Mea Culpa (2024)

A dope soundtrack does not a good movie make
25 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Of late, I'm seeing too many Black movies that rely far too heavily on overly gratuitous sex scenes and digging through the musical crates instead of taking the time to write thoughtful storylines with well developed characters.

I said what I said!

Curiously, all of these films keep getting churned out by Netflix.

That said, does anyone else feel like this was a VERY close version of TP's "Confessions of a Marriage Counselor?"

Where to start... 1. There was no chemistry between the lead characters. Both very attractive people, but their characters were stiffer than the canvas he was painting on.

2. Along those lines, I'm undecided with whether Kelly Rowland is a terrible actress or was she just given very bad material? I'm willing to give Kelly another chance with a different director and material but THIS was awful. So far, neither of the Destiny's Child girls are turning out to be cut out for film. YES that includes Beyonce. Undeniable beauty does not equate to watchable acting talent.

3. I couldn't see half the movie because it was too DARK! And the colors were off with the faces and the night scenes were poorly lit. It seemed like an overly intense filter of some sort. Very off-putting.

4. I still don't understand why Mia's husband had a backstory when he didn't have a fully developed character?? Make it makes sense.

5. And don't get me started on Mexico versus the Dominican Republic. Again, so much of this made absolutely no sense at all! That's not a plot twist, that's just very sloppy writing.

6. The only bright spot to me was the cameo from Veronica (Haves and Have Nots). It would have been better to develop her storyline than the mother's.

Really surprised at how bad this one was.

George & Tammy (2022–2023)

Epic!
18 March 2023
I wasn't sure what to expect when I saw that George and Tammy was actually a mini series. I've seen too many stories dragged out in sequential shows on streaming services that really should have exercised better editing to create a really great 2 hour movie.

That said, Georgia and Tammy is NOT in that category! Every single episode stands strongly on its own, showing the evolution of a wild country love story. You feel the joy and the pain of these people who really seemed to love each other, even if they weren't good for each other.

While we talk a lot about Jessica Chastain because she is a remarkably brilliant actress, the actor who plays George, Michael Shannon, deserves his due as well. He's loving and protective but deeply troubled inside.

Finally, this is one of those rare musical biopics where the storyline matches the awesome music. These two were magic together, even as they went down in flames. If you love great music AND great storytelling, this is tops!

Mildly entertaining but questionable messages
11 March 2023
Like most, I tuned in to watch because of the caliber of leading actors including Kerry Washington and Delroy Lindo. I so wanted to like this, but after binge watching all episodes, I was left wondering what the point of it all was. Unfortunately, the storytelling does not live up to the hype. The main character is a middle aged, social media obsessed therapist who like many in her profession, has a wreck of a personal life of her own. Kerry Washington is a really good actress with the right content. In this show, she comes across as a very childish graying woman who can't figure out what she wants to be when she grows up. Of course, the storyline tells us that's because she was in foster care and her father was in the criminal justice system. Those things can be true. But one must wonder if the character learned anything about herself while she was studying to become a therapist. The storylines are messy, including one around her love life. While the show makes light of her dating her father's parole officer, there's nothing advisable about that. It's predatory no matter how handsome he is. In the real world, that situation could be easily, and dangerously manipulated or even weaponized by the parole officer against her father in the event things didn't work out. There are also some interesting messages about the criminal justice system, indeed, sometimes they are literally post-its on screen. There's no doubt that this show was written with a particular message that it wanted to share. It's unfortunate that there wasn't a better caliber of storytelling to make us really care about that story and who these characters were as people. I left indifferent. One thing in particular that truly bothered me was her inner child, played by a very young black female actress. It was offensive to have that little girl cursing that way. NOT cute or funny. The same story could have been told without this child being the most profane on the show. I missed the "comedy" in this one. If there's a season 2, hopefully someone else will write it and helm it.

It's Complicated
6 March 2023
All in all, this was a decent documentary for someone who knows nothing about hip hop. The rest of us were probably a little deflated by the end.

First things first: This documentary couldn't decide if it wanted to cover rap or hip hop. I see wrap and hip hop as being close cousins but not synonymous. Mary J Blige and jodeci are hip hop. Chuck D and Snoop Dogg are rap. If you're going to try to cover both in the same documentary, you have to be respectful of these different art forms that are closely related but appreciably different music styles.

