Little Dixie (2023)
A reasonably decent action flick.
Action as a genre has a disadvantage that there is nothing really left to show which the audience has not seen before. The plot is familiar, though it does not bother to elaborate on the sub-plots which in my opinion helps the movie. The editing is descent and none of the scenes are too long and the dialogues are kept at bare minimum doing justice to the genre. I could not find fault with the performance of Frank Grillo, given the character he is supposed to portray in the movie, which he does convincingly. It does not deserve a very low rating in my opinion. Definitely an enjoyable movie if one does not have too high expectations!
Detachment (2011)
The modern version of To Sir with Love!
This is quite a dark movie with nuanced performances from all the actors. Adrien Brody has delivered a tight performance, alternating between morose, detached and displays of empathy. However, in my view, it was James Caan's portrayal of the witty but sarcastic teacher that stole the show. Worth a watch for Mr Caan's performance alone, even though his screen time is not substantial.
Brawl in Cell Block 99 (2017)
Raw and Potent!!
What a movie! The storyline is nothing exceptional but the execution is. All the actors have put in a decent performance and Vincent Vaughn was exceptional. Though I am not a fan of blood and gore, but the portrayal of a 'man pushed over the edge' felt quite realistic.
God Bless America (2011)
Why have a Civilization when we are no longer interested in being civilized
The protagonist sums up the entire movie with a single dialogue - "Why have a Civilization when we are no longer interested in being civilized".
Joel Murray is a fabulous actor ! Much better than his more famous sibling Bill Murray !
The Merry Gentleman (2008)
creativity at its best
As other reviews have pointed out, this is a movie which should be seen and experienced, instead of reading reviews and narratives about it.
This is one of the most enchanting and underrated movie that I have ever seen. It simply transcends movie-making to another level.
It is evident that Keaton is a sensitive director, and daring in the sense that he does not try to hide this fact.
The characters of the movie have depth. Breathtaking cinematography coupled with an amazing soundtrack makes this movie enjoyable. Where this movie stands out from the usual fare is that it does not try to build up a story or a narrative, instead the characters go with the flow with no attempt to explain any quirks along the way. Which is how life actually is!
Kudos to Keaton for bringing out such a wonderful film. I wish I could treat myself to this movie for the first time again.
