Scorpion: A Lie in the Sand (2018)
Season 4, Episode 22
2/10
If you're on this page it's probably too late, but if you're a fan don't watch this episode.

The show's cancellation was a surprise, so while this is the last episode it was not intended as one. Consequently, it created loose ends rather than tying them up, and these loose ends are depressing. I just saw it, and right now I feel like it ruined the show for me. Stay away if you can.

A big disappointment
20 August 2006
I really liked the Whole Nine Yards. Perhaps a little overdone, but very enjoyable. And Natasha Henstridge was gorgeous! The Whole Ten Yards was a disappointment. The plot was a retread, and the chemistry between Jimmy and Oz was watered down from the first movie. And as others have pointed out, Bruce Willis' crying was both poorly done and poorly conceived. Also, Jimmy's rotten behavior towards Oz and his wife was so out of character from what was established in the first movie, and his bizarre behavior in the beginning was inadequately justified. Furthermore, Kevin Pollack was more incomprehensible in this movie than in the previous one, which is saying something. I actually regretted seeing this movie, because it to some extent spoiled the nice feeling I got from watching the first one.

Flawed, but well worth it
27 February 2005
There were several points in this movie that could have been better --mostly dialog. Cynthia's and Janni's dialog in their opening scene, for example. And Amanda Peete is not the most accomplished actress. However, Amanda had some excellent moments, and I loved her enthusiasm. Michael Clarke Duncan was terrific. And this was one of Bruce Willis's better movies. Many have complained about Rosanna Arquette -- her performance was a bit over-the-top, but in the main I enjoyed it, especially in the police station. And Matthew Perry was very good too. And the running jokes about his marriage and his beeper were funny. I wasn't happy with the plot twist that made it imperative for Jimmy to kill Cynthia rather than divorce her -- quite illogical. However, what gave this movie an 8 is Natasha Henstridge -- flat-out one of the most gorgeous women on film. I've seen her in other projects and have been impressed, but in this movie I felt like Oz -- dumbstruck.

It's funny, but...
27 February 2005
Other reviewers have noted that Goldie Hawn did a terrific job in this movie. And they are right. And Kurt Russell does a fine job as well, as does most of the supporting cast (including Roddy McDowell and Katherine Helmond, two personal favorites). However, I cannot get past the plot -- Dean's horrible deception. To take a woman and pretend that she is your wife and mother to your children, knowing that at some point she was going to regain her memory, is frankly disgusting. This movie is sort of like eating stolen ice cream -- partly pleasurable but mostly shameful. And while most of the movie deserves a higher vote, the plot line makes that impossible.

Not the worst in the world...
26 February 2005
Yes, this is not a classic. And Jason Patric was not up to the task of headlining a major movie -- or, perhaps, any movie. His next big role was in The Alamo -- nothing more needs saying. Nonetheless, the first half of the story was pretty good. And the music was quite good too. Willem Dafoe as the villain was terrific, although hopefully there were some special effects involved with the leeches. But the key to this movie is Sandra Bullock. As far as I'm concerned, a movie of her reading the phone book would be at least a 4. With her, it was watchable, and parts of it were quite entertaining. However, if you are not a big fan of her's, then you might want to find a different way to invest 2 hours.

Unwatchable
21 April 2003
To some extent I eagerly anticipated this movie. I'm a big Mel Gibson fan, and I enjoyed the Maverick show on television. And James Garner is in this too! But I couldn't finish it. Mel Gibson was sadly miscast -- too much "man" for this version of Maverick. And Jodie Foster is not enough of a "lady" to do her part justice. The most disappointing movie I can recall.

A nice little movie
21 April 2003
Frankly, I am not a whole-hearted Steve Martin fan -- a little too much silliness and goofiness for my taste. And there is some of that in this movie, too. However, there are so many good parts that I can overlook the "groan" parts. I am also a big fan of Cyrano, and this movie was quite true to the spirit of the story. There were some false notes in the supporting cast, but Shelley Duvall and Michael J. Pollard were terrific -- Shelley in particular. (By the way, I thought she was terrific in Popeye also.) The music was quite nice too. A good rainy day movie.

Interesting, but flawed
9 March 2003
For the most part, I thought this was done quite well. The premise was quite original, and some of the writing was terrific. However, there were frankly too many obscenities for my taste, much of it seemingly gratuitous. And I could could not stand Linda Fiorentino. I had only seen her before in MIB, where in a small part she did a fine job -- in this, she stunk. Not bad enough, however, to justify not seeing this movie.

Liked the film, loved Annette Bening
9 February 2003
This was a pretty good movie. I enjoyed Michael Douglas' portrayal of the president, as well as the performance of Michael J. Fox. It was interesting to contrast Martin Sheen's portrayal of the presidential aide versus his portrayal of the president in another Aaron Sorkin production -- The West Wing. And Richard Dreyfus was terrific as Douglas's opponent, Senator Rumson. But it was Annette Bening's performance that made this movie more than pedestrian. She lit up the screen whenever she was on it. When Warren Beatty married her, some asked what the prototypical ladies' man saw in this relative unknown. After watching her in this movie, all MY questions were answered. Based on this film, he is a lucky man.
