Unfrosted (2024)
At last some fun, puns and toasted humor
While some may not have found this Snappy movie to make them Cackle...er Crackle, I found it to Pop a smile on my face. I loved the puns, even though some were milked.
We need more humor in the world. I found Unfrosted to my liking. May even try it again in the morning with coffee.
Steinfield still has it, The casting was perfect.
My review is too short? Well, sorry, I will add some more words, then. I really, really, really enjoyed this movie. I laughed out loud often, so did my spouse. The only thing is, now I am hungry for several types of cereal and one toaster treat. Thanks to all who worked on this film.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)
Engaging fun and so darn much more.
Ok, I never had a Nintendo. I had no interest in Super Mario Bros UNTIL today when I was captured by this beautifully done movie.
I had played Cosmo on a PC a number of years ago.
1. The animation grabbed me immediately
2. As soon as I was smitten by the images, the main characters took my interest
3. The plot was clever done with humor.
4. The animation, the plot, humor, drama were so all so attention grabbing that it will join a favorite movie line up to watch again and again.
Kudos to Chris Pratt, to Jack Black, Seth Rogan, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Keegan-Michael Key, Fred Armisen for the life they brought into their characters and the special voice of Lumalee: Juliet Jelenic.
I simply loved this movie. It was the best movie I have seen in a very long time.
The musical score was great. The wonderful animation and artful effects were a visual feast. Jack Black stole my heart with a love song.
I marveled at the credits at the end of the movie. So very many talented people worked to bring it to life...artists of all stripes, technical people, even the accountants!
I might just have to buy a Nintendo now! 😉
Joe Pickett (2021)
Non starter
Tried to make it through the first episode. Couldn't. I read Box's books. The timber was all wrong, characters miscast, writing terrible and acting abysmal. I was having trouble following the story line (couldn't find one...), my spouse never read Box so I asked him if he could make heads or tales of it. He agreed he couldn't.
Some TV series should just not be made; this was one of them. I reached a point to where I started to search for one of Box's books to share how good they were with my husband who is a voracious reader. He was so turned off that he wasn't at all interested. I will have to go back and reread one to see if they were as awful as this series is. Too bad.
On a Wing and a Prayer (2023)
I remember learning about the real incident when it happened
As a long time aviation buff, I was very aware of this incident when it made headlines. Not crazy about this portrayal. Hard to believe that so early in the film that the pharmacist is on his own.
Guess I wish true stories would be set up more like a documentary versus a film like this one. The first thing that was glaring to anyone who knew about the incident was that it was not filmed in Florida. Give me a true story and at least make it more authentic. The hilly topography around the Marco Island A/P doesn't exist. Picky? Maybe, but then don't say it is a true story but that is a dramatization of a short time incident expanded into a big film. I dropped out pretty quickly after children were introduced to explain what was going on.
As one reviewer said, there is a YouTube video with the actual radio transmissions. Go watch that. Don't waste your time with this one.
New Amsterdam: Cavitation (2018)
The episode veers too heavily into a controversial political realm
While some have rated this episode a 10, I couldn't because the virtue signaling era has become way too pervasive. Until this episode, I found the program interesting for a medical drama/soap opera. It would be reasonable to expect events which occurred at the time this episode was written to have an influence on the core theme. But when the writing is heavy handed or preachy I loose interest. It matters not the perspective, it matters that magic of the interplay between the characters is lost. This is not a news program. Real life is complex enough. Right now, I don't know if I will continue to watch the rest of the series if the future plots echo this episode. In addition, what is supposed to be a hollow point bullet was shown at the end. In a real situation, it would not resemble what was shown at all, nor would the main character have access to it in any stretch of the imagination because it would be in evidence. This last scene put an exclamation on my rating of 1 star.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011)
Deep and fascinating like the book
After reading the book by the same name, I wasn't sure that I wanted to watch the movie. I had pictured the characters a certain way. Sometimes the film version destroys that illusion. This was not the case at all. I thought that I had lost the opportunity to watch the film, but when Apple TV offered it, I jumped at the chance. Perhaps it is because Gary Oldham is a lead in Apple's Slow Horse mini series. I was not at all disappointed by the film. The characters were brought to life brilliantly by the cast. Le Carre's book emerged perfectly in this film. No spoilers here. Read the book, read as much of Le Carre's writings as you can find. One of the best films I have seen for a long time. It actually enhances the Slow Horse's episodes...(different author behind that take on tradecraft), so well done Apple TV.
