Dog Gone (2023)
Good movie about a dog and his family
I recently watched "Rescued by Ruby" on Netflix, and I was recommended to watch "Dog Gone" next. It's a delightful family movie that revolves around a family's search for their lost dog. The movie introduces the family and their beloved pet Gonker. Although the plot was somewhat predictable, the charming cast and adorable canine characters made the movie engaging and enjoyable. However, I feel that the underlying message of the story, which is about how the situation brought the parent and child closer, could have been portrayed more strongly. Despite this minor drawback, I would still highly recommend "Dog Gone" to anyone who loves family movies with a touch of adventure and heartwarming moments.
Rescued by Ruby (2022)
Very enjoyable movie based on a true story
I watched this movie and it turned out to be a heartwarming family movie based on a true story. Uncertain of what to expect from the film, I initially viewed it solely due to a dog's appearance within the Netflix preview. However, once the film began, I found myself thoroughly engaged, eager to see the story through to the end. The casting was excellent and the actors did a great job in portraying their characters. The story revolves around a trooper and his struggle to achieve his dream. It was inspiring to see how he managed to overcome all the obstacles in his journey. The best moment for me was when I found out how he obtained Ruby and how things came full circle not only in the story but also for Bear the dog that played Ruby. I highly recommend this movie to everyone.
Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments (2016)
Good start, weak finish
I must confess that I have read the books, and I was eagerly anticipating the live adaptation as there was no sequel to the movie adaptation. The cast was perfect for their respective roles, and some new characters were a delightful surprise. The show started well with significant character development, and the storyline seemed to be on the right track. However, like most adaptations, there were some changes, but the show remained great until the final season. Unfortunately, Freeform (ABC) was planning to introduce a new show and cut back on this show and Baby Daddy. As a result, they rushed the last season, which was a major letdown to me. The characters did not receive proper closure, and the writing lacked the necessary substance to end the show on a high note. Despite its flaws, this series is worth watching - it's a must-watch for all fans of book adaptations.
Wednesday (2022)
Good show, however....
I honestly wasn't sure what to expect from this show. As a fan of the Addams Family, with Wednesday being one of my favorite characters, I decided to give it a try. The show delivered on what I was hoping for with regards to Wednesday herself, featuring a dark storyline and dramatic moments due to her character's antics. The cast was great, and there weren't many disappointments there. However, I did have some issues with certain aspects of the storyline, as it felt lacking in character development and didn't capture the essence of the original Addams Family characters. While there were some pleasant surprises, I'm still unsure how I feel about the show overall. If you're a die-hard fan of the Addams Family, it might be worth checking out, but be ready to overlook some of the shortcomings.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018)
Started strong, disappointing end
The first few episodes of the show completely hooked me. It was a fresh and different take on the Melissa Joan Hart show that I grew up watching. If you have not read the comic books by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, no worries this won't spoil it for you. The cast was fantastic! They did an amazing job portraying their characters. I particularly enjoyed watching the character development throughout the series which provided a great insight into the storyline of the show. The first two seasons were great, but unfortunately, I felt that the rest of the series didn't quite live up to the standards set by the beginning. The show felt rushed, which made some of the episodes feel incomplete, and the characters became irrelevant to the story. The rest of the series was a difficult watch for me, and although I could probably rewatch the first two seasons, I'm disappointed with how the show ended up.
Fate: The Winx Saga (2021)
A one and done watch show
The original version of the show was a cartoon and I was excited to see the darker spin on it, similar to the Riverdale and Sabrina spin-offs. However, I found that this new version lacked depth on many levels. The storyline was not completely disappointing, but some scenes felt like they were just fillers and unnecessary, while others felt rushed. Although the show's characters are meant to be teenagers and some of the struggles they face, such as school, drama, and relationships, are relatable, I felt that some of the characters lacked development or had annoying behaviors that made it hard to watch certain parts of the show. Consequently, I found myself skipping through some scenes. Overall, I believe that the show could have been better and had more potential."
Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024)
Different from original and lacking character development
I was looking forward to watching the live-action adaptation of my favorite animated series, but unfortunately, the show didn't quite meet my expectations. While there were some good elements like the visuals and additional scenes that added depth to the supporting characters, the show's rushed storyline and some changes in the plot made it difficult to fully appreciate. Some of the key moments were either rewritten with other characters or removed altogether, which was disappointing. Additionally, some scenes lacked the humor that the original series had, making them feel dull. Additionally, while some of the cast did a great job in portraying their characters, others didn't quite fit the bill. Despite these shortcomings, I don't think the show was bad - it just didn't live up to the original storyline. I believe that with some tweaks in the pacing and attention to detail, the show could have been much better. Overall, I think the show has potential, but it was disappointing when compared to the original storyline.
What's Love Got to Do with It? (2022)
Drama more than romance
I was not really sure what to expect with this movie and honestly it was more of a drama rather than a romance (little romance much more drama). The two main characters Zoe (James) and Kaz (Latif) showed how two people of different cultures, background, and personalities can have a good friendship, and I really enjoyed seeing their family interactions. However I did feel that the movie missed the mark on the storyline. I did feel that the writers missed the mark of showing a Muslim culture and focused instead on bashing it. The writers could have shown how Kaz's idea of an arranged marriage gave Zoe a different perspective of love and romance, or how Zoe's and his sisters look on love and life can open Kaz's outlook on life helping with his British and Pakistani identity. They were many possibilities that could have illustrated a blending of both cultures, relationship development, character development so on and so forth. Again loved the characters just not a huge fan of the storyline.
Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story (2023)
A great story and must watch series!
Shonda Rhimes did a great job in writing this series. The storyline is loosely based on the 18th century monarch's King George III and his wife Queen Charlotte. The first episode of this series is really interesting and what hooked me into watching the rest of the series, however be patient the does slow a bit it starts to pick back up in the last 3 episodes of the series. The series did an amazing job in showing the development of Charlottes and George's love story, the development of their characters personalities, and struggles of being young monarch's. The cast were a great fit for the characters in this series. You don't need to watch the Bridgerton series to understand and enjoy watching Queen Charlotte's story. There were some scenes that I felt were not relevant or needed, however I highly recommend watching the series.
Murder Mystery 2 (2023)
Meh movie, probably won't watch again.
If you enjoyed the first movie you might not enjoy this one. I really wanted to like this movie after watching the first one and because I am a fan of Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston, however it was just not the movie for me. The movie did have some entertaining moments and a few surprises which made it easy to watch. My issue was the story line, it felt a bit to over place and rushed at times. There was a lot of predictability as to what might happen, when and why. There were some characters that I felt were just unnecessary to the story, and others that were just plain annoying, including sometimes the main. Overall, a movie you can put on, however there are better options for a movie night.
Ghosted (2023)
Entertaining
If you have watched and enjoyed the movie Knight and Day with Diaz and Cruise then you will enjoy watching this movie. Like any normal Rom-Com, the movie has a slow start and you are able to predict some of the scenes and character actions between the two main Evans and De Armas. After about 20 minutes the movie does get livelier having moments full of laughter, action and entertainment. The short cameos from other A-List actors were definitely a plus. This is a "make your own decision" type of movie. Don't go based on the reviews since people have different likes and not all movies are going to hit the mood. Entertainment value yes, plot and storyline was predictable.
The Cabin in the Woods (2011)
Missed the mark
What interested us at first was because Thor...I mean Chris Hemsworth is one of the actors in the movie, as well as a few others, and the trailer seemed interesting so figured we will give this a watch. That is an hour and thirty minutes of my life I could have done something else with. Don't get me wrong the idea of going on a getaway with your friends and it becoming a weekend full of terror can have the makings of a great horror movie plot, but this movie missed the mark and the wheels start falling off within 15 minutes. The cheesy plot and story line is just off the wall to give this movie watcher much interest. There were some great scenes that can be appreciate in a horror film, but it was not enough to entice me to recommend this movie to anyone.
