Hypocritical and a Lie
21 April 2024
They're putting a friendly mask disguised as humanism but nothing but an advertisement for the military-industrial complex. But in typical US tradition, commenters see the movie or characters reduced to meaningless terms like "liberal" or "conservative" and judge a movie this way. Or words like "freedom". Ask someone in China what that means to them. Talking is great, but this is misleading. "Go fight in wars because democracy" as if the people had self-rule.

But I do think Ben Gazzarra and Sterling Hayden are fine actors. The relationship between the uncle and nephew was good, but they should have humanized it more, instead of sounding like a debate squad. It was full of "the audience will be so keen thinking they're the only ones tickling at the thought of knowing the references".

I hate censorship, but good taste would be nice. I just don't like being talked down to. I don't believe that they believe what they're (author) saying.

Great Subject - Not a Great Documentary
17 December 2023
Even the title isn't accurate.. I would have liked to have seen more comedy, and his contemporaries like Mort Sahl, who was performing at Corey's age. He mentions SF, but the director is supposed to bring things out of a man who has lived so long, about the legendary hungry i, and its impressario, Enrico Banducci, who was instrumental in Irwin Corey's success, as was San Francisco, but that only took up a few seconds.

Again, a man who lived to be 100 shouldn't have his documentary spent on meaningless chatter between he and his wife kvetching and moaning. They had Dick Gregory there, but hardly use him instead to tell us the stories we already know. There's a lot of things I could tell you that are much more interesting simply from reading NYT archives.

Too extracurricular
8 December 2023
Using the currency of the moment to tie in other trendy things.. A stockbroker mentality. Where was the "Midnight Cowboy" stuff? They took a short interview with Jon Voigt and spliced it up and inserted a bit every 15 minutes.. And there's one old Dustin Hoffman audio they used.. I'm a left-winger, and this trendy justice whorior thing just bugged me. They are just making money off the latest thing that makes money. Nothing else.

It's a great movie, but I would have loved to have heard more interviews, more archives.. I don't need some 24-year old to explain the movie to me. It was nice to have some audio from the writer, who has been forgotten in cinema.

Unique! Check It Out
5 July 2022
Very fine writing, acting, funny. They don't make movies like this anymore. Even the minor characters all have importance, and all do a good job. Lots of subtle humor, and it has a good independent spirit. I didn't see CK's first movie, and wish I had seen it first for chronological context and to see the evolution, but I'm looking forward to seeing that now, too.

George Carlin - Mort Sahl - Bill Hicks
25 May 2022
And sorta ended there... The Loyal Opposition. Now, we have nothing but groups. George Carlin was a social/political satirist in the tradition of Mort Sahl, who started it all.. Taking a humorous approach and using your skills to carefully examine the country in a literate way, on the diagnosis and to surprise the audience using irony, sarcasm, etc.. We really are living in an Orwellian period, because the terms "right" and "left" have no meaning, just like the many other redundant terms people use simply because it's trending. There's no left-wing in the US, and really hasn't been since the 1930s, but we still had artistic dissidents. Not anymore. Now they are bought off for so cheap to be salesmen (excuse me, salesPEOPLE - where people from ALL groups can be liars) and peddle whatever business USA Inc. Wants.. Carlin spent most of his time talking about political correctness and the damage it does by placating energies with symbolic nothing or promises.. As Ralph Nader said so wisely, "What do you win when you win?" but the conformity is so much now, that you can spot someone's one-party baloney from a mile away.

YouTube has the first time Carlin was on TV.. In fact, he was on "The Tonight Show" with Mort Sahl as host (they went with Johnny Carson) in 1962 and there were some great shows, including one that had a panel of women, discussing the modern woman, and the things they liked/disliked about men.

I urge people to check out the archives to get the full story of George Carlin. They conveniently leave certain things out, make cuts right before he's about to say he admired Castro (thanks to Jack Burns; it's in his book by Tony Hendra), but remember who's names are on the credits...

