Shadow and Bone (2021)
Absolutely love it !
I hadn't read the books and casually put the episode on one night when I was working on my laptop. I didn't get any work done because the show drew me in right away and I binge watched it in two days! One of the best fantasy shows I've seen, much better than the Witcher in my opinion.
The performances are amazing, the costumes breathtaking, the special effects really beautiful! I can't wait for the next season !
Dark (2017)
So Good!
This show has everything, suspense, great acting, a beautiful soundtrack, a fascinating (and mind boggling) story and amazing attention to detail. The ending was perfection too, something which a lot of series always mess up. Not this one!
The Queen's Gambit (2020)
Totally took me by surprise
I hadn't heard about this show and was just looking for something interesting one night. Little did I know I was about to watch one of the best series of 2020, definitely the best of the year for me!
Everything about this series drew me in, Anya's stellar performance, the music, the costumes, the screenplay and of course chess!! This series is beautiful from the onset and throughout.
Even if you don't play chess you will enjoy it, but if you do it will be even better !
Miseuteo Shunshain (2018)
In love with this show
I started this show not knowing what to expect and just 30 minutes into the first episode I knew this was going to be great. Everything from the directing and acting to the soundtrack and the costumes is extraordinary. If you're into period dramas, definitely give it a go!
Gretel & Hansel (2020)
10 for atmosphere but it misses something
I'm glad this movie dares to be different. Slow, atmospheric, with little to no jump scares and a real "witchy" feel. You want blood and gore and action? You're out of luck, go somewhere else.
But...the movie did miss something.
I don't mind if a movie doesn't overexplain, but this one had annoying plot holes. The acting was good overall but Hansel just got on my nerves, I was hoping he'd be eaten by the witch!
In all seriousness, a great effort to be original and dark, but the story had to be a bit richer with more background information just to make the audience feel more engaged.
A Primeira Tentação de Cristo (2019)
For the few with a good sense of humour
Come on, it's funny! Don't listen to those people who can't handle their precious ideals and delusions being mocked. Sure, not everyone will like it, it caters to those with a dry and a bit dark sense of humor, but it's witty and takes everything with a grain of salt. A big grain of salt.
The End of the F***ing World (2017)
Love it!
I love how cleverly written this show is. Dark and gritty and yet also light and hilarious at times. I think the second season is even better!
The performances are great and do their weird and interesting characters justice. I keep watching another one and another one, it's addictive.
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance (2019)
I'm so glad it's back!!
Why aren't more fantasy movies/series like this? It's unique, beautiful, moving and enthralling... It's evident that so much effort and attention to detail has been put into every little thing; the costumes, the sets, the voice acting. I am so glad one of my favourite childhood movies has been brought back and I hope the younger generation will learn to appreciate it as well.
Not everything is better with tons of CGI. Brian Froud and Jim Henson are a fantastic duo.
The Lion King (2019)
Don't listen to the naggers
No matter how hard you try and how much effort and love you put in something you create, there will always be those people that will nag about it and find faults in something. Don't listen to them and form your own opinion.
People nag about the "emotionless, wooden animals"...they are animals!! Not caricature lions from the original cartoon. Lions don't have our facial expressions. Instead they added realistic body language like flattening ears or bearing teeth. That was the point! The emotion is in the fantastic voice acting (except Beyonce) and in the realistic movements of the animals. I loved that about the movie.
The CGI was enthralling, it left me gazing at every detail, every blade of grass and stone and puff of dust. Congratulations to everyone involved. Rant ends here.
