Great Idea for Porno...
13 March 2007
I'm a bit of a 1970's and early 1980's gay porn hound. When I heard of two real-life brothers participating in an incestuous relation, I had to see this one. Kip Noll has curly blonde hair and is cute. Scott has straight black hair, and is adorable. Yes, there is open penetration in this one (THANKS, SUPREME COURT!) Scott does "bottom" a bit in this one. There are other actors in this one, but the main draw is to see brothers boning. It has distribution troubles because the music isn't properly licensed. Too bad, this is an excellent example of the genre. I'll give this 9 out of 10 for gay porno. If you're looking for movies with real writing, acting, or quality, maybe 3/10.

Not Great John Holmes, not Even Good Gay Porn
27 November 2006
I saw this piece of cinematic feces when it first came out. I read John was "challenged" in performing the gay sex scenes.

"Challenged" is a very nice word for it. Holmes has trouble maintaining an erection longer than five minutes. He engages in unprotected anal sex -- not very well at that -- four or five times. He appears to have trouble even showing any enthusiasm for the movie. He didn't need to do this one; John had over 350 porn classics to his name by the time he'd passed on, this was unneeded.

Despite the necessities of the script, Holmes is wearing a sultan's outfit. This was shot on an off day, awful, awful, awful.

Forget the "spoiler" warnings, there isn't anything to spoil.

Yet Another Second Banana Falls out of the Bunch
27 November 2006
Actually, I meant TWO second bananas, since James Finlayson has the title role. Snub Pollard, with an upside-down fu-manchu mustache, plays a father trying to put his unruly kids to bed. Finlayson plays Sandwich; jilted by "Priscilly" over John Alldone (Pollard).

You can tell the general quality of the movie by the character's names. A brief (Titled) dialog passage may suffice.

In a snow-covered landscape, some "indians" are teasing the pilgrims about lodging. "Are you going to build a log cabin?" They ask.

"Heck, no!! We're going' to the Biltmore!" the pilgrims respond. Anachronisms abound. Cars, twentieth-century money, even the "indians" costumes come in for fair play. This is what passed for comedy in the '20's. Shaw this isn't.

Harry Saves Small-Town America and Joan Crawford as Well
21 November 2006
Mack Sennett discovered Harry Langdon in the 19-teens, buying a film of his vaudeville act; he didn't know what to do with him. (My source for this is Frank Capra's THE NAME ABOVE THE TITLE) Capra and co-writers, Harry Edwards and Arthur Ripley helped draw Harry's character out in a series of Keystone shorts. After a couple years, Harry was offered a huge sum of money to move to First National. He took Capra, Edwards and Ripley with him to make features.

TRAMP, TRAMP, TRAMP, the first film from Harry and his First National contract, helps Capra and Co. flesh Harry's character out. In the shorts, he was a slapstick comic. Here, he's got a motive (save his dad's shoe company) by entering in a walking race; and taking their own sweet time Edwards (directing) and Capra and Ripley, have given Harry a female lead, played by Joan Crawford, who looks very sweet and innocent.

There are the requisite silent-comic situations, including placing the comic in danger at the top of a cliff. When Harry realizes Joan is looking at him, he goes through a series of "flirty" looks unused by any other comedian.

Harry Langdon's name isn't as well known as Chaplin, Keaton, or Arbuckle, but that's because those guys managed to last longer. He's worth a look-see if you like silent comedy, but he's a bit slower on the uptake than the "big three." TRAMP, TRAMP, TRAMP is a very funny movie from a very funny man who never realized what a gift he had.

Sennett Comedy Delivers What's Promised in the Title
16 November 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Mack Sennett made over 1,000 short and feature length comedies. His list of discoveries is legendary: Chaplin, Arbuckle, Gloria Swanson, Mabel Normand, Harry Langdon, and several others. In the '30's, he made shorts with Bing Crosby and W. C. Fields. Love, Speed and Thrills is a typical title from Keystone Studio in 1915, after Chaplin had left the studio for Essanay.

Ambrose (Mack Swain, who played Big Jim in Chaplin's The Gold Rush) sees Walrus (Chester Conklin, the barber's customer from Chaplin's The Great Dictator) get shot, and takes him home to recover. When Ambrose leaves, Walrus flirts with Ambrose's wife. The scene where Walrus winks at Ambrose's wife is hilarious even by 21st century standards. Ambrose catches Walrus flirting, and a chase ensues using trains, horses, cars and on foot, The Keystone Cops.

This is a very fast-paced one-reel comedy from Sennett, and co. The title delivers what's promised in this one.

If you can find it, look it over.

The Sawmill (1922)

Frenetic Slapstick Comedy from Larry Semon ( did he ever do anything else?)
16 November 2006
In the 'teens and '20's, Larry Semon was a second-echelon comedian primarily in two-reel comedies. His comedies, while expensively mounted and populated with good comic actors, never quite made the leap to Chaplin, Arbuckle or Keaton standards.

It was set in (naturally enough) a lumber camp. Larry plays the "rugged he-man type" usually portrayed by Wallace Beery or Jack Holt. Semon's physical bearing makes this an amusing target.

The Sawmill was a very expensive comedy to make, more than some Chaplin pictures, but it just doesn't make it as a great comedy. If you like Ben Turpin, Lloyd Hamilton, or Charley Bower (You may have to look these names up) you'll like Semon.
