An American Haunting (2005)
sissy spacek is a virtue
i realise my "summary" makes little to no sense, (after all, how can a person be a virtue) but having just seen 'an American haunting' i must once again profess my admiration for this woman and the gift she brings to the movie screen. while she may never surpass her work in 'carrie,' once again she brings a character to life with a degree of sincerity that drew me in, and assisted my suspension of disbelief. there were several scenes in this film bordering on camp, luckily the director seems to have allowed spacek enough room to fully embody her character and, subsequently, legitimise the film. maybe it is because of the work she has done in the past, but when i see sissy spacek on screen a degree of respectability is earned by whatever it is i am viewing.
Beat (2000)
in defence of
god, i don't even know how long it has been since i saw this film. it must have been spring of 2000, because i was on holiday to Los Angeles and saw it at that city's film festival. big surprise, i thought courtney love was amazing in this production. boo hoo to all you naysayers insisting she only plays herself and blah-blah-blah. all madonna does is play herself, and she does not even do that convincingly. what courtney love possesses is a preternatural ability to forget the camera is present. what this comfortability in front of the camera does, is provide an opportunity for her 'star quality' to shine. i believe people accuse courtney of only playing herself because she is so comfortable on screen it is assumed that she must have deep familiarity with the role.
