Obi-Wan Kenobi: Part VI (2022)
What was the point?
A poor space chase, highly contrived and written by someone who doesn't know how Star Wars works.
Followed by
A Vader/Obi-wan fight that's visually not a patch on movie Episode 3 and a forgettable soundtrack.
Throw in
A great scene from Rebels but replace Ahsoka with Obi Wan and Matt Lanter with Hayden Christensen.
Finish off with
A mishmash of ret-cons and unnecessary epilogue.
Obi-Wan Kenobi: Part V (2022)
Awful, riddled with plot holes
The siege of the rebels base made no sense whatsoever, not in setup nor execution nor resolution.
The writers are just trolling the audience at this point.
Very pleased to note that the other live action SW shows have no overlap with the writing team behind this mess.
Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022)
An underwhelming show & a squandered opportunity
4 episodes in there's been enough run time for reasonable conclusions to be drawn.
I can't hide my disappointment for a show which should have been the TV event of the year (it's not even close).
Most of the shows issues stem from chronically poor writing. Led by Joby Harold the writing team have crafted a show featuring:
Too many illogical plot points to count
A lack of knowledge concerning basic SW continuity
Under developed and mis-handled villains brimming with incompetence
It's not all bad, Vivien Blair and Ewan McGregor both put in decent performances.
On a side note, why does a six episode show need 19 different producers? Assuming everyone's taking a cut it might explain why the show looks so cheap in places.
Star Trek: Discovery: That Hope Is You, Part 1 (2020)
Ignore the hate filled whiners, Discovery continues to improve.
I enjoyed this a lot.
Pacing felt right, a great score, the sprinkling of clues as to what this season will be about kept me interested, great performances from the 2 central protagonists and a budget to back it all up.
Also, 100% Star Trek.
Enjoy!
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
Crestfallen when I left the cinema
Posting this review about 22 months after seeing Episode 8 in the cinema but I remember how crestfallen I felt at just how poor the movie was, it was a very similar feeling to how I felt on seeing The Phantom Menace for the first time.
How could Star Wars go so wrong? Every dangling plot thread from the previous movie was either ignored or handled in an utterly underwhelming way or in a manner that was disrespectful to the franchise. The plot made little sense, the action looked good but again made little sense, the space chase was dull in the extreme, the character development went into reverse, the movie timeline made no sense whatsoever, the comedy fell flat throughout and to top it off the movie manages to undercut some of the previous entries in the franchise which was a pretty shocking failure.
Rian Johnston's a talented director, his work on Breaking Bad was amazing but between his work on Looper and The Last Jedi I can only conclude he doesn't 'get' sci-fi and for the sake of everyone involved needs to steer well clear of it in future.
Phantasm (1979)
Hilariously poor
Watched this for the first time recently, I must admit I was surprised that this has been categorised as a horror, it's pure comedy from start to finish.
With career worst performances from everyone involved, awful dialogue, absolutely no editing finesse and a budget that doesn't do the concept justice the movie has a laugh out loud moment in nearly every scene.
Note to other reviewers, please stop mentioning this movie in the same sentence as genuine 70's horror classics, it's not worthy of it.
