House of the Dragon: The Lord of the Tides (2022)
House of Endless Boredom
This show is getting worse, endlessly whining boring characters, banal dialogue and plot that is meandering going nowhere. It feels very contemporary and bland, like a fantasy soap opera with dragons. It has less and less to do with the original show. What it reminds me of is Big Little Lies but with costumes, pretentious language in a fantasy world. BLL is more fun to watch than this, no offense to the show. What happened to the strong, ruthless and determined characters? HBO should save their money and focus on something else. It's not all bad obviously but it's not great either. Some episodes are better than other but overall is quite disappointing.
Dune (2021)
So much hype about nothing!
Special effects, epic scene, ominous music, good acting and yet non nonsensical, dialogue, no character development, poor and boring story telling, one cliche after another and massive lack of cohesion. That's sums it up!
Little Fires Everywhere (2020)
Cry me a river (literally)
The show starts well but half way through turns into a Mexican telenovela. Half of the time somebody is crying or sobbing in full close up. It's over the top melodramatic.
J'ai tué ma mère (2009)
Undevelopped Story Conflict
Clearly the director has Mommy issues that he is using his film to work out. That's fine but the problem is that the conflict between the two main characters namely the son and the mother is not very well developed. The tension between the mother and the son often explodes into full blown hysterical tantrums that throws their relationship into a mayhem. However, the foundation of their relationship is very poorly developed and when one of those tantrums happen the viewer is left bedazzled WTF is happening. I get where the director is going with this film but I think it falls short and seems to get lost in his own intellectual and emotional catacombs.
Les amours imaginaires (2010)
Overrated Pretentious Film About Infatuation
This is a slow and grossly overrated film about infatuation that in its format and style resembles the previous film of the same director. The film aims to portrait the superficiality and insanity of obsessive infatuation and it succeeds to a certain extent not without boring the viewers to death. Just like in "I Killed My Mother" the director falls short of what he is trying to achieve.
Ága (2018)
It Could Have Been Great
The imagery and the music are fantastic. The story line and the slow moving pace are done well. The acting is good. However, the biggest shortcoming of this film is the lack of any kind of camera movement, none. This was the single biggest mistake of this film. Some camera movement would have imbued the movie with emotional energy and would have made the beautiful shots come to life. At times I felt as if I was looking at landscape photography or animated stills. I sort of guess the idea but it doesn't work. Everything is frozen but the camera does not need to be.