That said, the first installment was excellent. It contextualizes the birth of Hip Hop and its meaningfulness to a generation. Sadly, if we are truly honest, that first decade was probably when most of the true consciousness ended.

For me, things kind of goes off the rails particularly in the last two installments by trying to turn it into political commentary superficially cloaked in the rap culture. While I don't doubt Chuck Dee's sincerity, the truth of the matter is that corporate hip hop wasn't closely interwoven into Black Lives Matter or any other significant social justice movements in the last 10 years. They were truly on the sidelines, occasionally making token donations here and there but never really getting their hands dirty. It is what it is.

The documentary also fails to look at the whole picture of rap/hip hop, which includes wildly popular but consciously bankrupt rappers like Lil Wayne and others who have absolutely no political consciousness or concern about the broader Black populace. Some of them even supported Trump and his hateful rhetoric. No matter how toxic, they cannot be ignored. They SHOULD not be ignored.

It's also largely silent on the hip hop of the 2000s when Kanye, 50 cent and others ruled. That is a disservice if you truly want to brand this as a full homage.

One thing in particular I have a problem with is the dangerously revisionist, "harmless" view of drug and gang crime that ravaged Black communities in the '90s. There's no doubt that cocaine came from outside the Black community, however, there has to be personal accountability WITHIN the Black community for our response to it. There were many people who got sucked up in the drug trade but they were also many who did NOT. I also highly challenged statements such as the one Al Sharpton made about every Black person he knew had a family member in jail. That's because his circle apparently was very limited.

Drug dealers of ALL races were horrific enemies of humanity. And YES that includes Black drug dealers. These weren't good fathers and providers who were suddenly ripped from their family dinner tables. Half of them didn't even know they had kids in the world, and the other half that DID didn't give a damn. The truth hurts, but somebody needs to be the grown up in the room and start speaking it. That's the only way we face the darkness and turn the tide. Black drug dealers like all the rest trafficked children, raped Black girls and women and perpetrating every possible inhumanity known to man. They deserved to be under the jail with 3 strikes. It should have been TWO!

So, it's definitely a good introduction but one cannot walk away from this documentary thinking they have a solid grasp on hip hop, or the complexities of the political landscape of the '90s and early 2000s.

Just didn't feel the love anywhere in this one
15 February 2023
This one's really weird with a pretty predictable storyline. I think this is the first movie where the wronged party (the fiancee) literally provides the so-called heroine with ALL of the ammunition to use against her. Who does that?! While this one has shades of My Best Friend's Wedding, the big difference is that you really don't get invested in any of the characters because none of them are likeable. I just didn't feel the love with any part of this triangle. It was all overly contrived. It's also extremely uncomfortable how the fiance has told EVERYBODY in town her business in the short 6 months she's dated this guy and they're all passing it around like party favors on the eve of the wedding. Every time we see the ex-girlfriend stalking the couple like chewed up, spit out karmic gum on a shoe while pretending to be a videographer, it makes less and less sense. If the groom didn't get rid of her, the bride-to-be should have made it clear that she was NOT welcomed. Note to anyone confused: You should NOT be at your ex's wedding as a single. That's not about insecurity, it's about the energy especially when she looks like a thirsty stripper in every scene. Even a couple of so-called emotional scenes can't save this one. And why was the lesbian hint thrown in?? Too much stuff in the soup without enough quality ingredients. On the bright side, it is a little bit better than Shotgun Wedding. Not by much though.

Great cast. Abysmal screenplay.
12 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Stumbled on this movie today and I wanted to love it so much! I love Omari Hardwick, Sharon Leal, Gary Dourdan, Lynn Whitfield and all of the excellent members of this cast. But this is that cake with all of the premium ingredients that just does not come together. At all. So much made absolutely no sense. We get no insight into who the wife is, and more importantly, who she was before they married. I particularly do not like the "inevitability" of children who grow up in foster care becoming sociopaths. That is so wrong and inaccurate. And whatever was happening to her damn sure wasn't simply a sleeping disorder. The husband should have figured that out in the first 15 minutes of the movie. The fact that they stay together after he knows that she killed their child was the final straw. He got more angry about her mentioning their finances to her foster brother than he did her choking the life out of their child. Please make it make sense. Too many holes in the story to make sense of it all. I would expect something like this on Lifetime but I expected so much more with this level of actors.

