A mess from beginning to end.
5 June 2008
Warning: Spoilers
If anyone requires proof that Elijah Wood cannot act, they need to go no further than their local video store to rent this movie.

Admittedly, the young actor is not helped by the script, direction or indeed overwrought plot of this effort by Spanish cult director Álex de la Iglesia.

Oxford looks fantastic, Hurt plays himself (again) with aplomb, and there are a couple of nice cameos by Leonor Watling as Lorna and Anna Massey as Mrs. Eagleton, although the usually entertaining Jim Carter as Detective Petersen alas is set adrift by the stilted script and convoluted machinations of the plot. The accent of Burn Gormans brilliant but troubled Russian mathematician Podorov constantly distracts so much from his performance due to its awfulness, that I cannot say for certain whether I thought the performance itself as commendable or not.

The dénouement of this particular movie deserves a mention as being possibly one of the worst executions of the "twist within a twist" plot devices yet conceived on the big screen. Not only will you have guessed the ending, and many permutations of it, by the time it comes around, you just won't care.

This movie is about academic mathematicians, reputedly the worlds cleverest people, and a series of murders committed by one of them, but frankly, I think the guy who bags my groceries could have come up with a more convincing plan. (No, seriously, this guy is pretty scary...)

All in all, unless you have seen EVERYTHING else on the shelf, leave this one ON the shelf.

A passable story ruined by miscasting
8 February 2006
Rhys-Meyers is talentless. I have never seen such a wooden performance in my life. It's not often that Allen makes such a disastrous mistake. Hopefully we will not have to endure this actor again. Even the usually captivating Johansson is left drifting in this movie as she tries to act against a wooden plank. The story is passable, and the movie is somewhat redeemed by the twist and turns at the end and great performances from James Nesbitt and Ewan Bremner in the last 10 minutes of the movie. However the otherwise strong British cast is inexplicably under utilised. Great character actors such as John Fortune, Rupert Penry Jones and Penelope Wilton are reduced to bit parts with no redeeming dialogue. I am disappointed to say this about a movie by the Master, but my heartfelt advice would be to avoid this movie at all costs. 1/5

Why Spidey, Why?
5 August 2004
What was the purpose of this movie. Apart from leading into yet another sequel?

The plot was weak, fragmented and full of holes. The acting was woeful, even normally proficient actors such as Alfred Molina and Tobey Maguire cast adrift in a script apparently written by four yr old's.

The special effects were so obviously CGI, to hold the interest for about as long as that dancing spiderman .gif circulated on the internet a couple of years ago.

To anyone save the most diehard comic-book fans, AVOID!

Sellers at his very best....
4 November 2001
Imagine my surprise on a sleepless night when i came across this little gem. Sellers is at his most inventive in this lighthearted movie about a out of work Indian Actor accidentally invited to an A-list Hollywood Party. PC it is not, but then again it was the 60's and the term Politically Correct hadn't been thought of yet. Ignore the little annoyances and enjoy 90 minutes of side splitting laughter.

Farrell is a bright new star.
31 October 2001
Arguably one of Schumacher's best, Libatique's photography is masterful and Farrell is going to be a huge star. His presence is mesmerising. I believed ever word that come out of his mouth. The whole movie, I couldn't take my eyes off him. His accent is flawless, no-one would ever think he came from North Dublin, (A slight twinge when he swears, but the way Dubliner's swear that's not surprising!!) Mark my words, this guy is going to be HUGE,

The Secret Life of Us (2001 TV Movie)

Aussie 'This Life', but worse
13 August 2001
Unlike Mr Spedding I disagree that this is better than 'This Life', although very much in the same vein, and whilst 'The Secret Life of Us' is very entertaining, the first series of This Life was far and away superior to "The Secret Life of Us' The characters are well written and acted and the plot skips along well enough to keep you interested, but it lacks the element of surprise that 'This Life' had in every episode. Whilst Claudia Karvan is a very talented actress, the lack of Daniela Nardini is the main problem with comparing 'This Life' and 'The Secret Life of Us'.

Worth a visit if you have an hour free on a Monday night

Not Bad, but 45 mins toooooooo long!
7 June 2001
Incredible Action Scenes, Beautiful Cinematography, Very pretty girls and boys, I think its time for the the big budget summer movie. Unfortunately its also far too long, historically inaccurate at times, if you can stand the unbelieveably corny Doolitle (Alec Baldwin) then give it a go, but be warned, bring refreshments and a bored (sic) game to pass the time.

The Panel (1998–2007)
Funny, funny people.
23 May 2001
Unfortunately I cant get this back in Ireland and I so wish I could because it is consistently hilarious. A panel of comedians, and the Cream of Australian talent Rob Sitch, Tom Gleisner and Santo Cilauro, sit around and discuss the weekly news and media. These guys are responsible for the aussie movies The Castle, a masterpiece in human observation and honest humour, and the Dish a bigger budget heartwarming comedy about a rural community in Australia during the Apollo 11 moon landings in 1969.

These are talented, talented people.

This is what happens when straight people make a gay movie
31 March 2001
What an awful movie, I have never seen such utter tripe. i am not sure what it is that impressed me the least, the sub-standard plot, the awful acting (see Patrick Stewart) or the patronising way that Hollywood screenwriters treat gay characters. Save yourself 2 hours of your life and get Billy's Hollywood Screen kiss or Trick instead.
