Killer! (1989)
A $9,500 Masterpiece
Thats right, This film was made on a budget of 9,500 dollars. Shot on super 8mm film only adds to the realistic, gritty atmosphere shot in the Carolina backwoods. I originally saw this movie on late night cable television (Showtime I believe) and was highly impressed. Money ran tight and several locals were employed and a local actress was asked if she would still do a topless scene for half the pay she said she'd only show one breast instead of two. The special effects are crude but effective. Its style and atmosphere is somewhat similar to Last house on the Left (another classic)but it isn't as complex. The subsequent Elwood film Road Kill was a major disappointment. Someone on here said they liked it better than Killer and I bought it on ebay, that was a mistake. If you like simple, gritty, spooky horror movies with some black humor, excessive violence and a decent soundtrack check this out. If your into the new, commercial, high budget stuff you may not like this film. I surely liked it and give it the highest rating.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006)
disappointing
I waited with much anticipation for this???????The 2003 remake was in my opinion the best of all the chainsaw films so I was hoping the follow up would be as good or close, boy was I wrong! The movie had potential with angry bikers running amuck but nothing came to fruition with the bikers with the exception of a dyke and moron biker dude getting offed.I would have liked to see the biker gang terrorize and have there way with the kids and get offed by the hewitts now that would have been good!!!!!!!!Gorehounds should like the unrated version, but overall this one should be rented but i wouldn't shell out 20 clams like i did although i did get the 2 disc 2003 special edition as a free bonus which I haven't opened yet. If you haven't seen the remake check it out (2003) i give that version 9 stars by far the best of the lot. The beginning gets 5 stars. The original classic gets 6 stars. leatherface gets 4 stars. There is a chainsaw film starring Mathew Mcgonegy(spell) 2 or 3? it gets 3 stars. In conclusion, I would hesitantly recommend viewing the Beginning if you are a big chainsaw fan as I but only the unrated version, it is the goriest of the Texas chainsaw films by far. In fact, it is one of the gorier films I have seen in recent memory.
East End Hustle (1976)
70's exploitation film disappoints
I made the mistake of purchasing this movie new as I was unfortunately drawn in by the movie's cover. The theme on the case sleeve seemed interesting and it was, but the film was very simple: Nudity, sex and violence. This film was boring at times (as many of the scenes dragged) and for this reason it was rather difficult to sit through, the only reason I gave it 3 stars was for a couple of scenes in the movie which were well done (even though they were very short they were quite effective).I don't know if the production ran out of money but the movie ends abruptly resulting in a rather poor climax. The ending pretty much sums up the movie, vague and disappointing. There is a lengthy sex scene but it was filmed with poor lighting and is rather difficult to see.Strangely enough, there are no streetwalking or escorting scenes either.I expected more street hustling type action considering the theme. The film however does have its moments(maybe 10 minutes overall) but as a whole it is highly disappointing. The listed running time on sleeve is 90 minutes 80 of which I would have been better off sleeping through.