Emanet (2020)
Overall a good watch (Season 1/2)
I saw this show as a recommendation and I really enjoyed watching season 1 and 2, not a fan on season 3.
Halil (Yaman) and Sila (Seher) were amazing! Their chemistry on camera made the connection of their characters feel real and enjoyable to watch. Melih, Gülderen, Tolga and Berat were also great actors that did an amazing job portraying their characters. However, I did feel that this storyline had so much potential but was just filled with unnecessary characters and stories that prevented character development beyond conflict. The protagonists were in constant battle with others and themselves that when new issues developed complicating their lives the same uncertainties from previous events made their issues complicated more than they should have been. I also felt that the story could have concluded between season one and two considering the number of episodes that both seasons combined had. I felt that the appeal of the first season was the character development and how each was growing due to the influence of the other. Season two brought more conflict for the protagonists and new story lines for other characters that I felt some were unnecessary and should just have been focused on the development of the characters already there. Due to circumstances there is a new female lead which changed the story line for season three making it a bit hard to enjoy since I felt they are not only repeating some of the same story from the main characters in season one/two but almost forcing the relationship between Halil and Nana. They should have just replaced Seher (Sila) in order to conclude the story between Yemen and Seher instead of introducing Nana since I just don't feel the connection between the two and I am not a fan of Nana's acting. Overall I do recommend the series as a must watch but I do agree with others that you should just stop at season 2.
The School for Good and Evil (2022)
Entertaining but could have been better
Decided to watch since I had read the book series. The story itself is entertaining and this could have been the making of a good series, however Netflix missed the mark on character and storyline development. There were cast members who fit their role well and were great at portraying their characters. However, there were a few actors who just did not fit their characters well and not giving them their due diligence. The movie does stray from the book, not a big deal since that happens. Some of the parts felt a bit rushed and almost as if you missed something. Overall it is worth the watch with family or kids.
Bay Yanlis (2020)
Good actors, bad directing/writers
I was excited to watch this series since I enjoyed watching the chemistry these two actors had in Dolunay and they did not disappoint in this series. The two protagonists were wonderful in portraying their characters and you were constantly wondering what they will do next.
The story and development of some characters did annoy me. I felt that the writers and directors were rushing to try to wrap up the series since it was not going to go beyond the 14 episodes, however I feel that they did an injustice by not allowing the characters to develop and leaving some of their stories unfinished. The story felt rushed and at times chaotic and hard to follow. Some of the supporting cast did not do enough justice to their characters. At the end you were left with wondering what next. It is worth the watch just be prepared to not fully be happy with the end result.
Dolunay (2017)
Entertaining from the start and worth the watch!
This drama was entertaining from the start and definitely worth the watch. The two protagonists Ferit (Can Yaman) and Nazli (Özge Gürel) had perfect chemistry and were amazing in portraying their characters. It was wonderful to watch how the personality of their characters develop based on their influence on each other. The supporting cast were good, making their characters an interesting watch. My main issue with this series was with the story itself towards the later episodes and not with the actors. I did feel that there could have been more character development with the relationship of characters if the later episodes focused more on growth rather than the same character struggles brought on by old and new antagonist. Overall it was a good drama and definitely worth the watch.
Thai Cave Rescue (2022)
An Interesting Outlook on the Rescue
I have watched the documentaries on the Thai rescue and was looking forward to watching the Netflix mini series but felt that they felt a bit off the mark. The actors in the series were great and definitely delivered the best they could to provide a difference perspective of the emotions and conflicts those involved in the rescue might have been going through, but I felt that Netflix adding a bit of a spin in order to have more of an entertainment and dramatic value moved away from the true events of the rescue. If they had utilized this time to actually outline the events of the rescue, the efforts made, the emotions of the rescuers and the 13 boys then its worth to watch. Is it entertaining? Yes, and you do get some background information on the boys, the coach, and their families. However, it also felt dragged out and theatrical.
