Hard as Nails (2007)
Love in Action
Wow!! Wow!! and More Wow!! I was a drug addict and product of the hedonistic 60's. I only wish that there was a Justin coming to my High School then perhaps my journey to Hell and back may have been avoided. Praise God for Justin and his 'Hard As Nails Ministry'. This doc totally blew me away. Justin's compassion and love for his Lord and others is evident in every action of his life.If his critics took a similar stance with their lives in this fallen world then perhaps there would be no need for ministries like Justin's anymore. Sure he came from an affluent family but this to me only substantiates the authenticity of his commitment and ministry to save the street kids. He could have chosen the rich easy path but like his Jesus chose the hard path. How could this be milking it for gain? If only a few more people did similar things with their lives how much better off would our world be then?
The Life and Death of Peter Sellers (2004)
One Brilliant Actor Deserves Another
Geoffrey Rush 'Shines' once again! Through a plethora of characters interwoven through the narcissistic life of Peter Sellers, Rush is able to bring us into the warped and fractured world of Peter Sellers.
How many young, like me, sat in laughing awe watching 'The Pink Panther' in the 60's and not knowing or caring who this marvelous comedian was but just relishing the natural talent of the man to make the world laugh? That's what he did best! Make the world laugh! Such a Shakespearean tragedy revealed, to find his life quite the contrary. What a field day Shakespeare would have had writing the script for Seller's life? From a child fan of Seller's movies to an adult who just had his bubble burst, I congratulate all involved in creating this movie at bringing to me the reality of the 'Real Peter Seller's', whoever he was.
The Secret (2006)
Self Help or Self Destruct?
A New Age Film that portrays Old Age phenomena in a glitzy teasing package. There is nothing really new about the concept of this film other than it's packaging, which is extremely enticing and convincing to the unwary,to say the least. One can be easily conned by the hype and hard sell of the advocates of this philosophy.

A Self Help film? Adopt the philosophy of the 'Law of Attraction' at your own peril. Become 'worldly successful' and wallow in your self-created greedy and egocentric world. I thought man was meant to outgrow egocentricity in childhood? Does the world really need more 'it's all about me' people?
Songcatcher (2000)
An intimate journey through an amazing culture accompanied by their wonderful music.
Songcatcher is a must for anyone who loves music. Classical buffs will no doubt be amused by the 'bluegrass' style of music interwoven through this kaleidascope of hill billy melodies and folk songs. Through this movie my eyes were opened to another world and culture. What an amazing people with an amazing style of music. I was captivated by the scenery of Ashville Carolina, moved through the honest and warmth of the hill billy culture and aurally transfixed by a very unusual style of music that this movie introduced to me. Look beyond the plot and acting, delve into the scenery, hill billy images and the music, and discover for yourself a very memorable movie.
The Scorpion King (2002)
Entertaining and a Good Laugh
Took the teenager, whose eyes 'danced with delight' at the babes and the action. It was good for a laugh at times too. I liked the movie as it didn't appear to take itself too seriously- I mean are we that stupid to believe Polynesians were found in the Middle East, 'before the Pyramids?' Come on folks this is light romp in the forest with a bit of wrestling, muscle and might and good bods to boot. I paid good money but didn't feel ripped off like I did seeing Panic Room. At least I came away entertained. I gave it a six.
Panic Room (2002)
Panic Room? Titanic Room!
I agree totally with the viewer who stated that this is like an upgraded 'Home Alone' movie. It has all the makings of the like, except for a 'crazy kid' being trapped there are a 'crazy mum and daughter'. The camera effects were interesting to start with but became an excuse for supplementing a boring and predictable script. If not for the expertise of one of my favorite directors, David Fincher, this movie would have been a real fizzer. Nothing like the 'Fight Club' caliber. This movie was so full of holes it looked like Swiss Cheese. I gave it a four. Don't waste your money - wait till the video.
Agnes Browne (1999)
A Wee Green One- Full O' Surprises
What a refreshing and delightful movie, depicting the conquering of the human spirit in the face of adversity in a humorous, yet profound way. This is probably one for the more 'mature' in life, thus the low ranking. The acting is superb, the casting brilliant, the directing great.. it's a top movie in my books! Anyone who has ever tried, or is trying, 'single parenting', will really relate to this one in a special way. I had heaps of laughs and lot of tears too. Not bad for a male who also likes movies like the 'Fight Club'.
Affliction (1997)
Slow and Predictable
After reading other viewers comments and noting the ranking, I was inspired to rent this one. I was terribly disappointed. I believed it to be very slow paced and predictable. Sure it had a message - particularly to those parents initiating or perpetrating violent abuse on their children, as well as the victims of such abuse, but somehow the story didn't meld together for me. It just didn't seem to have the oommphh that this kind of movie needed. Perhaps better , scripting, directing, filming and production would have enhanced a pretty credible performance by the actors and a fine casting. A two for me.