Watch with a good muscle relaxant
5 February 2023
I don't think I have ever physically cringed as much as I did watching this film. And that's saying a lot because I've seen some stinkers over the years. This movie had all of the perfect ingredients to put a fresh spin on a romantic comedy. Instead, they left no stereotype of interracial dating unturned. It was stale, uncomfortable and extremely outdated. It's as if someone in the '70s wrote a mediocre film about interracial dating and tried to give it comedic edge. Not even Eddie Murphy could save this Titanic. For starters, Lauren London and Jonas Hill are capable actors. But they had about as much romantic chemistry between them as two houseplants. Even their romantic origin story just didn't make much sense. But the REAL pain comes in the clunky racism and bigotry of the families. Look, of course I know there are people out there who are not happy with interracial relationships, even today. But instead of putting in the serious work to really unpack things in a unique way, this just went to all of the highly predictable lowest common denominators. The militant Black dad, the casually racist white family. As a Black viewer, I am starving for intelligent Black films. I really wish Hollywood would stop giving all of the budget to people who write lazy screenplays like this.

Pleasantly entertaining with difficult messaging
4 February 2023
This is definitely an entertaining and closer to reality movie than you usually see on Lifetime. One of the first things to think about with this movie is what exactly IS the preacher's sin? As you watch the storyline unravel, there are a few. Most of the characters are pretty well drawn - most. But two of the most important characters are oddly flat I'm going to focus this review on the fumbling of the preachers biggest "sin" if that's what we want to call the miracle of life. On top of some family drama with his wife's niece who moves into the home after the tragic loss of her mother, the preacher finds out he fathered an adult son of his own before he got married. The two most vanilla characters in the entire movie are the two Black characters, the biracial son and his ailing Black mother. The son is uncomfortably forgiving, as is his mother. It gets even worse because the good pastor essentially denies the existence of his son while repeatedly pretending to be a great parent at home and telling the adult child he's there for him - as long as he knows his place as a secret. Even when the boy's mother dies, he doesn't clear time to stay with him through the grieving process. You have to wonder why if he and his wife had such a great relationship he didn't sit down and tell her the truth from the beginning. It's not like the son's a toddler. Was he worried that his wife would lose it because the child was Black, or that he had any child? He literally had to be blackmailed into standing up as a man and publicly admitting that he fathered a Black child. There was a lot to unpack there that frankly should have been at least half the focus of the film.

An excellent film regardless of producer
16 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Finally got around to watching a Jazz Man's Blues this weekend. What a beautiful, tragic story of love. While there was little doubt how the story would eventually end given the main characters and subject matter, it was still engaging and beautifully written.

I think we are beyond the days of dog-whistling Tyler Perry movies. I noticed the number of mainstream writers invoke his name as a way of discounting his work and growth as a writer and producer. It's also a not so subtle way of relegating his work to "Black audiences only." As someone who watches films across genres, this is definitely one of the top three for this year whether the producer was black, white, or another race. It stands on its own. That said, there were a few drawbacks, though none of them torpedoed the overall story. Does Leanne continue to pass? Was her mother white, or was she passing as well? Why wasn't her mother raising her in the first place? Does Leann leave her husband after he murders the love of her life? Does the lynch mob find her on the bus? Does Bayou's brother OD? There was at least another 30-45 minutes of story to be told. While I don't need every plot line wrapped in a neat bow, there were some significant questions at the end that I wish had been answered. Still, it was a very beautiful film with exceptional performances from every single player. Fun fact: Perry originally wanted Diana Ross to play Hattie. Everything worked out exactly as it should because Diana would not have been nearly as good as Ms Vann was in this film.

A necessary, hard truth that needed to be told
5 September 2022
Honk for Jesus is one of the absolute best films I have seen in years! The Pharisees and money changers are loosen their minds because it flips the wig on so much church hypocrisy and spiritual rot that is pushing many people away from churches today. Church folks are pissed! And that's okay! They'll be all right. What we all need to be mostly concerned about are predators like Lee Curtis and enablers like to Trinity. Sterling K Brown delivers an electric performance I didn't see coming! Regina Hall has ALWAYS been underrated and she knocks it out of the park as well. This is a must-see film because of both the acting and the screenplay. While many think it's based on a late pastor from Atlanta, it could easily be Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, Jamal Bryant, Creflo Dollar, Stephen Lentz, and so many many many others! Instead of getting angry about movies, folks need to stop worshiping humans and put their faith where it should be.

