Kung Fu Panda 4 (2024)
A BRAZILIAN/GEN Z REVIEW
Kung Fu Panda 4 tells the story of the giant panda Po, who is the Dragon Warrior and has now been tapped to become the Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace. Po is joined by Master Shifu (a red panda), Tai Lung (a snow leopard), and Zhen.
That said, this movie, in this premise, is good. That's because of the great animation this film has. A great animation I say because it has a lot of secondary animation, that is motions generated as a reaction to the movement of primary motion by a character. Other good thing is the production design, that is very good too, cause goes very well with the characters, feels fluid. The soundtrack by Hans Zimmer, is fine too by reason of makes me feel in the mood that the sound director wanted me to feel at that moment. And the movie has a satisfactory comedy, made me laugh a lot when I was watching the movie.
Nonetheless, this movie has some problems too.
The writing in this movie is a problem due to the fast pacing because some character feels flat, like the villain, who have no motivation at all in this movie. I mean that she doesn't have a good backstory or something to be interested. Feels flat.
I wanted to see the furious five in this movie. Cause in the other movies they were needed, but in this movie they were not even showed. That's sad.
In conclusion, this movie is good, a solid movie, that has a lot of good things and some flaws.
Pluto (2023)
A BRAZILIAN/GEN Z REVIEW
Pluto is an anime based on manga of the same name, which have an argument about robots live with humans, there's a detective named Gesicht, he looks into a murder without any trace of humans. And it's a mature manga adaptation with a lot of characters personal philosophies, motivation, clear objectives, internal conflicts.
For example: Gesicht, himself, that has a philosophy about not killing any robots cause to his programation that is due to who created him. That's related to his past, which he kills a human with anger and that makes him not kill any human at all or at least try to not kill any human.
And Pluto which is named after a death god that is from an ancient Greek religion and mythology that tells was the ruler of the Greek underworld.
Great stories are told with deep philosophies like this! Cause it attract our attention to the screen.
Not just that, but the animation is really fluid. Because the animation follow the principles of animation, like secondary action (an additional action that supports the main act), follow through and overlapping action (Overlapping action is the idea that different parts of a body will move at different rates) and Follow-through (the idea that certain appendages and body parts might continue to move even after a motion is completed).
Characters design are interesting to cause to your complexity with a lot of details in their faces and bodies, making them very expressive. It's really unique anime style because it's really different than other animes released this year.
The flaw it's the use of CGI, cause draws my attention off the screen because of really bad CGI modelling that has a lot of deformations and don't feel fluid with the environment.
Overall, it is a great anime series with a lot of attention to details, in the characters, philosophies and all. If you like a good noir I would recommend to everyone who likes a good noir.
My Adventures with Superman (2023)
Generic
Generic because the animation tries to be anime in every way but nothing feels an anime or even natural, I think this animation wanted to be like chainsaw man animation, but it felt more like Blue Period animation, which (in relation to the principles of animation) is terrible. That don't have any movements at all! It's noticeable that the animator wanted to make it quickly and focus on details on, character design, which is ok, but looked more an illustration or PowerPoint in a lot of moments. For Example: There's a shot we're Lois Lane talks to Jimmy in which she puts her hand on top of him. In the next shot her hands are in the air (?????????). I didn't understand that in any way, seriously.
But for storytelling is generic too due to feelings of the characters that's so exaggerated like every high school comedy ever. I got the impression that they wanted to do like Kaguya-Sama, but the atmosphere was not like that an all because it wanted to write drama, but I's more a comedy than anything else in the writing.
And there's Jimmy, which is just for comedy purposes. He does not have any motivation at all to believe in what he believes, because he is such an idiot like Zenitsu (Demon Slayer) and I can't think anything more of him than just it.
At least, the voice acting is very good, the tone is just right, the modulation of the voices, convincing.
In the conclusion: it was generic, doesn't' have heart on it, it was anything that I watched before, which is very bad. I don't recommend it.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022)
I just want to analyze the movie here. I love it!
Yes, I love it!
