The Decks Ran Red (1958)
Very painful to watch
I have seen very few movies that are this bad with big name stars in it, it was so bad that it almost seemed like a SNL skit or something, nothing redeeming about this movie, if you watch the whole thing like I did you are going to feel like you were robbed of your time......
The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)
Masterpiece!
If you are looking for a movie that will take you on an intellectually driven emotional ride, then this is where you jump on the blue bus. Be ready because this is one of the freakiest journeys you'll take in film history. I'm not going to blow smoke up your butt, if you need your movies at spoon fed caliber this is not the film for you. You'll need to ratchet up the I.Q. points to take in what this movie is dishing out.
It's as if Yorgos Lanthimos has channeled both Stanley Kubrick and Alfred Hitchcock. I felt the presence of 'Psycho' 'Vertigo' and 'The Shining' and especially 'Eyes Wide Shut'. This really is a genius movie, I feel that many film students will be studying 'The Killing of a Sacred Deer' in film classes for decades to follow.
Hell or High Water (2016)
Captured the real Texas to the T
I am writing this review two days after visiting Texas. Let me tell you right now, this movie has not only captured the look and feel of Texas, but the people of Texas. Every character in this movie,{including the T-Bone Café waitress} I feel like I met while visiting there. This movie captured the heart and soul of Texas. Hell or High Water is extremely dynamic in the character study of each and every person in this film. My favorite is Ben Foster's character 'Tanner Howard', everyone else in this film is the resin, this guy is the catalyst that truly makes this one solid movie. At first glance Tanner seems shallow and foolish, as the movie progresses you see that he is the only one that truly grasps the reality and the consequences of their actions, but he does it anyway because of his loyalty and love for his brother. I love the seen in the Casino where Tanner and the large Comanche Indian go nose to nose, it is the second reference to the white man becoming like the American Indian and being stripped of land and dignity. It's as if Tanner has become a Comanche warrior on his last stand before becoming extinct in the world of the evil rich. This is a movie that really should be watched more than once so you can catch every line that is incredibly scripted. Well, I gave this movie a 10 because I loved it, every aspect of it, even the music.
Mojave (2015)
An incredible movie!
This is not a mindless action movie, this is an extremely well written and well acted film. I am a Jim Morrison fan, and have watched Morrison's short film 'Highway' about 20 times. 'Mojave' is obviously patterned after it and they have done an incredible job capturing the magic of a discontented rich celebrity who goes to the Mojave desert to find clarity. I like the fact that the lead never breaks and never becomes a victim, instead he becomes more deadly than the psycho genius haunting his world.
Twelve O'Clock High (1949)
The Best
This movie is just plain out incredible. One of my favorite movies ever is Patton, and after watching 12 o'clock high, I can see how Patton got it's template. I'm sure many other movies copied the magic of 12 O'clock High. So many movies loose their focus by thinking they need a love interest planted into it. This movie didn't lower the bar and force that in. I spent 16 years of my life in three different services and all being aviation. For 6 years I was part of an aircrew, this movie kept it real all the way, I wish anything that modern movies would keep things as real as this movie did, a movie that was filmed over 50 years ago. Dean Jagger's character "Maj. Harvey Stovall" was just as important as Gregory Peck's "Gen. Frank Savage" part. Jagger was absolutely awesome as the action starved paper pusher that picks up exactly what Gen. Savage is putting down, helping him stall the pilot's transfers. After every movie I watch, I always think to myself, "If I was the Director, what would I of done different?" This is one of those very few movies that just came out perfect. It has the perfect actors, perfect storyline, perfect editing, and perfect ending, what else can I say,,,, this is just a perfect movie.
Maleficent (2014)
captivating movie
Almost all of these "High Budget" movies put me to sleep with their lousy acting, lousy scripts, lousy story lines, and the same old 40 minute ridiculous fight at the end. But give Angelina Jolie 200 million dollars and she'll give you one of the greatest films ever made. I'm not kidding, this is like a perfect motion picture with every aspect of it done right. Not only is it a visual master piece, but the story line and acting are of extremely high caliber. You can tell that Angelina put her heart and soul into making this film. I believe her acting alone she should win an academy award, and while they are handing them out the computer graphic design people should win for their hard work. So if you can, try to see Maleficent in 3D, it will blow you away.
A Life Less Ordinary (1997)
Cameron Diaz is Awesome!