Interesting, but rambles quite a bit
16 July 2022
Sometimes it's hard to know where they want you to focus with this one. At times, it feels like it should have been titled "the case against Les Wexner" - and rightfully so based on what was presented. The body image claims about Victoria's Secret in all fairness could be made about virtually any swimsuit, lingerie or even fashion brand during their heyday. The current generation has brought fresh perspective to size, shape and inclusivity In the last 3 - 5 years. We can't revise history and lay all the blame of prior ills on one company. As a grown woman, I never looked to Victoria's Secret for framing my own opinion of myself, even though I liked their lingerie back in the day. Their shows were tongue and cheek at best but certainly not a 'to-be' model for me/my image. Like many streaming documentaries, this one probably could have been covered very well with one, 90 min well-edited episode that picked a lane in which to focus. Much of the content is regurgitated across episodes for shock value but little new ground is actually tread.

Dangerous revisionist history
10 July 2022
There were some very interesting points in this documentary, and there were certainly some irregularities with the trial, though none of the trial irregularities were smoking guns that swayed his and Larry Demery's clear involvement in James Jordan's murder. It's possible to have a bad police department and still have someone guilty as hell. Much of what he and his attorney want the viewers to believe is downright insulting. He knew exactly who James Jordan was either before they killed him or immediately afterwards - certainly by the time he robbed him of his jewelry which he then wore in that ridiculous homemade rap video. This is the problem I have with this moment in time of revisionist history where we are more focused on criminal rights than humanity toward victims and their families. There was absolutely no remorse shown in the several hours from Daniel Green, which I find remarkable in and of itself. If you are already that void of humanity by 18 years of age, you're already gone. Neither of these men should ever be released from jail because they would probably do it again. The only reason they're muddying the water now is to create reasonable doubt for both of them. That's what criminals do.

Excellent action flick!
5 June 2022
This movie was LIT! Angie Harmon is definitely in her element playing a hit woman turning over a new leaf. The writing is tight, with some excellent zingers that bring humor to the well woven storyline. There were similarities to Kill Bill, but "Buried in Barkstaw" really does stand on its own. I kept waiting to get bored, but it never happened with this one! I just wanted to see more. There were just enough dangling ends that the sequel should also be GREAT!

Women are not always victims
22 February 2022
"For my man" is an interesting show that has a revisionist history slant to it. Every episode consists of a woman who had absolutely NO idea that she was involved with a supervillain until she got arrested with him. She didn't notice the drugs, she didn't notice the guns, she didn't notice ALL of his assorted crimes, which usually include murder. She didn't notice ANYTHING! It really strains credibility and it's quite insulting to victims of crime.

Excellent true crime series
22 February 2022
Sense of the city is an excellent true crime series. It actually looks at many stories that either we haven't heard of before, or we've only heard general details and they provide a lot more clarity as to what really happened. I don't know who needs to hear this, but yes, Black people DO commit crimes like urrybody so YES, the crimes either include Black victims or perpetrators. But the depictions in no way are politically slanted against Black people.

A story that needed to be told
21 January 2022
Most of us know the 50 ft level story of Emmett Till. I am very thankful for this televised event that provided us with more intimate details as to what led up to his horrific death and the aftermath. While I am glad that this story has been told, a few things. It is way too long. At most, it should have been a 2 night event. And that's being generous. This is a powerful story that tells itself. The strumming violins and overwrought acting ironically diminishes its value. We all know tragically how the story ends. So we don't need the heavy-handedness of the directing and the music. What we needed was better editing and more nuanced storytelling. The most troubling part for me of all is Mamie Till herself. Adrienne Warren is a very good actress, but you can almost see her acting. She doesn't really inhabit the spirit of Mamie so much as she looks like a dressed up character. I hope some understand what I mean by that. If you don't, Angela Bassett and What's Love Got to Do with It. I was also deeply troubled that we never really saw her grieving before they jumped to showing the stereotypical strong Black woman who's always strategizing. It's important to show the humanity of Black women including our frailty when we experience extreme trauma and tragedy. It is almost unbelievable to think that a woman would look at her child's brutalize, mangled body and immediately start thinking strategy for the cause. I did not like that at all. If anything, they should have spent at least half a night focusing on her grief and remembrance of her child, not her immediate flip the switch to "the movement." All that said, I think it was still necessary and worthwhile to have this story told and I'm very glad to have been able to see it.