Here is why:
Let's start with animation and visuals... Cause it's the best part film! The animation is really fluid, with a lot of movement, personality, it's fast and slow (when it needs), fur animation (rare animation). What I want to say is that is the animation is gorgeous and really different from any other animated film that I watched over the years. Everything that I write here is in principles of animation, like anticipation (character prepares to do an action), slow in and slow out (acceleration of actions) and a lot of other animation things that make this movie out of this world. For me, it's not normal what this movie did with animation, I mean it! And the characters designs are unique as well, with colors vibrant, very well shaped, with different items which makes them distinct from every other character (what is good to understand those characters well), sometimes the designs makes fun of themselves (which I really like)... it's just perfect in every aspect. Production design (Scenarios) is brilliant as well with cartoon designs (like the characters), colors true to color psychology (that is a study about the influence of colors in our brains) and color theory (human perception of colors). Like when the wolf appears and make the screen red to produce the viewer thinking to know that this guy is really DANGEROUS (cause of the red). Well I think that's all in the part of visuals thingy.
Now, to storytelling/narrative... It's great as well, but sometimes it's just a little predictable due to conveniences in the story, like when Goldilocks says something o bears and... Pickles (puss in boots) hear the whole conversation... why they say that out loud?? It just doesn't make sense. But it doesn't make the movie bad, it's just a convenience that a lot of movies do, but it's not like one scene, it's a lot, BUT, this doesn't make the movie bad, it's normal, it's in the premise of the film, so it's ok. It has good parts to, like in the final (which made me cry, a little XD), cause it's just too beautiful when Puss in boots accepts the friendship with the other characters. And the antagonist is really good too, because I think is so good, and it's really scary sometimes, because of the moment when he shows up, when the main character know that he can die, the moment is perfect! And the girlfriend of the main character shows up in perfect time too. She has good timing, great motivation (with past and own philosophies). All characters are really well written (good motivation and past, in general). Actually, maybe Death should have more past and motivations.... only maybe, probably. So in general the movie is well written, not just the characters but the World too. Because it has world building due to fairy tales, it's a meta to those, like the Goldilocks, Little Jack Horner, all the magic in the movie... Is very well done! And the message, that is live the life like if its was the last is really good! They had screen time to do everything they needed but I didn't see the time pass because it's dynamic and very well build! Congratulations to whoever wrote this movie! It's almost perfect!
So, now I just want to watch the new Shrek movie that this movie teases with my "Far Far Away" logo and the dialogues in the end which makes this movie more perfect!!!!
See ya, in the next review! =D.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
A BRAZILIAN/GEN Z REVIEW
I'm 21,I never watched the first movie. So, I've seen people said that this movie is awesome and all. So I watched this movie.
This movie has a well done characters development, that has their own past, story and individuality. Each one has different mind construction and meanings. It just... the characters are unique.
The action sequences are amazing, I don't even know how was the production for the action sequences, but, it makes difference in the narrative. Mostly for Maverick (Tom Cruise), that is the MC (obviously). Because it's him that determinate what will happen(mostly). It not just him, the other characters too, but a lot of time, Maverick chance the direction of the story.
What I like the most was the cinematography, which is really subjective, focusing their emotions. This film don't make it really explicit what they mean, we know just for seeing their faces, expressions, movements and all.
The direction was really good too for framed the sequences so well done. It was just like that this movie had a lot of wallpapers inside! But not only beautiful, but told a story.
But this movie has some problems. Which are that the Maverick, for me, is perfect (in general), don't have many flaws, he just could make some impossible things without fail. I say that cause it makes more believable and reliable. Like "The Batman" (2022), which can fail a lot of times and even lose the battle. Top Gun Maverick don't have those flaws, Maverick just do the tricks easily, just for fanservirce (in my opinion). The flaws don't make it bad, it just exists.
Lastly, Top Gun Maverick is a good watch, solid. One of the best movies of the year!!!!!
Moonfall (2022)
Conspiracy and edgy movie
Well... let's start from the beginning, this movie is bad. Wait, let me explain...
