Kings of the Wood (2022– )

It's Play School
6 November 2022
It feels like I'm watching Play School. The people involved are like those ever so jolly characters in a children's program. Multicultural of course. And a woman wood carver who is made to look stronger than the men. They have the woodcraft studio in the woods. "Who's going to visit the woods today?" Urgh. And the visitors suddenly appear out of nowhere (they don't look like they've been hiking in the woods, more like they've parked at Tesco and walked over. Each visitor has a sad story and everyone does sad faces. "Oh that's a sad story". Background music is very folksy. They even draw super simplistic designs with chalk and crayons. I switched off before the silly dancing began.

What's funny about this show?
11 September 2022
No seriously, what is funny? It's a show about comedians but honestly, I didn't laugh once. There are all these "jokes" and everyone in the audience is laughing out loud and the other comedians are praising each other and there's lots of swearing and stories about sex and body parts and I'm just thinking, is this how dumbed down the world is now? I wanted to find it funny, I really did, but the comedy was cringey high school humour. I hung in there because I liked the premise, the window into a different lifestyle and seeing the clubs. The characters are pretty much unlikeable - just as they are on Seinfeld and I think that is what Crashing wants to be. But Seinfeld is original, funny, clever, observant. I reckon the characters would be better cast as teachers so there wouldn't be that expectation that when they stood up in front of a crowd they were going to be funny. Anyway, just a suggestion.

I still don't know
7 August 2022
I didn't like the first episode and I'd written a negative review but can't find it here. Did I post it and it was rejected? That's happened before to me on product reviews and I realised that's a good way to get your numbers up. Just accept a few crap reviews to make it look real and then include all the really positive reviews so the overall score is 9/10. Anyway, I've watched the first 4 episodes now and I do feel intrigued. This show ticks the box for originality and I did find myself thinking about situations beyond the show and relating to the protagonist, as I too often wonder what other people think and feel. But there are aspects of the show that seem ridiculous and over indulgent. I'll keep watching.

Writing while episode 3 is on.
28 July 2022
I'm writing while episode 3 is running because basically I'm bored with the show already. Yet another flashback is showing. So far this show is mostly flashbacks with a little bit of beginner camping thrown in. And by camping I mean yelling and swearing. Turning it off now.

More glass, less backstory
23 July 2022
The glass blowing is really interesting and I love seeing how the contestants will interpret the theme. But like every reality show now, the people are chosen not on merit but on representing "diversity". So much time is spent on personal backstories and repeating the same old scripts over and over, blah. Tell us about the glass. Show us how it's done. Pick the best glass blowers.

Best show since Westworld
26 June 2022
Original and fascinating sci fi that doesn't get bogged down in romance, social issues or political correctness. Well, so far. I'm up to series 1 episode 7. Why do I have to write 150 characters to give a review? I don't know.

Yawn. Same old story.
18 June 2022
So boring and gets political within the first 15 minutes. You get to hear how tough it is being beautiful, rich and living an outrageously privileged life. Apparently she had low self esteem, no confidence, was bullied, blah blah, blah. It's cliche after cliche.

Where am I?
4 January 2022
This is supposed to be modern day outback Australia but it was like it had been produced by someone who'd never even visited. A large hospital, an American diner, a Mexican cafe and phone reception in the middle of nowhere? I don't think so. And while it showed potential at the start, the movie quickly deteriorated, with the usual Aussie stereotypes appearing as co stars and extras. (Is there a movie where Australians aren't portrayed as friendly idiots?) Weird yellow lighting, plot holes the size of craters, unlikable characters... there were too many problems for it to be a good movie. It was just ok. I'll give it a 6.

Yawn
9 December 2021
And just like that... a show that was once funny and original turns into a boring, woke, cringey re-make. I must admit I couldn't even finish the first episode.

Fun but flawed
27 August 2021
With such a big budget you'd hope they could employ better writers but that seems to be the problem with most shows. The plot holes here are ridiculous and annoying. The lack of French culture and accents is disappointing. The frequent torture and sex scenes are unnecessary. But the costumes and settings are wonderful and it's interesting enough to keep watching.

More counselling, less montages

I enjoy this. It could be improved with less time spent showing stock footage of random people on the street.

One of the best shows
20 August 2021
I didn't want this series to end. It was intelligent, relevant and the acting superb. Rarely is dialogue so credible and at the same time, insightful. Each episode is a session with one of the characters so there is little action - this show is a quiet examination of people's stories.

PS How refreshing to see 'real' people on the screen, ie normal looking, instead of the usual Hollywood types.

Miserable
18 March 2021
Regret staying up to watch this - a miserable story it was with only one message - all white men are evil. Predictable plot, one dimensional characters but stars given for the scenery and music.

Blah blah blah
17 February 2021
So much unnecessary voice-over all through the footage. The narrator's voice is grating and the script is stupid. I can't watch anymore.

The original is better

Someone recommended I watch the original movie about Mister Rogers so I found that on a streaming service. It was far better.

Predictable
5 October 2020
In TV Land, all troubles are fixed with a thoughtful statement from the protagonist. It's that easy. So it is with The Principal. You have violent unruly students filled with hate? Just say a kind word and ta da, they'll change into caring individuals. Simplistic and one dimensional.

Watch episode 1 only and leave on a high note

Episode 2 couldn't be more boring. The humans are so dull you'll probably want the aliens to win.

So much potential so many flaws
10 May 2020
The police work is laughable, which is a shame as the production is quite good. There are so many times when we had to laugh at how ridiculous the plot was, how unlikely the events, the total lack of police and security in what is a major crime of global proportion. The oh so bad opening song gives you a taste of what's to come.
