Shakuntala Devi (2020)
What is this?
Shakuntala Devi is not a biopic. Sharukh khan once said i ll not be doing boipic after chak de, because everyone is going to make biopic in same format. And see in this century bollywood is making a biopic just with the same concept and pattern. Shakuntala Devi is shown in the movie in such as she want to prove something against the patriarchy. Every scene like tryin is to prove that thing. Really? She did everything in her life to prove that? And where is about the gay rights she fought for? It is a biopic of a mathematician. We want to see her journey more as a mathematician. Every biopic in bollywood is as same pattern, they are fighting with the society always. Watch Hollywood biopic like Man who knew infinity, Ramanujan is fighting with his inner conflict. Thats what makes the character more intriguing. Nothing to say. They made a movie on world renowned mathematian and there is nothing about mathematics.
Raat Akeli Hai (2020)
Not a copy of Knives Out. π
Good movies are those where you get engaged to its characters and when they act so well that you start feeling them. A good movie is always more about character development. If a movie have a great content but you can't get attached to the characters while watching, then the movie fails.
Raat akeli hai is an unofficial remake of Knives out. But the movie isn't just about copying Knives out. Its about experimenting the content and character. Developing them in such a way that it feels like its our country, we have seen such a thing. Then we start realising that its not only a murder mystery, its also about the dark secrets of a family and also a love between a two people from different part of the society.
The casting is the main positive point of this movie. Nawazuddin, radhika apte, Tigmanshu dhulia, swetha Tripathi... Nothing to say about them. They did great as usual. The family drama played by Nawazuddin and his mother is loveable.
Story is although a bit lengthy but still beautifully written. The slow build into a big finale is crafted with precision. The suspense is created and kept me guessing till the very end. The curtain raiser we had, I never saw it coming. The love story woven into a murder mystery may sound Bollywoodish but that doesn't derail the plot.
A great experiment with a murder mystery and we really should appreciate such story in bollywood. This 2hours and 30mins mystery show looks little long but it is a must watch movie..
Lootcase (2020)
Good movies comes with a simple storyline. π
A movie supposed to be released 2years earlier. Definitely it would be a hit. Really happy to watch a dark comedy with a intriguing storyline. Actually comedy movies are missing nowadays. What bollywood is making are just senseless comedies. But lootcase comes with a dark real and situational comedy. With a good performance.... Audience can really enjoy it.Its been more than a decade to hilarious comedies set in crime world like 'Welcome', 'Phir Hera Pheri' and 'Hera Pheri'. Lootcase isn't on that high level but certainly very much stable and better compared to recent comedies. The writing is possibly the best you will see in last couple years and the screenwriting too hits the high bar.
The plot is about a common man finding a bag loaded with 10crore cash, unaware of the gangwar and the minister involved in it. He takes the cash home and got involved in this jeopardy. Dialogues are on some level because of uniqueness they carry. Finally, bollywood gets plenty of jokes from the real life.
Kunal Khemu in lead role is definitely noticeable, convincing that it felt like no one else could have done it. His acting makes us feel about his feeling in that situation, while we also laugh. Rasika Duggal as his wife is decent and looks traditionally attractive. Vijay Raaz, Gajraj Rao, Ranvir Shorey and the supporting cast is hilariously awesome. Great with comic timing. Even the child artist has couple of hilarious dialogues.
Rajesh Krishnan as director proves his vision. It won't be an exaggeration to say that Lootcase would have lost its essence if Krishnan had not been there. If you are expecting a 2hours hilarious watch, then it definitely worth watching.
Breathe: Into the Shadows (2020)
Hats off Abhishek Bachchan and Amit Sadh..
Breathe Into the shadow. After the terrific performance of Madhaban in 1st season, I didn't expect Abhishek as the lead role in 2nd season. But as i started watching the show, his acting really made me believe that AB has a lot of potential to act in drama shows and movies.
The physical transformation of Amit Sadh is great, but the mental transformation from season1 to season2, thats noticeable. That level of acting and dedication, anybody can feel his mental condition throughout the series.
Nithya Menon as as a wife and a desparate mother, acted very well. When abha (Nithya Menon) lie to natasha, its clearly shown that she can lie about anything, even her marriage. But she can't lie about her daughter. Thats the thing making her to do things that she is not supposed to do. Pretty convincing. And how the relationship between the couple changes when they lost their daughter and then find a hope to get her back, thats noticable.
Hrishikesh Joshi and Srikanth Verma great wid their cominc timing. Top notch performance by every single cast.
The show is slow paced, it takes time to develop the story and the characters. Before episode 4, everything is about character development. But character development is the main issue. So it worked. Audience get connected to the characters and then the show take them to its mystery and they start thinking about the ultimate motive of the characters. And the mythology reference takes the audience to another level of mystery. I think thats how True Detective like shows are made. And glad that indian shows are referencing the mythology. It maybe sound bad to many people, but when watching the show it actually engage the audience. The intro comes after a shorts scene and the scene really makes the audience question about it. So no skipping of introπ.
