From start to finish - this original Sci-Fi channel offering marks a new level of quality for television genre production. The lavish costumes and elaborate sets highlight a thorough telling of the science fiction classic. Despite some weak casting - most notably the lead actor who portrays Paul - this production takes the time and patience to explore the most important narrative details from the novel. Although some casual fans may still be confused over certain plot points, this production hits most of the necessary dramatic notes.
As for the DVD itself - we're treated to a 2 disc set with some nice supplements. Concept illustrations of costumes provide a peak into the creative wardrobe process. And the set is rounded out by an essay written by the cinematographer who clearly is a big fan of the novels.
Because of the dismal performance of David Lynch's theatrical version, the Dune books had an uncertain future in movies/tv. Recently, the sci-fi channel has expressed interest in producing the remaining books in the series. Perhaps that is the most important legacy of this well crafted production.