If you really want truth, go directly to the source -- George Carlin. It's all on YouTube, but unless it's packaged into a commodity, people will pass on an actual Carlin interview, but spend that time listening to a 3rd hand account, only because it's someone who is the flavor of the month in May of 2022.

Hendrix Missed Most of Terry's playing
8 May 2022
First off, I don't need Jimi's approval -- any musician knows how great Terry was. "Introduction" is quite the introduction.

I'm glad his daughter made this. I'm surprised it needed to be crowdfunded - doesn't she have millions? Why not keep more of the pie? I noticed her husband doing the narrating, saving money.

Cetera has never done anything related to Chicago on video, but he did do this for Michelle and Terry Kath. I'm so happy, and wish there were more excerpts of him. Too bad they didn't play another interview, since they have the archives (we don't).

Finding the guitar took a lot of time, and it didn't matter to me. This was only 75 minutes long - I would have used more of the cutting room interviews.

In high school, I'd listen to Chicago, and then my friend told me what happened to Terry, and it saddens me to this day. I cried for the first time from a song, "Oh, Thank You Great Spirit" - one of my favorite songs ever. I'd tell fans to start with the first album, and go chronologically. Lots of concerts available for traders/collectors who can hopefully upload them for the world. I try to do my part.. I've gotten back into Chicago, can't stop watching this documentary. Three times in the last two weeks. And the Chicago documentary, which got a ton of heat from the journalistic community, HuffPo, Danny Seraphine, Peter Cetera who called it a "crockumentary". I wish the ex-Chicago members made a documentary.

I would also like to know more Terry Kath. I'd like to see archives -- interviews in print, audio, video.. Someone should write a book.

Watch This While Taking Notes!
21 November 2021
Pause it, research each point further. My one criticism is that they spend too much time on forensics and things many already know. I would check out "The Jim Garrison Tapes" which is free on YouTube and I would YouTube the late, great Mort Sahl who was the hub. He put Jim Garrison, Mark Lane, etc., on his show, and he was the reason Garrison got on The Tonight Show w/ Johnny Carson (after he told Carson he was working in New Orleans) and Mort had clout and believability, and put Carson on the spot, and all this is on YouTube. Mort also got Garrison a great Playboy interview because of his relationship with Hefner, and went on The Steve Allen Show with Garrison and Dornan. Check out the YouTube channel "Loyal Opposition"

How Government Works Inside A Home
18 November 2021
This is on Amazon Prime - check it out.. I don't want to say too much about it, but if I don't, no one will see it.

It's a movie about an Egyptian mother who works in a high-position for the Ministry of Education, with very pro-democratic ideals, but also with six kids who are growing up and becoming individuals. She encourages them to express themselves, to be themselves, but also wants them to be responsible. She is a widow who wants time for herself and her love life, and things finally become too much, and the kids tell their mother they want this democratic idealism in their home.

The movie is full of very good dialogue with these discussions. All the characters are likable, and when they discuss their plight, sacrifice, desires, and current/future state of the family, each one has a point. Written by the wonderful writer Mahfouz, it's also light-hearted and comedic at times.

Zinneman is a decent director, but this one is for....
28 April 2021
Those who don't know better or those who like to be bored.. You could have cut this non-compelling non-story into 5 minutes. Upon reading the description, I thought there is no way they can screw this movie up, but its so tedious, full of redundancy, re-hashing, meaningless dedication to nothing of substance.

Nomadland (2020)

Well, let me explain...
27 April 2021
This movie was made fifty years too late it seems. Hollywood is usually fifty years behind, though. It's actually based on an article from Harper's fifty years ago. As for the movie, this should have been one of I liked very much, but it had too much DIY (Do-It-Yourself). You'd think the audience for this movie has never left their house to know how to live "on the road". I've had experiences like this, but by backpack, and all over the world, hostel-hopping, farming, sleeping in a park for a week with friends, and it's tough, but also fun, just depending on how you feel at the moment. I never knew or cared about "Bo" - we don't see him in the movie, and it seemed like a way to bring in sentimentality/sadness to a situation that didn't need it, and was probably interrupted. I would have liked to have seen more conversations from Blinkie, Linda, and Bob, who must be non-actors, because they were not only natural, but they reminded me of people I know. I'd think "Cool", and then the 60-second conversation was over. I never liked Jason Statham - he seems to always play a creepy-kinda guy who just has an unlikable face... I would have lied to know more about the main character, and would have probably been better not to re-do the Amazon job scenes, etc... It might have been a good to see the not-so-community oriented "tent cities" all over the country, too. Pretty soon, we'll ALL be working for Amazon in some way, and we ARE the product. Social media isn't free, but some of the nomads found it useful and if that's where the people are at, you don't have much of a choice.