'Twas the Fight Before Christmas (2021)
Good documentary BUT sad situation
I once lived in an HOA. I wouldn't chose to live in one again. This documentary chronicles a nightmare for the residents. The self styled champion of "religious" freedom is a self righteous bully...hardly a champion of the real meaning of Christmas
When some of the film showed the congestion caused by his over the top Christmas lighting and spectacle (with a live camel) all I could think of is what if there was an emergency and EMS or firefighters couldn't reach the incident, home or patient?
In some states it is not legal to secretly record telephone conversations, so I was shocked that Idaho apparently does not have a law preventing what Morris did. The HOA board members who were deposed, should have had an attorney representing them during the deposition. The result of the lawsuit and reversal thereof wasn't surprising but Morris isn't done. Too bad he decided to go after the judge for misconduct. I am told that most courts are not as friendly to attorneys which do that sort of thing. A documentary on why not to live in an HOA if you have any choice, IMHO, not about what a selfish bully of an attorney does. I feel sad for his wife and family who will never get to be part of a community. If this fellow does ever run for political office, beware!
LuLaRich (2021)
Binge Worthy tale of greed
Watched all the episodes with delicious popcorn as a snack. Frankly I was stunned that the products being sold would be desired by anyone. While a few prints were interesting, they were anything but flattering. The MLM side is a old story. It may not be an actual pyramid scheme but it only a hairbreadths away, in my opinion. I run from these "businesses". Sometimes they do offer good products which have a real purpose, but I don't abide the premise as a legitimate practice of business. I found myself feeling compassion for many of the women who were ensnared. Before viewing this documentary, I had never heard of this company. Even if I had, they offered nothing I would ever consider purchasing. I do think the owners used people.
Certainly an excellent documentary.
Lucifer: Bloody Celestial Karaoke Jam (2021)
Fun: one of the best episodes
Time to change a quote: Music has the charm to sooth the savage soul. I just loved this episode.
The Lady and the Dale (2021)
The Tiger King sells cars
The illustrations are at first very distracting, but after the third episode this device didn't seem so out of place because of the long con which was unfolding. This is a case of truth being stranger than fiction again (referencing The Tiger King.) Guess I should have titled the review The Tiger King sells illusion.
Scrubs (2001)
Medical humor which aged well
This series was enjoyable when it came out. Rewatched it recently and found it to be as funny as the first time I watched it. The chemistry between the cast is the glue which keeps it fresh...that and the snippets of what really happens in teaching hospitals couched in humor. Plan on rewatching the entire series again. Good comedy is a rarity today.
The Surgeon's Cut: Sacred Brain (2020)
Missing surgeries
The episode was almost all about who the surgeon was personally. While he may have faced many obstacles to become a neurosurgeon, almost no time was spent on showing his talents in the OR or the positive results he achieved. Compared to the first episode, it was very disappointing.
Modern Love: So He Looked Like Dad. It Was Just Dinner, Right? (2019)
Started it...stopped it. Creepy.
Not my cup of tea. Good actors, bad idea. The young woman/older man thing is not new but the dynamics here just turned me off.
Living with Yourself (2019)
Binge Worthy
Enjoyed the twists and turns of this mini series. The concept was intriguing, it could have been a trite series, and it almost wasn't, except for a bit of a predictable ending. Still worth a 10 star for me. Really enjoyed seeing the talented lead actors develop their characters. I hope a second season is forthcoming.
Tombstone Territory: Johnny Ringo's Last Ride (1958)
Like a bad version of the Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp
Why fake out the death of a real western gunslinger? The acting was wooden and the script worse than any others in this series so far.