The BGM intensifies the mystery. The screenplay is good as a webseries. Overall it maybe little slow and long, but the story really engage the audience. Must watch...
Bulbbul (2020)
Tripti Dimri and her smile..
First the cinematography is mind blowing. The location, color, costume, great set design creates a great visual experience.
The ensemble cast really did a great job. Rahul Bose and Avinash Tiwari they are brilliant. And most importantly Tripti Dimri and Paoli Dam... leaves great impression on the audience. Specially Tripti Dimri, after her Laila Majnu, she did a spectacular job. Her smile thats what explain a chudail(don't compare it with the storyline).
As the trailer shows it as a horror movie, but the movie is something like mystery crime, but its predictable, main drawback of the movie. Hope someone haven't watched the trailer before watching the movie. The story is dark, the secret of somewhat a society and its not everyone's cup of tea.
But still the story is fresh and it will engage the audience for 1hour and 34mins. Great effort by everyone related.π
Chintu Ka Birthday (2020)
Well Done AIB team.
Chintu ka birthday. Its not a easy to review a movie which is about an indian family trying to celebrate their son chintu's birthday, set on baghdad after the capture of saddam. Its makes you really uncomfortable while watching a family trying to celebrate a birthday on war torn iraq. As chintu say, "amrika wale uncle itnaa khus huye ki apne logo ko bulana bhul gaye". It really stays in your mind. Vinay pathak acting as a father trying to make everyone happy, looks so realistic.
There are some plot holes, but its a 90mins film, which gives you satisfaction of watching indian culture and hospitality and its greatness in a small house. Must watch movie.
Mathu Vadalara (2019)
What a movie i just watched..
MATHU VADALARA... What a mind blowing thriller movie. From its first shot it gives u hint but u ll not get it till the end. Every twist is real, nobody sees it coming.
Every characters in the movie proved how hilarious it can be with a well-crafted character. Apart from the gripping plot, the hilarious gags in the film are spot-on. Yesu is well-written and Satya outperformed it with ease.
The cinematography and the background music is so awesome and creative that it keeps u glued to the movie.
Director Ritesh Rana's Mathu Vadalara is a film that will leave you satisfied. Right from the first shot, the film sticks to the story without meandering. The director deserves appreciation for picking such a story for his debut and dealing with it like a pro. And the climax scene is another creative work of him and it makes u thing the whole plot of the movie at once.
Finally it is trustworthy to watch "Mathu Vadalara" by spending 2hr 08 min of your time and definitely you'll remember in your life.
Panchayat (2020)
A best series by tvf
Panchayat, tvf series, a satirical drama is really a well crafted piece of art. So this series deals with Abhishek Tripathi's (Jitendra Kumar) journey as a Panchayat Sahayak. A high ambitious freshly graduate ending up with a 10thousand job only to deal with the situation that the woman Pradhan, Manju Devi (a brilliant Neena Gupta), who he is supposed to report to is nowhere in the picture. Instead, her husband Brij Bhushan Dubey (an arresting Raghubir Yadav) is in charge of affairs.
Anyone related to rural life, will get totally invested and the setup seems very natural and not yet forced. The gradually evolving chemistry between the characters lays out in front of you a beautiful fabric of the society, where you see the vulnerability of a common man. The occasional emotional outburst, disappointment, standing up for the other fellow and that innate innocence of every character bring out a smile on your face.
Neena Gupta makes a small appearance, but her character stays reality of women's role in villages. Despite holding positions of power, they are forced to stay behind closed doors, cooking.
Vikas, played by chandan roy, who knows the limit of his ambitions but doesn't bat an eye while telling his boss to study, very well developed and acted.
Ever since i started watching tvf content its clear to me that TVF is the pioneer of content from Pitchers to Kota factory. Now Panchayat proves it again that a rural setup with a short storyline can aslo make audience fall in love with the well developed characters and entertain them......
Asur: Welcome to Your Dark Side (2020)
Asur Review
Watched Asur, psychological crime thriller is very intriguing and well crafted indian webseries i have seen in a while. Serial killing shows are not easy to make. It is not about the police finding the killer, but aslo about the audience totally getting invested in the chase between them.
Asur makes you think about the psychology of the killer. The show is full of great points like mix of murders and mythology and the gruesome and new techniques of murder are well thought and constructed (Reminds of True detective and The Mindhunter).
Mythology, psychology, murder, mystery, karma, redemption, revenge, good and evil are all packed into this show to make it rich.
Cinematography, background score, production design everything in the show is very realistic which makes it different from other crime thriller. I think its one of the first indian show where hacking and forensic science are shown very realistic. Actually its not only shown but well researched and creatively used.
Arshad Warsi was good but Barun Sobti did a great work. The helplessness in his eyes and the development of his character nd connection with others takes the show to a whole different level.
Last two episode is predictive but overall it is a brilliant show talking about the deep hindu mythology and its logic, with an interesting murder mystery. Must watch show