Frances is good as usual, but the movie seemed to take 30 minutes of good movie and make it almost 100 movies. However, I guess I'm glad this won Best Picture, because people should know about struggle, which I'm sure they do, but that it's probably more common than just the undesirables. I liked that Statham's and Frances' character didn't "bang", because it seemed like the way it would have gone. It might have been cool and been expressive if the young man and her had a one-night stand to show a more instinctual nature, and the depravities of the road, and if two people can do something so they can both have one of those free pleasures in life, why not, but I praise on not including any, too. It was good the sister wasn't cliche, supported her, and mentioned how she was emblematic of the pioneers, those who sought a new frontier, when man meets a new idea which is probably impossible staying in one place, which is something I seem to prefer now, but there's too many reasons and not enough space to type this all out.

I give it an extra point for being a movie I actually I didn't turn off like the last handful of movies from my beloved 1930-70s preference, or ever thought about turning it off. I'd say this is a pretty accessible movie; a majority would probably like this, I don't see too many extremes, where people say it's their favorite or the worst movie they saw, but I do like looking at the extremes on the user reviews on IMDB... I also liked it a little more after lighting up a pinner, because the movie is reflective and moderately paced, maybe too slow for a casual viewer.

I must say, if THIS is the best movie, I'm definitely not watching the others. I guess I'm glad it won, because for me, the movies made in my lifetime aren't unique, lots of bad writing, too much thought into commercialism... I've seen many movies like this, but if you DO like this, check out "Harry and Tonto", "The Straight Story", or take a trip yourself... "Paris, Texas" is another good movie.

27 MInutes Of Nothing Being Said
24 February 2021
I can't stand when someone tries to be abstract and downright absurd so others can say "Woah man, so deep".

I wanted to see 1970 Paris, and hoping someone would say something with clarity, instead of the jive-talkin'.. I've downloaded a few of his books, but after seeing him fool around and just being a primadona, I have no interest in spending hours with 1/100th of the content, of things I already know and experienced myself without being a jerk.

Always Tell The Truth
22 February 2021
Patrice was portrayed honestly by honest people who knew him. You have a right to feel and think however you want, despite what others lead you to believe. As a human being, it's the one right you have - don't self-censor, but be sincere and honest.

Very well edited, I liked the round-table of those involved to collectively discuss his humor and his life, but also have them individually give their feelings. This isn't watered-down, and I highly urge you to check out the unedited version.

I don't want to give any spoilers, so I'll try to be general to serve as a free advertisement for this documentary. I had a feeling it would be good knowing Bill Burr helped produce this, a funny man with integrity, and a friend of Patrice. It's a sad commentary on our lives when the only ones who can tell the truth are stand-up comedians, and that's no longer the case, unless you're grandfathered in like Mort Sahl, but he's been blacklisted repeatedly unfortunately.

As a black man, I find nothing more prejudicial than political correctness. Some rich white old man going to tell ALL black people (or women, Middle-Eastern folks, etc) what they can or cannot handle? Freedom of thought is not allowed. White people aren't the enemy, it's those who have monopolized this earth. In an era of information, it's Big Tech now. Resist.

Patrice O'Neal isn't my favorite comedian, or even a Top 10, but we need more of him. Humor and laughter in general can get at the truth, either by that feeling you get after noticing the irony of our situation, or how you relate to it personally. I was especially moved by hi step-daughter who had some interesting things to say how his humor helped her life.