Hocus Pocus 2 (2022)
Too much fluff
I agree with some viewers, if you are a fan of the original Hocus Pocus you will want to watch the second one but you will feel disappointed. The new spin on this movie felt as if it lacked character development and true conflict. The target audience is definitely kids since it felt more G rated and childish. It would have been exciting to have seen a bit of more of a conflict with the Sanderson Sisters and the people of Salem but there really was no big issues which made the movie lack entertainment. I also did not enjoy the character changes of Billy, Book and the Sanderson Sisters. If you want entertainment for your kids go ahead and show it since but as an adult and a fan of the original it's a hard pass for me.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
Dr Strange and the Multiverse of Mediocrity
I think I liked this one a little more than the first but the first one was also pretty "meh". They add to character development by giving backstories and giving the audience their perspectives as to why they're the way they are. The movie does have a bit of a dark theme which is captured well by the cinematography and director. There are, however, some moments/writing that make the film a bit cheesy in overall quality which seems to be the direction that the MCU is heading now. They seem to be becoming content with making movies that are essentially just "ok".
Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
Could've Been Better, But Not Terrible
Thor's definitely been my favorite in the stand alone characters so far and maybe Ragnarok set the bar too high but this one just felt like it missed some attention detail and the quality that Ragnarok possessed. It started strong enough but quickly started pouring on the corny a bit too thick and that went on throughout. Background and development of the villain was good (as usual) but felt like they fast forwarded a bit through Jane's development/story along with other characters that seem like will be around in the future. Good acting and some great cameo's like Luke Hemsworth playing Thor during a play in the movie. Finally, felt like it was a bit lost as to the age of target audience they were targeting as it was a bit of a hard PG-13 but at the same time it had a bit too many childish moments for adults. I like that they make these movies fun for adults but think they should keep the PG-13 rating closer to PG.
Speed Kills (2018)
Hard to Watch
The writing and filming made this one tough to watch. Possibly the first gangster/crime movie that I watched in different times just cause of how poorly executed it was. The cinematography had a very amateur vibe to it and the writing, music, and characters were straight cheesy at times. Very unfortunate as well considering I just found out it was based on a real person as well.
Peaky Blinders (2013)
Fantastic From Start To Finish
As a history major and gangster enthusiast, this series had it all for me. The show had great cinematography, actors, and the story line was phenomenal. I wanted to wait until watching the final season to write the review in case it had a GOT style crash and burn. It did not. I want to go on describing but it's hard to do without spoilers but I would definitely put this up with other gangster series greats such as Sopranos, Breaking Bad and Ozarks.
Better Call Saul (2015)
Breaking Bad is still my #1, but this isn't far behind
Very smart writing, fantastic cinematography, and great acting make this a close contender to Breaking Bad. It seemed to hit a bit of a lull around season 4 but quickly regained its traction and has taken off! Similar uses of allusions as its predecessor (or successor?) that I love as well, the show just keeps you guessing and on the edge of your seat throughout. Can't wait to see how it all concludes!
The Flash (2014)
Better than expected
Like most things DC, the show is better than movies. Not all actors are the greatest, but Grant Austin is pretty solid. The show itself is much better than I was expecting but somewhere around season 6/7 it started to drag on a bit. There are many twists and turns throughout and pretty thought out story lines. I highly recommend watching seasons 1-5 and maybe 6. After that it's a bit mediocre.
The Batman (2022)
Not the best, not the worst
Casting Robert Pattinson as batman was almost as bad as having Adam Driver as Kylo Ren. Aside from having to deal with that, it was a decent but not great movie. It was definitely the most dark and gritty take on any Batman movie and it was a pretty interesting story line/plot. The directing and cinematography was pretty solid and it was filled some pretty good twists and turns.
