The Perfect Storm (2000)
throw out the baby with the bath water?
This has got to be in the vein of movies that are based off the 'true story' like the movie Amityville Horror is based off the real book thats based off the 'true story'- who knows what really happened but it had to be something. This movie is definitely fiction. There has got to be no question of that. And it's too bad really, because the more realistic version would have been very interesting and so-much-more thoughtful. I was definitely hoping for it actually, and felt I got nowhere near what it was worth. While it's incredible that people really do choose professions that involve this kind of extremity, the people in this movie would have had not the depth to endeavor anything outside of the tides of the Hollywood box office. Not that Clooney didn't do a good job. He was alright, all the characters were okay, but come on. Character development can be more than wild cheering after the action hits. It had moments, they were it's own too, I supposed. All in all I was sitting and thinking that so many of these happenings were pretty unlikely and in the meantime watching the characters flicker back and forth; occasionally being distracted by the imagination surrounding the action of the sea and thinking of how amazing it would be to have real experiences like that. And it would be. Also the fish cruelty I didn't really care for.
The King's Beard (2002)
a good one
A great movie. Found this movie on late at night and decided to watch it. I was nicely surprised for once. It's good to see some depth in ideas and symbols being used in a children's movie. They always seem to be a lot more interesting in this context, more light-hearted and full. It seems that the fairy-tale still is fascinating to any age of mind. It would be nice to see an adult film that could lend itself to a source similar to this but it tends to be the case that attempts are a bit lacking in meaning towards any genuine feeling. The animation is not extremely interesting but is not at all distracting; back round is cool but the characters are simple. Everything, including characters, is well thought through and the whole feeling thats set in motion is happy; not Disney happy (good). Some parts are brilliant. I'll definitely be finding a copy of the film for my niece. I wouldn't mind watching it again either. A pleasant surprise for a late night movie watching and doubly great for being a cartoon, always good to see animation.
