Reviews
The Bookshop (2017)
Negative reviewers are philistines
I've never written a review before but am saddened and taken aback by the vitriol of certain reviewers of this masterful and subtle film. The production, the cast, and the story are all captivating and moving. I needn't go into a synopsis of the story as others have more or less done so. I will say that it is a big "little" film that tells of small town politics and human dynamics with great compassion and sensitivity. It also tells an honest story of what all too often happens to an outsider. Book lovers will especially appreciate it.
All the Money in the World (2017)
Bring back Kevin Spacey
While I have long admired, and still do, Christopher Plummer's work- however I couldn't help but see Kevin Spacey and what he would have brought to the role. I hope one day, the feint-hearted Mr. Ridley will release that original version. Mr Spacey may be a benign predator, but he's not a monster. In all the allegations I've seen he backed off when his actions were rebuffed. Mr, Spacey's incalculable talent does not deserve the knee-jerk condemnation he has received. I hope an embarrassed public will redeem this gross injustice toward a great artist. This film suffers from his absence and could have been so much more powerful had it been released with him in it.
Oceans Rising (2017)
Not really so bad...
I found it an entertaining tale. That's all it was meant to be. The critics who lambasted the acting are far too critical. Alright, the script has some major flaws, but I felt the cast did a very good job of telling the story. The special effects? Well, I've seen much worse (think of the sci-fi films of the 1950s...which I'm sure most of the reviewers here have never seen?) Not the worst film by far. Compared with "The Blair Witch Idiocy", this film is "Space Odyssey 2001"! I would give the film a 6- but gave it a 10 just to boost the ratings and give the actors a chance to do more work- they deserve it.