It's a movie that believes the moon is hollow, just because! I mean, it doesn't have any really motivation for that, logical or not, they just believe on a fake thing and wants the audience to believes it too. Motivation is the process that initiates someone to do something , in this case believe in a hollow on the moon, that is something i couldn't find anything to support this argument, not in the movie even outside. So, from the scratch this movie doesn't work.
Hang on, there is more!
This movie doesn't know what genre is. Sometimes it wants to be a comedy, thriller, action... but falls at everything. Cause this movie can't focus in anything, it just random, doesn't go deep in anything. Talking about deepness, i want to refer is the motivation that i wrote before, the past of the character (part of the character that makes a trace of personality of him). The comedy... Anyone laughs in my movie session, either do i. I think the reason is that the gags sounded like it was out of it's place. It's a serious movie (in general), so... why do i want to laugh in that? People dying, part of the moon was destroyed... I don't want to laugh in that.
Another problem:
This movie is too serious and edgy! Even the colors, dark blue and black (a lot of times). It does not have motive to use this color scheme, because it want to be a comedy and it not works on that kinda movie what is sci-fi (i think), it's more for (just) terror movies or (just) thriller, cause this kind of movies wants to scary me, Moonfall, not. The themes of discussion are really serious too, even it's a fake news (like i said before) and the exaggeration of it. Exaggerated movies are normally not taken too serious, like Borat, exaggerated, but not serious. In Moonfall the characters goes to the center of moon and it was like truth or really interesting, fot the characters it was WOW, but for me MEH, because was exaggerated and taken serious!
Technical aspect:
Cinematography does well to pass the message that move is serious (like i said before), focusing in emotions of the characters and not anything really creative like a long shot to make it subjective, just med shots for us to see the emotions of he characters. Editing do the same thing as well. And the VFX was the best part of the movie i really believed in (even if the characters does not interact with that). VFX had like 'ray tracing' in some parts, have secondary actions (Twelve basic principles of animation) which is good for the VFX of this movie, cause made the movie more believable. Even the 'ray tracing' makes more believable.
Final opinion:
If you want to see a movie with good Visual effects go see this movie! But with you want a movie with good storytelling that impacts you, don't go see this movie, go watch 'spider-man no way home' instead.
The Suicide Squad (2021)
Almost perfect!
That is to say, the direction of the James Gunn is awesome! Making the acting and the photography perfect. Like the scene that all the fight happens inside the helmet of Peacemaker. This scene is great because it's not only visually awesome, it's makes sense on the narrative, such as the character who's fighting is the character who uses the helmet and this probably inside the mind of him. And when the Bloodsport command the group to attack the starro, making a travelling with the characters in an over the shoulder of the Bloodsport, such as he is the leader of the squad, commanding the squad.
Not just the direction, but the acting is really great too! I believed in every character, not even imagined who was the actor that role-played a specific scene or whatever, just immersive characters! And the actors didn't make the characters flat, they were very emotional, it was made with heart! Talking about characters... They were deep, even a little, but every character was deep in this film. Cause every character had a past, other side... Making their human, relatable, understandable. For example: Ratcatcher 2 when she talks about her dad. And that scene that show her past inside the window, interacting with the place where she is, just perfect!
I laughed a lot with this movie, it has a great timing! Almost every time when the King Shark I laugh, he's a very stupid fella, makes a lot of idiot things, but not every second. When the Amanda Waller explains the mission, and he questions it, he just said "hand" LOL.
And almost perfect, just that I wish this film could be a little faster... I mean, they explained a lot sometimes. Such as the "8 minute earlier" when they were at the tower, I think it wasn't completely necessary, because I would understand this scene without this "8 minute earlier". But it should not affect the movie in general, it's just a little thing what does not interfere in the whole movie.
So... If you watched the movie, watch again! Or even if you don't, watch! Cause this movie was made with heart!
Monster Hunter (2020)
Action for action
I mean, there is no story here, just action, action is meaningless. For example:
The main character (Artemis) have no reason for be there because she was just transported like whatever. The rest of the movie is the same of what i've written down here, meaningless.
At least this movie has an acceptable cinematography and editing.