I wonder how many people know about Patrice Lamumba. Bill Hicks. Mort Sahl. Jim Morrison. Roger Waters. John Lennon. John Cassavetes. Jimmy Hoffa. Marlon Brando. The truth - not what the media picks and chooses to serve their own financial bias.

The more I disagree with something, the more I want to know why. Get out of your comfort zone. With COVID, I think people have had time to evaluate, and finding their (and our) world is lacking soul nutrition. You know what's out there now, try checking out the movies, stand-up comedy, music of the 60s, 70s, and even before that. See if you can come to your own conclusions as to how we got here.

Jimmy Carter and 70s Rock = President
4 January 2021
Carter wasn't and isn't concerned with what was popular.. He was an anomaly, being a liberal from Plains, Georgia.. Not only with the music, but also how long he's been fighting for the Palestinian genocide, even calling israel an apartheid state, which might have hurt his recent book sales, but as a moral man, Jimmy Carter just told the truth. President Carter seemed to force Jerry Brown's hand - and his bands... Lots of great music, especially The Allman Brothers Band. Jimmy Carter also reached out to Ralph Nader, but didn't really follow through.

Music transcends all... People move to a melody - there's nothing manipulative about it, and people feel a sense of bonding when they remind of you of themselves. After Nixon/Watergate/Vietnam, the US wanted a change...

"The Establishment always incubates its own overthrow." - Mort Sahl

My Psychedelic Love Story (2020 TV Movie)

LSD (and the CIA) Is One Heck of a Drug!
29 November 2020
I wish Errol Morris would stop fake re-enactments - it's a documentary. He started this with "The Thin Blue Line". Because it was so successful, almost every director since the 1980s uses this technique which I'd call anti-documentary. But he picks fine topics, such as Bannon (which is his best one), "American Dharma" which use Bannon's favorite movies as a parallel dialogue or point of reference to the conversation and it's very effective, partly because the movies are so great, and "Fog of War"

I've been involved with this story for decades. I have always had my doubts about Joanna. I think every person vital in understanding the mind, being involved with the anti-war movement, anti-establishment politics in general feel she is a fraud. And if you remember, she says "I lie all the time and have my entire life". I don't know why she then went on to describe her heritage over and over. I do know why. She wants the sympathy and guilt from the beginning to make the rest of the story (for those on the fence) to believe her.

She thinks she's a CIA plant. Many others think she worked for the CIA to get Timothy Leary in trouble and having to actually "cop-out" or sell-out and become a snitch, an FBI informant working with the government.

Why was that so important, even for President Nixon? Because the CIA, etc., know how influential heroes are, which is why the US Government, and in particular, the FBI were trying to deport John Lennon.

Many in that period became cynical and apathetic, even nihilistic. George Carlin would lament this in his great comedy bit-rant "Everybody's a Rat" (check it out), which is the goal of "power", so that you can substitute that loss of soul nutrition by being obedient consumers, and have money become your god, because then you are easily controlled and playing into the hands of the establishment - doing their dirty work for them. As opposed to sacrificing yourself for a greater cause, even the lost causes, as Mort Sahl would and still says (one example of a man who would not sell-out)..

Free speech isn't a fad - it's our 1st Amendment in the Constitution. If someone tells you "You're not allowed to talk about ______" - do it 10x as much. The most important issues are usually the ones that aren't discussed enough (or hardly at all).

The tale of Timothy Leary is a game of chess/chicken. The government let him escape, but used that as leverage. I don't think anyone won. The people lost.

Jim Morrison's (The Doors) Favorite Movie
1 November 2020
So I checked it out, and man, this is probably the first experimental movie that is actually great ("Little Fugitive" was another one, but that drew mostly from Italian neo-realism from a decade earlier with Vittorio De Sica leading the way).

I love the narration style (by the director himself). It's amazing how much we can learn and understand from human nature, despite not having subtitles or knowing exactly what they say, which brings a new element. Instead of reading, you are observing, and feel like you are there.

