The 13th Floor (1988)
Could have been great, ended up so-so
'The 13th Floor' is one of those movies that a lot more could have been done to improve it. It does drag on in a couple of spots, but there is some development going on. I found the ironic twist that the girl of a mobster, now many years later, finds herself using the very same floor where she witnessed the execution of a young boy a nice touch.
Still, the supernatural elements needed the most attention, and a couple of simple things could have improved it overall.
The acting, with the exception of the girl and her best friend, falls flat. However, the daughter of said mobster finding her friend dead of an overdose was easily the best executed and acted I've seen in a lot of movies. Her grief and sorrow seemed especially realistic.
If your looking for a simple return-from-the-grave revenge story, and find this somewhere for cheap, pick it up. It doesn't have a lot of replay potential, but in spots (like the drug-overdose) will probably stick with you for awhile.
Lady in the Water (2006)
An awesome fantasy, whether your a child or adult.
This movie, as another reviewer has pointed out, is excellent if you go into it expecting it to be a child's bedtime story. In that regard, it exceeds expectations. Plenty of tongue-in-cheek moments (The best would have to be the film critic's fate :P ) Many have commented on the plot as being absurd or unbelievable. To this, i would ask the question: Just how absurd are many of the fairy tales you heard as a child? This movie brings out what we see little of in Hollywood: Imagination on the part of the watcher. The movie, to the right kind of person, leave's you wondering about much that you weren't told. What of Story's 'Blue World'? What of the writer? The film does an excellent job of calling to the fantasy-you-would-love-to-believe part of you.
In closing, I would hope that this kind of movie catches on.
Tatakae! Iczer-1 (1985)
The best!
This is one of my favorite movies ever!
Now, I'm not such a big anime fan, but the compelling story is a masterpiece in and of itself. I think what a lot of anime fans don't like or seems to ordinary about the film is due to the fact that it was one of the first to be translated to English. As such, a lot of the elements in the movie are seen in other anime. The plot is something that would give Lovecraft nightmares (A lot of the bioweapon beasts are an homage to Lovecraft,IMHO)
The suspense and horror are nicely accentuated by the musical score.
But of course, I'm highly biased. I've dedicated my entire back, in the form of a tattoo, to this series :P
Trapped (1989)
Very Interesting
First, Let me clear up a misconception left by a previous reviewer:
THIS MOVIE IS NOT 'DIE HARD' AND DOES NOT TRY TO BE!
That being said, Its remarkably similar to 'The Face of Fear', Except for in the beginning, she's alone. Trapped carries suspense very well. The acting, while not the best, does well to put you in the movie. Its very easy to see yourself, almost alone, running though a labyrinth of corridors and doors trying to find a way out. One of the things that 'Trapped' does better then 'The face of Fear' is use dead-quiet scenes to convey the vast and oppressive building itself. Indeed, the building seems to have a character of its own, aiding the madman on his rampage.
The madman, whom its almost possible to sympathize with, says little thought the film, adding to the creepiness. Not quite my best suspense film of all time, but quite good. The male hero is almost an anti-hero when we learn that he's in the building doing espionage.
All in all, a well done movie that deserves recognition.