Legally Blonde (2001)
TEENAGE MISS- NOT BLISS?
This movie is highly recommended to parents who have survived the 'teenage years' with their children.
I saw this movie in a cinema with predominantly teenagers present. Being a middle aged man and a parent of two, and having experienced the wild fantasizing and idealism that teenagers tend to possess, I found this movie to be extremely funny, much to the chagrin of the teenage audience who failed to see what I was so raucously laughing about. Perhaps my laughter was hitting upon sensitive chords within themselves, and that they were being drawn to recognize too, the subtle send-up of themselves in this great little movie.
Look for the subtlety that tends to go over the heads of those who have not experienced teenage parenting yet. If you're in this category, as a viewer, I think you'll agree it's a real send up of the young, that many, judging by the comments read so far, have failed to observe.
Maybe Baby (2000)
Refreshing Comedy
It took a while to get into this movie but once the plot starts to thicken you'll find yourself enjoying the humor of it all. Surprise appearance of many of England's great comedians make it all the more interesting. This is a great movie with exceptionally funny bits. Look on it all as a pleasant romp through making a family. It covers some pretty serious issues in a jovial and good humored way. I found it thoroughly entertaining and had lots of gut wrenching laughing moments. All actors were appropriately cast, and did a great job of bringing what are serious issues with young infertile couples, into a lighter vane. I would rate this as one of my favorite comedies of recent times. Thanks to all who put it together.
Me, Myself & Irene (2000)
Entertaining but not one for the kids
The plot had potential but did not seem to fully develop as it was very predictable. Carrey as usual, did his best to make it work. Hate the swearing used by Charlies son's, it was totally inappropriate and spoilt the movie as far as family viewing was concerned. Swearing is OK if suited to the movie. It didn't suit this movie. I fail to understand why so many good potential 'family' movies are polluted with foul-mouthed and minded scripts. The dildo and reference to anal intercourse were likewise inappropriate to script development. Disappointing, as it had lots of potential. The fight scene between Charlie and Hank was very much like the ending of 'Fight Club', which did the whole concept of duel personalities in a much more entertaining and thrilling way. Watch 'Fight Club',to the end, after this movie and you make the decision.
Fight Club (1999)
Brilliant
Man, oh man! The issues this movie tackles, and achieves so well in doing, is just totally brilliant. The ending was the best ending I have experienced in years. Fantastic plot development. Totally enthralling. Most women would probably find the whole plot concept totally sickening but then I'm more than likely wrong here. A lady said to me, "That men wouldn't like 'Thelma and Louise'", a movie with a similar statement for women as the 'Fight club' is for men, however I rated it one of my best movies ever- like the 'Fight Club', as the human issues delt with, go far deeper than what is presented on the surface. Watch it at the surface level and be thoroughly entertained; or watch it intuitively and be enthralled and knocked out for months by what this movie conveys about man's struggle for identity, in a now woman dominated world.
Man on the Moon (1999)
Carrey or Kaufman? I'm confused?
What a movie? Thoroughly entertaining and what an insight into the life of a comedian-entertainer. Having viewed most of Jim Carrey's movies one can only wonder whether he's actually a clone of Kaufman in real life? Could he, like Kaufman, be yet another extremely talented comedian-entertainer who is often maligned and ignored by the 'Hollywood set' because of his excessively eccentric behavior. (Carrey has yet to be nominated for an Oscar, despite inspirational and amazing acting like in this movie) Watch the movie and try to see the analogies and you make the decision. Thoroughly worth watching. De Vito shines as usually in a supportive role.
Thelma & Louise (1991)
Women Only?
I was challenged to view this movie when a lady friends said to me, "..Thelma and Louise, what a great movie! But men wouldn't like it!" Well she was wrong! I found it extremely entertaining, as I believe it tackles issues facing women in today's society very well. It moves at a rapid pace which I found gripping. I will never forget the 'trucker scene', and envisage that this scene expresses the inner feeling of any women who has ever been abused by us males. This should be compulsory viewing for all males, perhaps then many of them will stop treating females as purely sexual objects of man's gratification.
Rob Roy (1995)
A Bonny Pic!
Thoroughly enjoyed the romp through the heather. Good production all round. Not totally factual, but then who cares when there's so much gripping entertainment. Scotland the brave forever. Congratulations to all the production team for the great entertainment.
Mad Dog and Glory (1993)
Nice Watch but Disappointing.
De Niro- well he's one of the greats and really did his best to lift this movie into some kind of respectability. Whatever he touches he blesses and so did manage to make it work...JUST! A lighthearted romp into cop fantasy. You'll watch and probably forget.
Awakenings (1990)
Brilliant-totally unforgettable!
De Niro shines! What brilliance. This movie has been one of my top favorites since watching 10 years ago. Anyone who has, or has had, a friend/relative with mental illness should watch this one. It's a real inspiration. Thanks to all involved.