Very sensual, erotic, and exotic, without being exploitative. Again, it's a movie about human nature, with all the universal themes.

Just like any great, it will always be great. One of my favorite movies ever. Last time I checked this was online in full. Watch it out now before it's NOT there!

Centers Around Bannon's Favorite Movies, BUT
31 August 2020
Errol Morris is a weasel. He was face to face with Bannon for 17 hours, but waits until AFTER he gets bad reviews to badmouth him.

The movie centers around Bannon's favorite movies, including "Sergeant York" and others, and how they revolve around the Trump 2016 Campaign, but also how he got started, and why he thinks the way he does... Definitely worth the $3.99, and I'm cheap!

The featured review on the main page is mixed up... Vittorio De Sica directed "Il Boom", not Dino Risi. I don't know how he got it confused, especially with De Sica's name right on "Directed By" at the top of the page.

Pretty good movie, 7/10... I guess I find humor in movies in all the "wrong" places.

Could Have Been Better, IF
17 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It was directed/produced by someone else, and if they removed 95% of the "directors" who were so worthless... There is this fella, Daniel Espinosa, who goes on and on (while looking at Bergman's library of VHS tapes) and saying "Oh we watched Ghostbusters.. It says 'Rental fee paid', so he paid for this. But what are you gonna do about it? "I'm Bergman" (and other awkward crap). Wes Anderson goes on a soliloquy about how Americans pronounce Max von Sydow, and how the Swedish pronounce it (properly). Of course to appear "metaphysical", they introduce Martin Scorsese in what is a premature recording. He's getting his seat arranged, is asking inane questions (nothing to do with Bergman), then starts to ask "What is this for?" and asks which company they're working for (as if he just flew to Sweden without knowing this information). Then goes on that he might not know the chronology of his work (so enlightening).

Then I see Ang Lee, who made the movie "Hulk"... Michael Haneke said something I don't even remember, maybe commenting on the carpet. "Funny Games".... I'm guessing Claire Denis is a director, but she goes on saying how she hopes there are no dogs, and stops short of saying that she would have to leave Faro Island if there were.

Robert De Niro (screen time: 2 minutes) says "If you ask me six months from now about his work, I'll be more prepared. I would have an answer for possible questions you ask me". Again, as I said numerous times, a documentary is 90 minutes long. 1/4 of it will be spent on watching people take airplanes, cars, walking, taking their shoes off and putting on slippers because the owners of the place prefer it that way. So there's only a few minutes, and its spent on ridiculous non-Bergman stuff, by those who are not his contemporaries in any way.

Woody Allen is in this, and he's always had a love for Bergman.. Fine. Show more of him. One Swedish director is curious about one porno movie (Emannuelle) in a library of hundreds of videos. Even towards the end when he has a second chance to say something meaningful, he observes and becomes fascinated with "Ingmar Bergman's fuse box".. Then in another room he finds a cane.. "Ingmar used this during his dancing days, when he would dance the Charleston.... before becoming a Nazi". He thinks he's funny, too, but comes off as ridiculous. Lars von Trier is obsessive and repetitive about masturbation. He kept saying "I'm sure Ingmar sat here and masturbated like crazy.. I'm sure he had a small vesicle, but I'm sure he masturbated so much in this room" (I guess Ingmar is the only one who masturbated).. Lars then goes on and on.. "Ingmar vomits, just like we vomit. He $hits like we $hit.".. Speaking of shaise, Wes goes on to say "This is a strange place to have a toilet". Even the Swedish director goes all around the library and says, "Why would anyone want to have this many movies". John Landis says how "The Seventh Seal becomes hard to watch because it has been parodied so much, you know with Death as a character".. Of course he'd say something stupid like this, because he doesn't have the imagination or creativity to come up with an idea like that. If only Bergman could have directed a masterpiece like "Three Amigos". At one point, he even says (thinking of "The Virgin Spring").. "Wait a minute, this seems like a medieval movie about revenge. Wait a minute, it IS a medieval movie about revenge" -- what a "genius". Ridley Scott names one of Bergman's movies and asks out loud "I wonder if this was naive" - but offers no explanation of what the hell he is talking about.

