Avatar (2009)
$300 Million + , multi-Disney movie Remake
Interesting that the recommendations along with this movie are: Aliens, Alien Resurrection, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, Transformers (Cartoon), and Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. Those movies have so much more depth, story, and character that Avatar could only dream of. Look folks, watch Fern Gully the Last Rainforrest and safe yourself an hour and a half. This is Exactly the same thing. Cameron spent $300 Million dollars or more on the technology of the film and $20 (the price for buying or renting Fern Gully and Pocohantas) on the story. Thank God this didn't win Best Picture. The effects are amazing, but thats it.
The Hurt Locker (2008)
A lot of Morons on IMDb
Only simpletons and ultra sensitive types are giving this movie bad reviews. I am embarrassed to be apart of the same network as these morons. These are probably the same people that loved Avatard or G.I. Shmoe, or Transgenders 2: Revenge of the Michael Bay. If you don't get a movie, or don't understand what the message is, keep your damn mouth shut. You obviously don't have the brains for this type of movie.
I don't need to provide a synopsis or give a specific review on "The Hurt Locker." But, I do suggest you keep your brain on while you watch the movie and realize the movie isn't a documentation of a specific event or unit or person. It is a representation of the bigger picture. Everything is symbolic, not specific.
Akage (1969)
Perfect Blend of Comedy, Drama, Samurai Action and more...
I must agree with another review of this movie in that it is one of the best Samurai Films in America. I consider myself now a long time veteran of Samurai movies, and I own more than thirty of this genre. Red Lion has a perfect blend of quick-witted comedy, physical comedy, heart-wrenching drama, and in your face action. I have not seen a samurai movie yet to have such great humor and yet leave room to tear up at the end. This movie is not just for lovers of Samurai films, it is for everyone. There is a lot of violence and I don't recommend it as a family movie but if you love film, DO NOT MISS THIS MOVIE. You will laugh, you will cry, you will be at the edge of your seat, and you will be cheering "It's Alright! It's Alright! Forget it!"
M - Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder (1931)
One of the Greatest films of all Time
Fritz Lang's 1931 masterpiece M was the first psychological thriller of the cinema. Based on the real crimes of the "Monster of Dusseldorf" Peter Kurten who was put the death the year this film was released. According to crime historians Kurten is one of the most evil, depraved and disgusting criminals of all time. The character played by Peter Lorre, Hans Beckert was portrayed as a more sympathetic person. One of the details about this film that makes it unique even among todays thrillers is that the movie is more about the actions and reactions made by society rather than delving into the lifestyle of the serial killer like "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer". In pure cinematic ingenuity Lang smoothly cuts back and forth between the police and the criminal underground as they both strive for the same ultimate goal, find the killer. One of the many thrilling things about this film is as an audience member you are on edge about Beckert killing another child as well as wanting to know if it will be the police who capture Beckert or the criminal underground, plus what will either side do once they capture him. Another part of Lang's brilliant film-making is that he does not make it mellow dramatic. This was still the beginning of the sound era and many film makers through out the world thought that there should never be silence on the screen. Showing how far ahead he was of his time he took the opportunity to go without music and simply let the streets and crowds play as the soundtrack. This film is one of a kind and not only should every film fanatic own this film but anyone who is a fan of the art form.
Irréversible (2002)
Most Disturing Film I Have Ever seen
Is the Film good? Yes. Is it effective? Yes. Is it stylistically unique? Yes. However, this is the most disturbing film I have ever seen. This film of course contains the most brutal rape scene in the history of world cinema. The scene goes on for what feels like 10 to 15 minutes and leaves you breathless, stunned, scared, and sick. Monica Bellucci is one of the most beautiful women in the world and to see her violated like this makes it that much more disturbing. Not only does she get raped anally but she gets the crap beat out of her after the act. This happens somewhere in the middle of the film. Just like Memento this film is done completely backwards. At the Beginning of the film, which is actually the end of the story. Takes the viewer on a disturbing tour of an underground gay asylum. This was particularly disturbing for the fact that Noe did not shy away from male genitalia, phallacio, male masturbation or anal sex. This is followed by a scene where Vincent Cassal fights with a man that he thinks is the man responsible for his wife's rape. We see his arm get broken, when suddenly Vincent's friend knocks the man with a fire extinguisher until the man's head is nothing but a bloody pulp. Definitely not for everyone and consider yourself warned.
Batoru rowaiaru (2000)
'Lord of the Flies' meets 'Running Man' meets 'City of God' with Japanese Style = One Crazy Movie
The title I gave this review is not 100% accurate to explain what the movie is like, but it come pretty darn close.
The movie starts out by showing the lives of a few high school kids who are also our main characters and what their lives are like outside of school. Then they are on a school bus on their way to school when suddenly they all pass out for the exception of Kanahara, some mean lady knocks him over the head. Finally the kids that are on the one school bus is brought to a class room where it is explained to them that for three days they all stand on their own and must kill one another to win the game of Battle Royal. They are given Bread, water and a weapon. The weapons are suppose to be random and everyone for the most part receives something different. They must fight for their lives against all students but there are a few that choose to team up and fight the corrupt adults.
It does rank high on the Originality meter as well as the boldness meter. However, this movie is definitely not for your average movie watcher or movie fanatic. The film is full of disturbing content. The film contains very strong violence and gore all involving teenage kids. Some kill out of desperation but there are a few that seem to genuinely enjoy decapitating or killing a fellow student with a machine gun. The way in which the kills are done could be considered a little humorous in a deranged dark way. Another way to describe the movie is a teen-aged social satire.
For you big film fans out there make sure you watch this movie if it is ever available to you. But chances are you won't find it.
