The Book of Boba Fett (2021)
A great concept, but the execution? Not so much.
Text: Going into this series, i didn't have any expectations or hopes. Well i did hope it would be as good as The Mandalorian, but it just wasn't. First off, this is really slow, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but with the plot being so thin, the slowness makes absolutely zero sense.
The fight scenes were so awkward. I felt myself gaping at how laughable the poses and fight stances were, especially with the weird group of kids. The group made no sense with the story, and further lowered whatever rating I would give in the end.
Cad Bane is such a cool character, so what was the through process behind his character? Wasted potential, and really didn't add anything to the plot of the series.
Was there any good? Absolutely! The scenery is absolutely gorgeous, as star wars movies very rarely betray, and episode 5 and 6 (really just the story of The Mandalorian) were enthralling! The music were as good as ever.
Something about this whole series feel a bit uncoordinated and make-up-things-as-we-go. I will give this a 6, despite all the bad, because it's not a bad series over all, I just expected much more from star wars. A great concept, but the execution? Not so much.
Westworld (2016)
If anything, you should watch it.
Westworld started off as a cool concept i wanted to try out. No prior knowledge, except for the fact that Westworld is a world created for people to act just like they want without any consequences. In other words, my expectations were nonexistent.
*EXPLAINING OF PLOT, BUT NO SPOILERS*
The creatures of which people can kill, rape, hurt, etc. Are extremely realistic robots, made to look just like humans. However, they act as npc's with somewhat of a set amount of answers and dialogue, or that is what we would like to think.
*END OF EXPLANATION*
The story touches in on the possibilities of artificial intelligences, and where morals and ethics might need to be put into consideration, when using and being near technology. Are we too self centered to ever believe that something non-human could have a conscious.
The first season was absolutely amazing. It made me sick and nauseous, because of the realistic portrayal of these robots, and the cruelty of humans. To see something so horrifyingly disgusting being done towards human-like creatures, might seem far fetched in real life, when in reality it is not.
I do believe that, as well as many other movies and series, there are things we can learn from this fictive story, that might not be so unrealistic in our society.
To end this little review, i must say I got a little disappointed with the second and third season, where things spiralled out of control, the drama was all over the place, and the character developments seemed rushed and not scripted well enough. The first season is unforgettable, the two others, are unfortunately not.
Thousands of points on all seasons for special effects, vfx, cgi, etc. And just the beautiful scenery and cinematography. I was mind-blown throughout the whole series. This goes for the film music too.
I'd love to give this amazing series a 9 or maybe even a 10, if it wasn't for the rapid decline in quality from season one.
Gake no ue no Ponyo (2008)
Ghibli did it again
I watched this for the first time with my girlfriend who grew up with it. I initially thought that she might've exaggerated how good it is based on childhood nostalgia, but I was clearly wrong. The colours and the characters are absolutely dreamy, and the overall experience was so pleasing to the eye. No, the plot doesn't really make too much sense, and trying to find hidden meanings behind every nook and turn of this movie will be hopeless, but that might be the point. Just sit back, relax, and enjoy this exhilarating and beautiful movie.
The Mandalorian (2019)
Not much better out there.
Yes, my hopes and expectations were high when starting this series. Star Wars, having its importance in many of our lives and childhoods, will make us have high expectations of the following stories. This series did, however, not disappoint at all. I watched every episode the second they came out, and when finished, wanted to start over again immediately. Star Wars music and scenery never disappoints, and when it comes to The Mandalorian, they went above and beyond. The plot was thick, the characters well made and the cinematography amazing. There is really not much more to say about this masterpiece, except, Disney have got to learn how to write female characters. If you are a Star Wars fan, or not, watch this beautiful story.
The Midnight Gospel (2020)
Absolutely amazing
The Midnight Gospel is this cute and weird mix between cartoons that we all love, and podcasts about religion, existential questions and general beliefs. The animation is great, and the colours are pleasing to the eye. The topics are enticing and the voices seem to know what they are talking about, but it's also about not having all the answers. If you like podcasts, give it a go. I do think the episodes might be a bit too much and too long at times, but to each their own.
Mononoke-hime (1997)
I never want it to end.
The environmental aspect of ghibli movies are very well, subtly put into the plot and storyline. How innovation gets us further, but also holds us back. In the end, the fight to making technology more efficient, will often lead to the destruction of our own home (planet). Also the cynicism of people when it comes to bettering ones own situation, takes away all consideration for other beings. This movies animation, characters, emotions and sceneries are so well made. I recommend this movie to all.
Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (2001)
Visual masterpiece!
I am amazed with the visuals! The colours and the characters are beautifully created and animated. The story is well made, and clearly not just for children. With topic such as greed and superstition, everyone can learn and gain from listening to others beliefs and thoughts. A beautifully made movie overall.
Joker (2019)
Will leave you thinking.
The cuts, the music, the contrasts and the characters. Everything is well put together, the plot is thick and the scenery is beautiful. The organised chaos and the decriminalisation of the Joker really left me thinking. We talk a lot about genetic and environmental influences and how that forms a person, kids and adults. Also seeing how the alienating of disabled or different people can lead to misery and hate, should be an eye opener for many. I might be reading into this too much, but maybe, as we can from most movies, books and stories, we can learn something.
Dark (2017)
The execution is perfect
Acting, cinematography, characters, concept and execution. Extremely well made series that will leave you with more questions for every episode. There is this glumness and melancholy over the series that adds this terrifying, exhilarating and wanting feeling in your belly. All the twists and turns, the questions of morality and moral dilemmas, as well as existential questions just make this story so beautiful.
