The Monster (2016)
More direction than script but ... very good.
The Moster is a film that bases everything on the staging (fantastic) and the performances of the main actresses (impressive). So little to criticize. Quite the contrary. I love these movies: a minimal but visceral story with heart and intense and believable performances. Seriously, this is way better than the majors blockbusters. Congratulations to its creators for these 90 minutes of tension, entertainment and human realism.
Kill Command (2016)
VISUALLY BRIGHT BUT ... BORING
It's a shame. Kill Commnand (or Indentify, the title that appears as an original and that makes much more sense) is a visually brilliant British independent sci-fi film. I'd say even impressive. Unfortunately, the plot is very basic, and it is not compensated by the rhythm, but by the others. The duration is too late for what it counts. It is a delight to see the photography, the visual effects, how these are inserted into the film in a natural way (I dare say as much as the Nil Blonkamp movies and even the Michael Bay Transformers). But it lasts 99 minutes and has at least 15 minutes to spare.
Joker (2019)
Not perfect, but unique and marvelous.
Interesting reflection on madness. We do not really know if what happens is real or not and that is the merit of the film. Joaquin Phoenix is obviously spectacular. And the music is awesome. I do not speak of expectations, if not simply, of letting go and enjoying a unique film, not at all perfect, but that really delves you into the dark thoughts of a tormented character. Must see.
Alita: Battle Angel (2019)
Really fun and spectacular, but...
Alita is a really fun and entertaining movie, while spectacular. It has moments of pure cinema and spectacular music (from Junxie XL). It is a pity that, due to the idea of always the sequels and possible trilogies, it has such an open ending and does not focus on a specific topic. Being a manga divided into many volumes, the film seems to want to cover a lot of things, not focusing on any. And it lasts only two hours, because in the end everything goes much faster than it should. That does not take away the merits he has, which are many, especially the construction of Alita's character, and his wonderful mix of real with CGI, which is simply impressive. Too bad that the relative failure (or relative success) prevents us from seeing Alita 2. It will be again.
Erial (2018)
Attention, it is apparently an experimental film
Attention, it is apparently an experimental film
This is a really bizarre movie, with two characters, an absurd plot, a peculiar humor and a attempt of experimental cinema. It really achieves good moments and humor (the scenes of scientists) but in many moments the plot is not understood, and it seems to be deliberate. I suppose that the theme of "experimental cinema": that is not for everyone. I do not understand since I like horror movies and science fiction "normal", so you are advised. A very strange thing.