I really loved this movie, it was well written, well directed, and well acted, and the icing on the cake is Cameron Diaz, she is quite the package, smoking hot with a great personality and is just awesome in this movie. Ewan McGregor is no slouch either, his high energy keeps the film moving at a nice steady pace. What really ties it together is a perfect sound track. The entire film is planted with mood enhancing songs that roll flawless with each scene. What I loved is how the director kept the film light, no overly heavy scenes, keeping it fun throughout the entire picture. Holly Hunter and Delroy Lindo's characters were hilarious and I found myself constantly rooting for them. I would put this film in my top 20 favorite movies and I highly suggest watching it.
Sands of the Kalahari (1965)
41 years later
I finally found a copy of this movie on DVD, www.onlyclassicmovies.com just $20 and you are in business.Hope this helps out if you are looking for this impossible to find movie. The picture looks like it was recorded from a VHS but who cares, the quality is totally watchable and the sound is perfect. It has been 41 years since I saw this flick and it's even better than I remember. This is one of five movies that I saw as a kid that really changed my life. The other four are Planet of the Apes, Vanishing Point, Easy Rider, and Kellys Heroes. None of these movies are high budget or winning academy awards for acting, but like Sands of the Kalahari, these films had a magic, it's like the planets aligned perfect in all aspects of the entire movie, it just becomes unparalleled and helps form your life. I spent 6yrs in the army, rode a Harley across the United States, went on safari in South Africa, owned a 70 Dodge Challenger, and was bitten by my dads monkey, swear to God.
3000 Miles to Graceland (2001)
Fun times had by all
A movie goer should know the difference between DRAMA and TONGUE & CHEEK. You would think so anyway, movies have been out a long time. But over and over I read reviews where the viewer and even the professional critic can not tell the difference. They can't seem to tell when a director is making fun of the film itself, a not to be taken serious type movie, or when he is really trying to make a serious drama, maybe even to the point of hoping for an Oscar nomination. Well anyway, if you are clever enough to figure out that 3000 Miles to Graceland is a tongue and cheek, and trust me, Keven Costner and Kurt Russell have been around the acting scene long enough to know what they are producing, then I highly recommend this film. If you can laugh at a midget Elvis getting blown away in a hale of gun fire, this may be your flick. If you can handle a bratty kid flipping off Kurt Russell while Kurt is trying to gave sex with the Kid's mother, this could be your type of movie. If you don't mind a scene where Keven Costner is driving on a desert road with a girl giving him oral pleasure, this motion picture might have your name on it. Life is way to short to get your panties in a wad when every movie you go to see isn't Steel Magnolias, or Schendler's List. Think of me as a friend, I'm here to help. Thank-You for your time and I hope we got this tongue and cheek thing figured out.
Rollerball (1975)
The American Cowboy
The legendary Cowboy seems to emerge as an easily identifiable Hero for the movie fan. From the classic Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid to the more contemporary Easy Rider(Peter Fonda, the spur wearing biker, riding an iron horse with sidekick "Billy the Kid") to the futuristic type in Rollerball. James Caan, plays a sports hero, a Cowboy from Texas with a sidekick named MoonPie. Two teammates that are the best there is at the game of Rollerball. Strong characters that seem to fear nothing, facing certain death with each game, they blow it off as a fun time. Possessing a true love of the game, Johnathan E.(Caan) is not only a likable Good Ol Boy but is seriously loved and admired by his devoted fans. Which, unbeknownst to him the big boys are feeling a little uncomfortable with his popularity, causing a power play against him. This movie is like a good book, from page one you will be hooked, it is a great story with great acting, it will pull you in and take you for a ride. Stick with it, this is a film that intensifies as it progresses. It is not cluttered with long drawn out dialog. It is well directed with perfect casting. Take note of the fantastic cinematography of the last game, starting with Johnathan E. walking down the hallway to the arena. Notice the glowing red walls, the image of a man alone, walking straight into Hell. Then notice after the explosion of the cycle, the reflection of fire wrapped around the face of Corporate Head (John Houseman), synbolizing the Devil himself. A person can purchase this movie on VHS for about $6, I suggest you do just that, watch it a couple times then put it on the shelf until those rowdy buddies of yours come by, perfect flick for open comments while your pounding down beers.
Patton (1970)
The best in war movies
I saw this movie in the theater when it first came out in 1970, I was 11 yrs old then. It had a great impact on me then, since then I have bought it on VHS and just watched it again. I am 41 now and I still think that this is the best war movie ever made. George C. Scott is just brilliant in this film. The music sound track is so state of the art, movie makers of modern day should take serious notes. This is really how you make a film that will stand the test of time. If for some reason you have not seen this movie I highly recommend it, it is not only entertaining but a great lesson in history.