Second Chance Christmas (2014 TV Movie)

Blended Family Christmas
20 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A Second Chance Christmas is a faith-based holiday film, centering on the bond that has to be built between a new stepfather and a stepson with whom he previously has not had a close relationship. Thrown together by unexpected tragedy and loss, suddenly Malcolm, the stepfather, and Lawrence, his stepson, must learn how to navigate their grief while also deciding if they want to be a part of each other's lives. Especially right now with so many children having lost one or even both of their parents and being the thrust into similar situations with stepparents and relatives, this is a timely holiday film that definitely tug the heart strings. But also, hopefully it will make single parents think carefully about how they pick and integrate life partners when they have young children - ideally before the marriage. The film is well made and enjoyable. And certainly thought-provoking.

Hopefully, this is the swan song
10 December 2021
Hopefully after this, "and just like that" will give these well-deserving actresses a break. A permanent one from this franchise. As much as I loved the original show and still sometimes watch it during holidays on reruns, it was embarrassing watching the first 20 minutes of this reboot. It as if the characters have been cryogenically frozen depriving them of the maturation and growth that the rest of us have gone through over the time that the show ended. There's so much that's cringe-worthy in watching the show that it's not even fair to talk about it.

Harlem (2021– )

Excellent cast, great comedic timing
5 December 2021
I really like Harlem! It's nice to see professional Black women. I just wish it wasn't so copycat and formulaic. It's like a blend of Insecure meets SITC. I honestly would like to see more originality in our writing. Of course it's very sexy, chock full of beautiful people in all shades and of course there are a couple of gratuitous sex scenes. I just wish the colorism wasn't so strong. Typical with many Black shows, the actors and they're related storylines are typecast based on their skin tone. Light skin = close to white - wealthy and pure, and dark skin = unreliable, sex crazed and anything goes. Angie's character is particularly problematic for me, especially this one very uncomfortable segment where she goes looking for a mandingo. There's no other word to use for it so it is what it is. Also, the use of N word really needs to go. That's the reason I stopped watching Insecure and if the writing isn't any better with this show, I'm out! Shame on Amy Poehler for producing a show that doesn't have better quality writing than that. Black women of any age understand the harm of the N word and Beeatch and we have more class than that. Black women are dogs. At the same time, I have to say that I like most of the other characters, even if it does often feel like tinted SITC, just louder and more expressive. The comedic parts are really funny and even though it sometimes feels preachy with awkward product placement (eating Doritos in a white coat???), I'm still very excited about this show and it's potential. I've been watched the entire season today. And I look forward to S2.

Monogamy (2018– )

Black Mirror meets Relationship Drama
19 September 2021
What would you do to get a break from a relationship that's not working, but you're not quite ready to let go?

This show is better than anything I have seen on Netflix, HBO or any other premium channel in YEARS. The writing is phenomenal as it really keeps you guessing while each of the characters is fully developed and interesting. That is something that is truly rare these days. For those of us missing Netflix's Black Mirror, this definitely is a nice fix with a unique relationship angle. Don't want to give away any spoilers, so you have to watch it to see what I mean!

THIS is the level of writing I have been looking for in shows targeting Black audiences - smart, unexpected, creative, thought-provoking Black dramas that portray us as multi-dimensional, complex beings. Sexy and erotic without the soft porn ala Netflix that often fills in for poor and incomplete screenplays.

I highly recommend Monogamy to anyone who likes to be challenged to think!

