Pottersville (2017)
A strange Christmas movie with an unlikely lead actor!
"Pottersville" was something that I never expected to see someone like Michael Shannon to be the lead of since he's known for being this intense and brooding but very great actor and its plot involving a subculture like "furries" was something I'd never expected to be part of the plot of a Christmas movie but here we are...Michael Shannon in a Christmas movie involving furries. It's a strange and unusual duck of a movie and I am recommending it on the grounds that it IS strange and unusual and it is an unexpected Xmas movie. For anyone watching this for the first time, expect the unexpected!!!
Men, Women & Children (2014)
I wanted to like the film but the movie itself made it impossible!
I was a fan of Jason Reitman's previous film "Juno" when I first saw it on DVD (I still haven't gotten around to "Thank You For Smoking" though). However, the appreciation for his work is on shaky ground for me at this time due to "Young Adult" and "Labor Day" (both of which are not Reitman's finest hours) and it's gotten to a point where I can't watch his films anymore and "Men, Women and Children" is a prime example of that reasoning. Its "anti-technology"/"anti-social media" logic is handed far too heavy for its nearly 2-hour runtime, it's characters have too much going on that, by the time it's over, it becomes overwhelming (and not in the best way). That's not to say that actors who are in this film aren't good. Adam Sandler is surprisingly well but the cast of up-and-comers (more notably Ansel Elgort & Kaitlyn Dever) are what keeps the film watchable, in spite of everything. Young Hollywood cast aside, "Men, Women and Children" is the kind of movie watching experience that I never, ever want to live through for a very long time. Do yourself a favor and just go watch Jason Reitman's first three directorial efforts and keep as far away from his latest misfire.
Stretch (2014)
The zaniest ride I ever went on, hands down!
The past few years, Joe Carnahan has done some versatile films, from character-driven crime dramas like "NARC" to more mainstream Hollywood movies like "The A-Team" to ensemble films like "Smokin' Aces". Here, he brings the same energy he injected into "Smokin' Aces" and turns it up to infinity with this zany, off-the-wall action-comedy-thriller that doesn't catch its breath for a second. I had fun with this movie. It's darkly hilarious (I like dark comedy when it's done right) and well-acted (with Patrick Wildon, Ed Helms & a deranged Chris Pine being the MVPs). This is one of the latest films to be produced under Jason Blum's Blumhouse Tilt banner. I'm crossing my fingers that he makes more films of this variety. Same goes for Carnahan, whose work I already enjoy anyway. Fantastic story, incredibly frenetic, supreme entertainment I didn't want to end.
