Bums (2006)
funny look at relationships
This film is a funny look at relationships. While it is obviously from a man's perspective, I really enjoyed how realistic this film is in depicting relationships amongst early to mid 20s losers in a small town. I think this was filmed in Toronto, though I am not entirely sure. Either way the black and white looks really great and it really helps set the tone and mood of the movie (kind of like Clerks, the original not the sequel). The acting is really great, with the Asian girl (can't recall her name) delivering some of the movie's best lines. I don't think girls really talk like that, at least some of my friends don't, but I'm sure somewhere they exist. Anyway, this is a great film about relationships and I highly recommend it.
Zero Day (2002)
interesting cinema verite movie
I am a big fan of cinema verite and saw this movie because I heard how interesting it was. I can honestly say it was very interesting indeed. The two lead actors are awesome, the film isn't ever boring, and the concept behind it (though obviously inspired by the Columbine killings and the home movies of the killers) is really interesting. There are some weaknesses, such as the final 20 minutes which really detracts from the realism seen in the first hour or so and the ending really doesn't make any sense at all. The shaky camera sometimes can be a distraction, but in cinema verite that is a given. But I still think the movie is very well done and the director Ben Coccio deserves some credit.
Emo Pill (2006)
absolutely stunning, beautiful film
Emo Pill is Anthony Spadaccini's latest film, a short film about a suicidal and depressed kid whose world is coming apart at the seams. If you are not familiar with Anthony Spadaccini's work, his films are artsy and always beautiful to look at. This might turn some people off, but for me it was an incredible movie. And beautiful to listen to as well. The score for this film is awesome, to say the least. The composer did a great job. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Spadaccini at the world premiere of this film and he was very nice and explained some of the interesting red herrings and images in the film. Emo Pill is not for everyone, but it's a beautiful, artsy, and stunning film that will capture the imagination of those who watch it.
Monday Morning (2005)
really really funny
this is a truly funny film. i can relate to everything in the film, who hasn't had a morning like the one that our hero trevor in the film goes through. from the bar of soap, bleach, shampoo, forgetting things, then the rude people at the bus stop. a fantastic film through and through. i think Anthony Spadaccini is a very talented director as he has shown through his other films and now with this one. i look forward to seeing more from him, he seems to like to make very unique films. Nate Edwards is really good in the lead role and i think he has a future in the film industry, especially with comedies. this is a far cry from Spadaccini's last three films, but that's a good thing too.
Hatred (2006)
stunning climax
I saw this sequel to Unstable at the same festival this year as Unstable and I liked it a lot. I thought it was a very good story that deals with moving on and forgiving. The first half is slower than I expected, but it is very realistic as another user said previously. The acting by Anthony Spadaccini is incredible. He goes through many emotions in the hour and a half film and ends up taking part in a very stunning climax that left me sad, angry, and stunned all at the same time. The acting by the rest of the cast is very good too. Steve Brown is one of my favorite characters in the film, he seems to be one of the only characters that is genuinely likable. I liked the black Jeff character (don't know the name of the actor) even though he wasn't in it very long. The two character's on the movie's poster are only in it in the second half and are more minor characters than you think. But they do a very good job too (the older guy was especially creepy). I recommend this movie!
Unstable (2005)
very realistic!
I saw this at the indie can film festival in toronto this year. I really couldn't tell you from watching this film if it were real or not. The director & star Anthony Spadaccini really made this look real, even though later on i found out that this was all fake. The acting is great, the story is heart breaking, and the ending will make you cry. It certainly made me cry! Unfortunately Spadaccini wasn't at the Q&A afterwards though I wish he was, I had questions about some things regarding the ending. my favorite performance was from Spadaccini, he is a really good actor. I think everyone did a great job, even though the crew was so small, and i am giving this movie a perfect 10 because of the way it spoke to me about hate crimes in general.