Karen (I) (2021)

No trite stereotype untouched
14 September 2021
There are so many things to be said about Karen. First and foremost, I want my money back. Beyond that, I'm so tired of unimaginative movies marketed to Black audiences. We like well-written, high quality films too! This film is not exactly like Get Out, which is a good thing because I didn't think Get Out was a very good film either. Instead of a screenplay, with Karen we have something thrown together by someone that just browsed all of the "Karen" headlines and threw them together as a cheap film. It's unimaginative, uncreative and mostly boring because it's so embarrassingly amateurish and predictable. Stylish camera work can't compensate for that. We deserve a smart, well written film on modern racism. This ain't it. Instead of a script, you have a lot of heavy-handed preaching. Did I mention that it just didn't make sense?

Great cinematography, lacking storyline
28 August 2021
I really wanted to like this film! The cinematography is absolutely gorgeous, as are the characters! The wardrobe is to die for and they get everything right about the DC ambiance. Where it goes wrong is the actual storytelling itself. That seems to be a thing with many of the shows marketed to Black audiences on Netflix, unfortunately. The female lead isn't really developed at all in terms of us getting to know her character other than she's in school to be a lawyer. We knew predictably exactly where things were going to go with the boyfriend. I don't even need to share spoilers! It would have been nice to have a story that was unexpected and still uplifting. There were a number of ways that could have been done given this phenomenal lead and supporting cast. Maybe next time.

Family or Fiancé (2019– )
2/10
Poorly acted "reality" show
11 August 2021
Remember when the OWN network premiered with the promise of uplifting television for African Americans? Clearly that ship has sailed long ago. The crop of so-called reality shows on the network range from bland to outright ridiculous and potentially harmful. Family or Fiance takes the crown for foolishness. The first season wasn't so bad as at least some of the couples were reasonably realistic in terms of the issues they faced. The second season is so over the top that it's clear that the show is going more for ratings than reality. The couples are clearly there for the free trip and to be on TV, not to ever get married! No matter what the issues, everything always works out with a neat bow by the end of the episode. Then the postscript indicates that most of the couples predictably split up after the show's over. Like many others, the show had the potential to demonstrate how to deal with realistic family drama but it shows to go down the unbelievable route because it often manufactures drama that nobody believes in the first place. Another troubling factor is the way the show doles out pseudo-therapy on serious issues like domestic violence and parenting. I need you one seriously scratches her head at some of the troubling guidance that's given.

Andra Day gives a solid performance in a very poor screenplay
27 February 2021
Andra Day is very talented and she definitely has potential as an actress with the right director and screenplay. Her singing is excellent in the film - she hits every one of Billie Holiday's hauntingly earthy inflections. The problem is the film itself. It is very confusing with characters in and out who are not explained. We don't learn a lot of substance about Billie Holiday's life - at least anything verifiable - except what we already knew from Lady Sings the Blues. Perhaps my expectations were too high, no pun intended, but I expected this film to give audiences a more intimate picture of her life - her as a complex woman, not just a singing caricature with a heroin needle in her arm. Instead, this is another one of those biopics where the lead actor or actress does more character imitation than provide true insights into the actual subject and her life. This is also one of those films where the singing goes on far too long, but when that happens you know it's because the writing and screenplay are usually thin and the music is used to overcompensate for that. One of the most disturbing things for me is that the film shows a lot of men in and out of her life, and even tries to create romance out of a viciously violent relationship, her and Lewis McCabe. I need films to stop pretending that Black women love to have their asses stomped by the men in their lives. That's NOT love so don't sugar coat it on film. It's even worse that this is a very light complected woman who never has a single bruise on her face when we see her, even as he's constantly smacking and punching her. I think this film probably could have been a lot better with a different director and certainly with a much better screenplay.

I Care a Lot (2020)
7/10
Our society has devolved just enough for this to be uncomfortably realistic

I care a lot has all the ingredients for an absolutely fabulous flick! The first half of it had me glued!! The actors, the acting, the characters and even the despicable plot were superb. And then it just became so freaking unbelievable that it was insultingly stupid. An incompetent mobster with henchman that Wylie Coyote could have outsmarted.

The worst part of it is that we're supposed to cheer for two of the most despicable women ever. For people who care about the elderly, these women are the TRASH of trash. They are the nightmare of baby boomers. I was rooting for them to be killed in the most deliciously vicious manner - skinned with their throats cut. Instead, This flick tries to turn them into heroines. Oh HELL NO!!

At least the end is somewhat satisfying, though we should have gotten a double shot.
