The Other (1972)
Classic horror effectively delivered.
I could not agree more about the impact of this film, but wish to add that it could be of benefit to view this on an afternoon. Some many hours before one's night-time bedtime hour. My mistake the first time viewing these many years ago was not allowing the extra time and I suffered from nightmares.
Something's Got to Give (1962)
Last glimpse...
One final farewell, one last glimpse of a star. Many will argue this was an imminently forgettable picture. They may well be right, but when you view it for a second or third time, the scattershot blast of history parts the veil and you have a small peak at what would have been, if not greatness, then the beginning of her "acting" career. A treasure to view more than once.
The Daydreamer (1966)
Profound and entrancing...
The charismatic storyteller from Denmark was never quite like this, but it is none-the-less a profound and entrancing time capsule of fantasy spun with gossamer whole-cloth from the 1960's era. What it doesn't convey with staging and costume and storyline it equally expresses with what it leaves out from the whole of historical relation. The balance weighs it as entertaining, but it is also quite educational. Simply put, keep this one in your collection and pull it out when you feel like retreating into the younger years of a bygone age.
Puppet Master III: Toulon's Revenge (1991)
Great premise, stagey, but terrific horror parody.
Great premise, stagey, but terrific horror parody. Some of the inspiration for directing shows but it is the acting which carries the body of this movie. A couple of actors do try to carry it to the morgue (Say- wasn't that David Lynch?) and the rest do a very credible performance. No this isn't high art, get real! This is a horror flick - the DRIVE-IN genre!! Cudos to Aaron Eisenberg for a great command performance as Patrick. His work crafting the character really shows. (More so when you recall he went on to DS9 as "Nog" among other notables.) Try not to be jaded by the glitzy, schmanzy flicks that through Terminator your way, or Independence Day. There is not a lot of craft in throwing mega-bux into production. Nor is there a lot of heart. So, relax, have some popcorn, just enjoy the movie.
Chillers (1987)
Reminiscent of the 60's B horror flicks.
Horror is the genre, but not exactly the effect this movie evokes. Not an "even" film (pacing, transitions) and very reminiscent of the 60's B horror flicks, but it has some stellar moments. Those moments captured something that made me recall the grand horror movies that, as children, our neighborhood gang would plot all week long to watch on the TV's Friday night horror show. For nostalgia and some craft, I give it a score higher than many others.
