters are flat and annoying.

All in all: This movie is a pure waste of time (and money, if you'd be up to rent or buy it)

waste of time
27 November 2001
This movie sucks! One of the worst storylines I've ever seen, flat characters, cheap special effects, stupid dialogues,... and not even funny! That movie is below B-movie standards - 1950's monster movies look like works of art compared to that crap. Absolutely a waste of time.

Good looking Angela Jolie battles against a weak script
27 November 2001
The female Indiana Jones certainly has the better looks, but the movie itself is way below the Indy-trilogy. May be worth a rent for a lazy afternoon but certainly not good enough for multiple viewings. The script is a mixture of action and fantasy - and somehow it seems that the director couldn't really decide which way he should go. The result is not really satisfying...

Boring
27 November 2001
Beautiful Sandra Bullock wastes her talent in this boring flick about uninteresting problems of stupid characters. If you are into soap opera relationship movies, you may find this movie entertaining perhaps. However that movie couldn't really get me interested in watching these dull movie characters fussing around with their little problems and neurotic behaviour.
