The best movie I've seen this year
16 December 2001
We caught Thomas est amoureux at the Virginia Film Festival this year. As we left, my wife and I (who have seen a number of really good films this year) agreed that this was one of, if not the best, movie we'd seen in a long time. It tells the story of Thomas, a young agoraphobic, who has not left his house in eight years and who interacts solely through the internet videophone on his computer. Yes, it is told from his point of view, which is as claustrophobic and inhibiting as you would expect. However, I thought it was brilliant - by the end, I felt as cramped and limited as the protagonist. ****/****

Don't read any more... See this movie NOW!
12 December 2001
Take a generous helping of Cameron Crowe, Tom Cruise, and an English-speaking Penelope Cruz. Combine it with a great story. Now throw that concoction away and see the original story instead.

We rented this solely on the basis of the box blurb, without reading any other reviews. Ignore everyone who says it's like this movie or that, as they only serve to reveal aspects of the latter portions of the movie. Just go check out the movie, and decide for yourself if it's a crime/psychological thriller or something more bizarre. We enjoyed it so much, we rented "Thesis" a couple of nights later. Abre los ojos is definitely a must-see - especially if you haven't heard about all the plot.

Back around the circle to great
15 August 2001
I caught this movie on HBO late one night recently, after hearing about it for years as "that John Travolta movie about the boy in the bubble."

It was bad. No, it was awful. As someone suggested earlier, it's a wonder that MST3K never got a hold of it. But a funny thing happened on the way - the movie went around the circle of quality until it got to bad. It then kept going, getting worse and worse, until it made its way full circle back to great. I'll admit - Citizen Kane this ain't, but it's great for a really, really, bad movie.

Just for laughs, imagine Travolta in his Vinnie Barbarino voice saying "Heyyy... I'm in a bubble heah..."

It's too bad he couldn't have stayed in that bubble, sparing us the agony of Battleship Earth and the Look Who's Talking series.

An excellent surprise
24 July 2001
We went into this movie carte blanche and were both thrilled with the movie that developed. Steve Buscemi is one of my favorite actors and this was the role made for him. Thora Birch was captivating. This movie was excellent and far from the everyday Hollywood drivel.