Some director with the surname of Payne says how "The Seventh Seal" doesn't hold up. Not only wasn't this guy alive when the movie came out, but he should realize the movie is full of universal themes that anyone can understand, even if it centered around the plague in Europe around 800 years ago. Right after, it cuts to a new scene (I wonder if this was intentional) where Woody Allen says "It helps to know history, philosophy".. Again with limited time, they should have used more of his interview, and cut the others out. If this was made today, they wouldn't have included Woody at all, because Twitter doesn't like him.

This was a random viewing experience. I had revisited a lot of Bergman movies, mostly ones I had already seen, and the documentary proves my point. I could be even more descriptive, but my old computer keeps freezing up, and this is taking way too long to type out.

Room for Rent (2019)

Minimalist, Economic, Realistic, GOOD!
8 May 2019
I saw "Room For Rent" (2019) and I had no idea it was a horror movie. The lead actress is perfectly suited because she's ambiguous, although seeming like a nice but curious woman. The others' acting wasn't great, especially the "girl", but the story is very good, even when she leaves her hours. I seem to like settings in one place.. I don't like gore, and I like a good story. I think its why I've stayed away from the genre. Although I don't remember gore, I couldn't stand "Rosemary's Baby" despite being a fan of Cassavetes acting (and his directing). There wasn't a lot of movement, the setting was in the house for the most part, but it didn't remind me of all the horrors people around me would discuss... I'm always looking for great movies, and I'd say 99% of the movies I love/watch were made BEFORE I was born.

Some other horrors I liked (IMDB categorization) -Onibaba (1964) -The Road Builder (1971) -Eyes Without A Face (1960) -Peeping Tom (1960) -Blind Beast (1969)

Linda Was The One Who Cared
19 November 2018
Even after she left psychiatric services, it was LINDA who went to be with their father since he was in ill health.. AND, she stopped taking her medications, because she mentioned to her sister that they made her so sleepy, she was afraid of not being able to hear her father throughout the night in case he needed help.

And yet no one helped Linda.... Also a mention of the sister, Robin, wanting 100% of the inheritance money.. And the daughter was such an awful person - you can tell they omit a lot of important information.

I wish I could have met Linda. She seemed like one of a few people interesting enough to meet.

Mort Sahl
18 April 2017
Mort Sahl is the only reason to see this. It's obvious he writes his material - he did this in the 50's and every other decade, usually his stand-up routine.

As for Jerry Lewis, I don't feel anything for him. At least he's not playing the silly role, but there isn't much here. Took 3 years to even distribute. The movie was considered so bad that the French wouldn't show it!

He's funnier
17 April 2017
He is much funnier in real person, in an interview, or on Chappelle Show. Maybe it's because it was his first special, and wanting recognition, probably wasn't himself. Instead of using his regular voice, he'd do what so many others do..

References. I don't watch TV shows, don't know about the movies he mentioned. I also don't keep up with whatever goes viral, don't care about gossip and trivial matters.

It's still worth a watch, and he has his moments, but I'd check out other things first.

This is not a political movie
27 May 2006
This documentary is a great piece, and is something everyone should watch. Those who care for the environment, and even those who hate the environment. This isn't a liberal or conservative thing, it boils down to money, and how the corporations dictate our lives, the things government can control. Our money! You don't think they can charge less for gas?? C'mon.

The real reason why environment doesn't seem to affect many as it should is because its a thing we don't notice. You can't tell how much the smog hurts your lungs. Don't bring up age expectancy and tell me its better than it was pre-industry, because through technology, we are getting to live older, but our health is horrible, and the environment has a lot to do with it. I've been to other continents, and a place like Europe, has cheap, great food, with no hormones just so the huge corporation can make billions at the cost of our health. It's you do for me, I do for you. Republicans (regardless of their feelings on the environment) are held up by strings by the biggest industrialists of the nation, and the Democrats (some), who speak for better regulation will get peanuts to run with.
