Patriot (2015)
A very worthy choice
Do you like the Coen brothers? Do you like Wes Anderson? Maybe a little Quentin Tarantino. This series is dark and edgy and quirky. A great soundtrack. Great acting. The richness of the characters right from the very start is beyond comparison. Great dialogue. Great women. Double great, actually. Aliette Opheim is my new favorite actress. Terry O'Quinn might just be my new favorite actor. It's a shame there's only two seasons. But maybe not. It tells a great story. Maybe it stopped there because it ran its course. To keep it going would be to try too hard.
Short and sweet. Enjoy it. They don't make many like this.
No Hard Feelings (2023)
Not your girl next door
Literally. Girl Next Door is a far superior movie. There's no point for this movie to exist in a world where GND and American Pie and countless others do this story so much better. I didn't turn it off. It was cute at times. But ultimately really bad. It's like the producers were greenlit and then told you have one day to make this movie. There were so many scenes that had potential but just withered and died. Was there nobody affiliated with the production to help out? JLaw has been in some phenomenal movies, and she is a phenomenal actor, and she was ok with these scenes? It doesn't make sense. The movie had potential but they totally squandered it. Better than any movie I've ever made, though.
You Were Never Really Here (2017)
Terrible film
Do you like movies with very little dialogue? Then this one's for you. But don't worry. It makes up for the lack of dialogue with hardly any action. And Joaquin Phoenix has never mumbled better! Depressing story. Depressing characters. Excessive flashbacks. We get it. The guy had a tough childhood. But what's interesting about him or the story? Nothing. It keeps beating the viewer over the head with the same themes. There's no part of this movie I'd watch again. The only thing it has going for it is the run time. This kind of self-indulgent crap usually goes on for much longer. I'm still not getting that 90 minutes of my life back but it could've been worse.
The Wrestler (2008)
Don't believe the hype
I finally broke down and saw this movie. It was exactly as I expected. Trite story of faded glory, regret, and attempted redemption. Not a bad story, not a great one. Decent performances from everybody, none great. But throughout I couldn't answer the basic question of "why am I still watching?" I'm shocked I didn't turn it off. That's more an indictment of my Saturday night than an affirmation of this movie. Not for nothing, and not to be raunchy, but we get to see quite a bit of Ms. Mona Lisa Vito. I guess that counts for something. And now I'll write some more because I haven't got the requisite verbosity to satisfy the IMDb folks. I've said all I can about this movie. One positive note, it doesn't over do the wrestling. It shows just enough to set the story up, and perhaps a little nostalgia for those of us who remember it, though I was never fan past the age of fourteen. How any adult could be a fan is shocking. Actually, it isn't. It just should be. Had there been one more wrestling scene I'd have turned it off for sure.
