Valhalla Rising (2009)
Very different from what we are used to seeing.
I admit, I am the more average movie fan. I don't get into a lot of symbolism or deep meaning. I do enjoy psychological movies and movies that make you think, but overall I enjoy a basic action flick or comedy. Now this movie obviously isn't for everyone. I did find some parts to be long and drawn out. I didn't even know any of the characters names except One Eye and there were times when I didn't feel as if the story was going anywhere. I do think this was a solid movie though and I feel people can at least see a different style of film making than what most of us are used too. They have little to no dialogue, but thats not such a bad thing. I would rather have little meaningful dialogue, than a lot of boring meaningless dialogue. The scenery is stunning also. I enjoyed the camera work, although the music was a bit repetitive and annoying at times. I really loved the story of vengeance, freedom, and finding your true self. Even though the main character doesn't say a word, we see his character evolve and see so many different sides of him. I know its not what people are used too and many probably wont get into it. But even though I didn't understand all the meaning and symbolism in the story and editing, I still enjoyed it and took something away from it.
Battles BC (2009)
The History Channel finally has some great programming once again.
I love history with a passion and often the History Channel has let me down. Although Ax Men is entertaining, I don't think a channel about History really should have a reality show. Battles BC is a truly entertaining and educational show. Here we learn about these ancient battles and the mighty leaders and warriors who helped create empires and wage war. They blend riveting historical accuracy with flashy new age imagery. Now obviously the fighting scenes they have aren't totally accurate, but they weren't meant to be. They are there to put fast paced action alongside this magnificent history lesson. This show is a real treat to watch and I am really thankful that the History Channel finally has something really entertaining and educational to watch. I only hope this program doesn't go the way of Decisive Battles and Command Decisions. The History Channel needs to keep great programming like this on and forget about reality shows and programs about monsters and UFOs. Please History Channel, keep this amazing show on and teach us all more about the legendary Battles BC.
