Wish You Were Here (1987)
Loved This Movie - Quite Different, Funny, Poignant Story
I watched half last night and couldn't wait to finish it today. Emily Lloyd was absolutely phenomenal and I want to get more movies with her in it. All of the actors were excellent, from her aunt, to the Dad, to his friend.
Lynda was quite a character in this movie and you can understand why some kids act out like they do. I can relate to Lynda and make sense of some of the things I did as a kid after watching this. It was often hilarious and sometimes painful to watch. The acting is so incredible, you really could feel the emotion. And you feel for the father who can't control her, no matter what he tries to do.
British films are always so different from the norm. I love their artistic approach where everything is not spelled out for you and you have to make some inferences on your own. As such, every person's perspective is a little bit different. And the situations are always such real, every day type of situations from which they can spin a great story. I highly recommend this film.
It is not for children as there are many adult situations. Although I'm usually pretty loose with an R rating, I won't allow my tween children to watch this. Frankly, I don't think that kids would necessarily enjoy it anyway - as it's more of an adult drama with some funny and awkward moments.
Lost in Translation (2003)
One of The Most Built-Up and Boring Movies I've Ever Seen
I don't know if it was a case of "too much build-up" or what, but this movie was monotonous and lame. After I suffered through it, waiting to see what all the talk was about, I felt cheated out of a couple of hours of my life. Thereafter, just to prank people, I recommended it to friends as one of the best ones I had ever seen. Every one of my friends came back with the same question, "Seriously, you liked that movie?" None of us could figure out what all the fuss was about.
Maybe if I saw it at the movies when it first came out, I might have found some appreciation for it. The acting was fine - but didn't require much talent to act out mere conversations with a bit of sexual tension. It was simply a monotonous story line. All I can say is, "Booooring - with a capital B!"
Midnight Run (1988)
This Movie Has It All - Can't Be Made Any Better Than It Already Is!!!
One of my favorite movies of all time that is one of the few that I actually own! Every time somebody comes to visit, they know they will have to watch Midnight Run with me. It is the only movie I can watch again and again because it just never gets old. It is the perfect duo of opposing personalities in Deniro and Grodin. It's a shame they haven't been paired up in other movies because these two characters make the movie. I even let my 9 year old watch it because there is nothing gory or scary and there is no sex - just a lot of swears. And frankly, without the swears, it is not nearly as funny. I've seen it on regular censored t.v. and when they replace "f*ck" with "hell", it definitely loses something. This would probably be rated PG-13 nowadays given the language. The cast of other characters (from the bail bondsman, to the other bounty hunter, to the mafia, to the police) is also incredible. Whoever chose the cast in this movie deserves an award - and so does the screenplay and the movie. It has it all - comedy, constant action, drama, some mild (child friendly "cops and robbers" type) violence, some good, bad, and ugly, and just an outstanding and memorable story line. My son is 9 and he loves it. Any younger than 9, and the kids probably wouldn't quite understand it because there are so many different characters and so many things going on - they might have a lot of questions. Otherwise, if you don't have a big problem with some serious foul language and one reference to sex (referenced with the "f" word only), it can be a great family movie that everybody will totally enjoy!!!
Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (2012)
Went For My Son & We Laughed & Loved It!
Did not know what to expect as I didn't see the first one - but they are totally unrelated so it didn't matter. My 9 year old wanted to see it so we ended up going. I'm not a lover of sci-fi but this movie was a perfect family movie and we laughed out loud lots of times. Nothing gory or scary. It was a light and refreshingly, fun movie. Had four different movie personalities of all ages and genders amongst us (2 kids, 2 adults) - and all of us loved it. We didn't expect it would also be a laugh out loud movie and that is what made it unexpectedly great! Go one, go all - this movie has it all: action, comedy, romance, sci-fi, and good family fun!
