Gods and Generals (2003)
Awful. Felt like watching a nazi propaganda movie.
Stuffy, cartoonish acting in a boring, insufferable movie. Longer than a dead man's dream. They managed to make drama, conflict and war boring, which is no small feat. I thought I would learn something but I felt like watching a pre-war nazi propaganda movie, all choreographed and cartoonish. No mention of the causes of the war, slavery, black people or anything like that. No black faces to be seen except cheering their tormentors (?).... I wonder who consumes this Disneyland version of history. Avoid like Covid and the plague put together.
Diego Maradona (2019)
Not the best footballer... A god!
As a footballer, he was in a different category altogether. So full of skill and passion... capable of miracles like taking a mediocre team to the pinnacle.
As a person, impossible not to relate too and ultimately to love. The story of Elvis Presley, Morrison, Janis and many others who shone very brigtly at a huge cost.
The film is excellent and helped me understand this very complex character. Highly recommended.
Oro (2017)
Awful, awful movie
Cartoonish, but in a bad sense. 90% of the time the conquistadors wander around in the jungle carrying tons of steel, guns, armour, and all sorts of weapons... I wonder if they eat at all, because they don't carry food, or pots to cook, or stuff to sleep or spare cloths... At least Aguirre had porters to do the heavy lifting.
The dialog sounds (I am a native Spanish speaker) like the mockery of a bad 1950's movie... The characters act like robots, doing things without a motive (this is probably a problem with the original script). The jungle looks like Madrid's botanic gardens. In summary, the producers should have deleted the files before embarrassing themselves.
His Dark Materials (2019)
A pleasant surprise!
First I must say that I am a big fan of the books and at first I was reluctant to watch this series after the fiasco that was the movie. I waited quite a long time to start watching, however I was not disappointed.
This series captures the mood of the books and makes justice to most of the characters... It is darker, moody and very British! Just like the books. It is also visually well done. I was waiting for the next seasons and will recommend the series, the same I did with the books. I did not give it a 10/10 because some of the characters could be improved and the personality of the daemons is a bit more low-key than they deserve. The rest is spot on.
