Titanic (1997)
Great Watch.
This movie is great but it's not perfect. I think all directors are good at their certain thing. Cameron is good for big sets, camera angles, story development and cinematography. But he lacks in character development and dialogue.
This move was all around a great watch and it sparks interests in history. I just got through watching a few hours ago and still feel mesmerized but it. Sounds weird coming from a guy but Cameron knows how to strike a nerve. I can see why a lot of people think it's a 10/10. I myself feel like giving it that just for the feeling I have right now but I know it's far from deserved.
The movie starts out with a team of explorers searching the sunken ship of Titanic. They find a safe and think they hit the jackpot. Their search was for a necklace but all they found were old drawings. But after cleaning them, they realize that the lady in the drawings is wearing the necklace they've been searching for. So, they show the drawing on the news and the lady in the drawing comes forward.
Now, this is where the story actually starts. Rose (the lady in the drawing) is from a rich family. Well, you find out later that they're broke and using their good name to get by. But anyways, Rose feels empty inside. I guess I can understand how she feels. Her mother is pressuring her to marry some guy just for his money. She basically has to convince herself that she loves him but she really doesn't. Now, Jack (the guy who Rose ends up falling for) is a poor guy who only got tickets to Titanic on a "lucky hand at poker".
So, we all know the story. Rose feeling empty, tries to kill herself but Jack convinces her not to. This is where the movie turned into a clichéd. The plot was executed very well but we've all seen the story before. Jack gets invited to a dinner party with Rose and her rich friends, where he acts like a fool. So, her fiancé and mom forbid her from seeing Jack. But you can't stop true love can you? I also said the dialogue wasn't good. Well, other than the clichéd love mumbo jumbo, the lines didn't fit the times. Yes, I know it's a fictional story fit into a real event but it's still a real event and you have to treat it like that. I would think people wouldn't be saying, "Yee Haw" in the 1900's. There's a lot of dialogue that just doesn't fit the times.
But does that make it a bad movie? Not at all. This movie makes you forget about all the Hollywood clichés and concentrate on the subject at hand. Titanic is a great all around film and for being three hours long, it didn't feel that long. It actually needed three hours to get the full story out. But the movie makes you feel sad and scared. It makes you feel happy for Rose and Jack, (why can't someone love me like that) and it puts you at the edge of your seat. The transitions are great to, no choppy directing work. James Cameron always delivers.
So, overall, I give this movie an 8/10. It wasn't a masterpiece, but it's a great flick for anyone to watch.
The Wicker Man (1973)
Classic.
I didn't expect much out of this film considering the plot. But I gave it a chance and it really took me by surprise. It almost makes you feel at ease while watching it. The atmosphere really catches you and pulls you in. The acting wasn't bad either.
The movie is about Sergent Howie; played by Edward Woodward coming to a place called Summerisle looking for a missing girl. But what's strange is no one has ever seen or heard of the girl. Well, Howie eventually finds out they're lying and when he finds out the real truth; he can't except it. The movie is like a goose chase all the way to the end. Well, anyways, Lord Summerisle; played by Christopher Lee tells Howie of the town's religion. How they think when one dies; they come back as something else. But Howie can't except that, since he is a really Christian man.
Howie starts doing some detective work and is able to find out that the girl that was missing was still alive and is led to believe that she is going to be a sacrifice since the town didn't have a good harvest last year.
This is great movie and though I seen the ending coming; it still took me by surprise. Like I said before, how peaceful the people are; it makes you want to visit.
I give this movie an 8/10 for great visual/audio.
Pineapple Express (2008)
Average Stoner Flick.
Being a fan of "Freaks and Geeks"; I thought it was a dream come true when I heard that former cast members Seth Rogen and James Franco were acting together in a movie. But I would soon find out how wrong I was. I didn't really know much about this movie. Just that everyone's been talking about it. But, I learned not to get excited over a movie because of the hype it gets. That's really what you have to do in this case.
Anyways, let me get down to it. Dale Denton played by Seth Rogen has a job where he gives supena's to people. I forgot the name of the job. But knowing it is essential to the story. Well, he goes to give a supena to this guy and witnesses the guy get murdered. He panics, throws his roach (marijuana) out and flees the scene. Now, some things that bugged me about this were: the location. The killers, weren't disguised and the area was residential. I forgot to mention that one of the killers runs a drug ring where he sells marijuana. So, this is a pretty big guy. Who in their right mind would kill someone where they could easily be seen? Well, anyways, Dale goes to his dealers house, Saul played by James Franco. I like to mention that his character reminded me a lot of Brad Pitt's character from True Romance. Well, anyway they find out that the marijuana that Dale threw out earlier was rare and Saul was the only one who had it. So, thinking that the killers would trace it back to them, they fled to the woods. The whole movie is one adventure after another and even though the story is rehashed and clichéd; it had it's moments.
Just don't go in with high exceptions. It's a stoner film. There's not a whole lot you can do with a story about two potheads. We pretty much scene everything from best, "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" to worst, "Biodome". I just don't see why people still think something's missed in the genre.
I give it a 5/10 for having some originality.
Saving Private Ryan (1998)
Really makes you appreciate.
To tell you the truth; I didn't know much about WW2 other than what I read in books at school. But this film really puts you there. How they were able to take control of a beach wired to explode really makes you appreciate my freedom. I just thought I'd start with that.
Overall, this is an excellent movie. It really has a forties feel to it and it's really intense. From storming the beach in Normandy to the final battle. It's was good, but don't be fooled. The story itself; didn't actually happen. It was a fictional story mixed into a REAL event. We don't see this much. Titanic anybody? But the story worked.
The plot is about a Squad of eight people trying to find the last remaining "Ryan" who's three brothers died so they can send him home. There's a lot of good battle scenes along the way. It might not be good for the faint of heart. I read that they actually used real amputees for when people got their legs blown off. So, be warned.
Overall, I'd say this is a great film. Stephen Spielberg directing. Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, Paul Giamonti and Vin Diesel were in the mix. If you're into action, history or have a good heart; I suggest watching this. This film will break you down and make you feel for the people who put their lives down for your freedom.
I give it an 8/10.
American Psycho (2000)
Good for Drama/buildup,
I didn't really know what to expect while watching this movie. I figured on it being about a businessman who secretly kills people based on looking at the DVD cover. Well, I was right. But American Psycho was different than most horror movies. This one actually had character development. I suppose one could say it's a slasher film with a story.
Patrick Bateman is a business man who lives almost a perfect life. He eats healthy, works out and keeps up with his apartment. But there's something that controls him. His urge to kill. It was never said why he killed but with the narration and Christian Bale's facial reactions; I believe it's up for you to judge.
This movie is good for some quotes. It also has great acting and story. The deaths weren't all to predictable. But you pretty much knew who was next. The ending also leaves you questioning. But I'm sure you'll figure it out after several viewings.
I give it a 7/10.
The Strangers (2008)
Scariest film ever made? I think not.
What are people talking about? Scariest film ever made? I seen EVERYTHING coming. You must have never seen any of the Friday the 13ths. They basically had the same plot just instead of Jason, you have strangers. I actually think the Friday the 13ths took more thought and had better scenes than this film did. I mean, the whole movie was about putting this couple through hell until the buildup and then there should have been a better ending. But no, all this buildup just to show them tied up and stabbed. It didn't even show that. What was the writer of this crap thinking? This film could have become another Texas Chainsaw Massacre if it had a better story behind it. But instead, it's a piece of crap.
Halloween (2007)
Worth watching once.
Well, with this film still fresh in my mind, I've decided to make it my first review.
I just got through watching it and didn't love it or hate it. I like the fact that there was more background info on Michael than the original had. But there were some things I think they could have done better. I think that they should have picked a better young Michael. This kid is a good actor but come on, killer? No. Also, they could have surprised me more, all the deaths were to predictable and somewhat corny. The only death I didn't see coming was the murder of Laurie's foster parents. But everything else was to predictable. Also, I think they should have hid the fact that Michael's suppose to be invincible from people who've never seen the original. But instead they give it a way when he first gets shot by the cop. Some stuff, I expected, as in all the gore, thats basically Rob Zombies trademark though so I had to expect that. This film was okay, it's not going to scare the bejeebus out of you but it's worth seeing once. It will never top the original by any means though.
Superbad (2007)
You can like this film all you want but as far as I'm concerned, it was Super BAD.
This is going to sound more like a script for a video but that kid of what I 'm looking for.
Well, there were a lot of things i disliked about this film. To make a start, I didn't like seeing the same stereotypical characters; Seth was the macho try-to-be badass, Even was the play-it-safe type character and Mcloven was just a nerd who tried to to take chances but always was to nervous to succeed. The only plot I seen in the film was to get beer for a party and the adventures three guys can get into to just get beer; I believe I've seen this on Saved by the Bell once. The jokes were really mundane, other than hear Seth say "fuck" about a million times over, there were only a few other jokes. Let me name a few, kid who draws penises, girl has period on guys leg, macho cops (what are we ten?) There was also a relationship between the two main characters that seemed like a direct rip from Clerks 2. Okay, I'm done. You can like this film all you want but as far as I'm concerned, it was Super BAD.
Mind of Mencia (2005)
I can't watch Comedy Central anymore
Thats right I can't watch Comedy Central anymore just because I can't bear to watch the repeated commercials for this show. I'll tell you the truth, this is a terrible show not because I'm offended by it, but because Carlos Mencia is one of the worst comedians I have ever seen. I rather watch Carrot Top do a George Bush impression than watch this no-skill hack. And to believe he calls himself the greatest. Even if he didn't steal the jokes, he is still bad at telling them, he's way off-timing and unoriginal. I remember in one joke he said "Why do white people go camping? to pretend there poor for a week?" Now what is that suppose to mean? That all white people are rich? Another one I didn't understand was when he did a skit of the Price is Right and he told some fat guy "You should know how much a fridge cost, you're fat" and the fat guy had the saddest look on his face. But what does that mean? That "fat people" are always looking for refrigerators? Those are just the two I seen in his commercials, God knows what his show is like..
This show falls in the likes of Epic Movie and Date Movie..
The Sarah Silverman Program. (2007)
Good show if you lack a brain
I wouldn't be so quick to look at all the good reviews and say this might be a good show..This show is only good if you don't know what "talent" is..I won't even say how offensive it is (I know it can be offensive to a lot of people) because thats not really what bothers me about the show.. What bothers me is that people watch this and think it's funny..It makes me feel like our generation is getting to stupid and I'm actually scared that it will one day be run by people who watch this garbage..
Basically the plot is simple..it's about an offensive, self centered, spoiled women(Sarah Silvermen) getting through everyday life..
Thats it..Like that hasn't been done a million times..In fact almost every joke either has been done or is racist..
Sarah also likes to sing..I like her voice..thats it..not the lyrics..The lyrics are dreadful..which she likes to sing about a lot of things..
If you like to see a hot women put everyone else down and make them feel like crap while at the same time farting and saying crap about every race then this show is for you..
Spider-Man 3 (2007)
Good for the average, not good for a critic..
I went to the theater with high hopes for this film because it looked good in the trailer..But it wasn't what I expected..To me this movie was awful..If it wasn't for the great acting I would still be at the theater asking for a refund..
Okay..The point of the movie starts with Peter Parker A.K.A. Spiderman talking about himself as he always does at the beginning of the Spiderman movies..You see him and his girlfriend (Mary Jane)and it seems like everything is going great for them..Sounds like the normal average hero vrs. villain movie and thats what it is..Everyone knows Spidermans going to win..He's a hero, the good guy and they can't lose..but it doesn't work like that in the real world and it was kind of disappointing how Hollywood can't shed some light on that for this film..But that wasn't the most disappointing part..The worst part about this film is it's cheesiness..Are we led to believe that a meteor came from the sky and then some black stuff turns Spiderman full of revenge? I'm sorry but you lost me..then you have an escaped convict who is running from the cops and ends up in a test facility(in the middle of New York City) and turns into the sandman..If thats not cheesy enough for you think of the fact that he happened to of killed Peter Parkers Uncle..Wow are all the villains related to Spiderman? Then Peter Parker proved that a photographers photos are fake so he gets the blacks stuff from the meteor on him and turns into Venom..Wow think for a second.. You get fired from your job and now you must Kill? If the world was that bad then I wouldn't want to live..And the movies predictability is endless Just like knowing that Spidermans going to win..We know that hes going to win; we just want to know how he does it..and of coarse Sandman and Venum are going to join forces to stop Spiderman.. and of coarse Harry is going to forgive Spiderman and help him defeat the evil duo..It really is hard to see Topher Grace go from a wimpy little pothead to an evil villain..I guess thats why they tried to dye his hair..
and thats about it for the movie..it's just 2 and a half hours stretched out..For an average person that doesn't watch many movies and doesn't know what to look for would think this is awesome but for a natural movie goer/critic this is something I'd stay away from...
I give it 3 stars for acting..
