Freddy (2022)
How are people giving this 7 and 8 stars???
Some of the revenge plot points in this movie might have been inspired by a Spanish movie Sleep Tight. Sleep Tight is an intense, well made drama thriller with solid characters and a gripping storyline, unlike this movie.
The overall "plan" of the Kainaaz and her bf is so stupid. Their actions and the things they do after her plan is revealed and how they treat Kartik Aryan is just so dumb. I am honestly shocked at all the great reviews. I could list down all the stupid things they do which makes you think, are the script writers dumb, or do they think the audience is dumb??
The final standoff at the farm house is just the icing on the cake in terms of dumb things all these characters are doing. Just the fact that the couple even agrees to meet at the guy's secluded farmhouse whose tortoise they killed is laughable.
There is zero character development. From someone who can barely talk to women this guy turns into a cold blooded killer. Oh and that was Kainaaz's plan all along - hope that this most simple, harmless loser can be turned into a killer for her convenience. LOL.
The story writes write a lose, unconvincing, script, and yet it seems to be getting favorable reviews from Indian audiences. Unless we the audience start setting higher standards for ourselves and for the movies we watch, Bollywood will keep churning out movies with mediocre to downright dumb storylines, and the actors and products will keep making money.
I don't understand where all the good scriptwriters / storytellers are in the Indian movie industry.
Hasan Minhaj: The King's Jester (2022)
Really not that funny at all for a stand-up special.
If this were a Ted Talk or a Commencement Speech this would deserve a 8 on 10. It's basically Hasan talking about his personal experiences which cast a light on issues pertaining to family, religion, politics, social discrimination etc etc, interspersed with with some funny, and quite often cliched jokes too far and few in between.
For a stand-up special, this just wasn't witty or funny or original enough at all. I mean he's literally talking about things that happened to him, and in many ways it's just self-gratifying.
Really expected something much more than this. His episodes of Patriot Act provide more laughs than this.
Gehraiyaan (2022)
Definitely NOT a deep journey into modern human relationships..
These Bollywood writers are either too lazy or inept to deliver tight, engrossing stories that actually make sense.
The entire movie revolves around Deepika's affair and its consequences. However the way the affair actually takes place just makes no sense. There is absolutely no buildup that will actually convince a smart audience that the cheating was bound to happen. It's as if the writer thought - ok we gotta make her cheat, so let's just make it happen at the start of the movie. And too with her sister's boyfriend / husband to be? Makes no sense.
The whole corporate fraud etc and the way it was resolved also was just all over the place. Nothing deep about this movie - and contrary to the movie's IMDB description, this is Definitely NOT a deep journey into modern human relationships. Maybe a journey into some really screwed up family's two generations of screwed up behavior.
Also the crazy revelation that Deepika's mom also was a cheater. Really? What's the point other than shock value?
The acting was quite good, hence the 5 stars.
Dhamaka (2021)
Good commentary on Indian media, but lose plot and average acting.
Yes the whole angle on Indian media and its obsession with TRPs was interesting, but the actual plot of the movie - it's as if moviemakers just don't expect Indian audiences to actually think. They assume it's Bollywood so sab kuch chalta hai. Honestly the plot , the way the terrorist was dealt with, the way the Counter Terrorism unit acted, was average at best, and downright stupid in some of the instances. I can bring up a lot of things, but will just bring up 1 - it took the authorities hours to figure out that the person they thought they were talking to, was not who he claimed to be, because that person was one of the three workers who died in the sea link incident. That's literally the first thing they should've been figured out, by simply even just googling the incident. Lol.
Also, I don't think Kartik Aryan was able to pull this role off at all. It's like he was trying so hard to bring out all these crazy emotions, but he just couldn't do it.
Ojing-eo geim (2021)
Very entertaining show, but nothing spectacular
Yes the show was super entertaining and had you engrossed, and might even go on to become Netflix's most watched show, but for viewers who have seen enough cinema, there was nothing ground breaking here.
The overall plot about rich people being bored so using poor people for entertainment - that's been done. The final revelation the old man gave was quite cliched.
What was the point of the entire sub plot with the cop looking for his brother? He turns out to be the main guard, but so what? That seemed quite a pointless chase.
Half the games were quite boring to be honest.
As enough people have mentioned here, the VIPs were a shocker. It was quite expected that the games were being funded by a crew of rich bored people for entertainment, but those actors and their dialogue gets a 0/10.
Still, the show had great acting and fun characters, but the plot could have been WAY tighter.
The Family Man (2019)
Season 2 comes with a weak plot
Yes, the actors killed it in their roles.
Once again a great show is let down (at least slightly) by a few episodes which follow the steps of a Bollywood style movie more than a realistic show where you expect top Indian field agents to behave smartly.
In several instances we see these Indian agents, who are assigned to the most important mission of their lives for India's national security, behave quite ineptly. I will never understand why backup was not called to the airport hangar once the 2 agents suspected something was off. I will never understand why an immediate red alert wasn't sounded to all checkpoints around the area post the shootout. How the truck got away without alerting the checkpoints is quite crazy, and stupid. There seemed to be more resources devoted to finding the kidnapped daughter in Mumbai than to finding the terrorists in Chennai. Lol.
Also, even the terrorists were very predictable in their every move, and were tracked down so easily without much effort thanks to Mr Chellum. This season was not very exciting.
Looking forward to a tighter season 3.
Drishyam 2 (2021)
Was the climax really that amazing?????
I must say, given the amount of trash Bollywood releases on a regular basis, when a normal, decent, no-nonsense movie with some mystery comes along, people tend to go crazy about it, like wow what a movie!
If you compare this story to top international crime mysteries, this movie is average at best. The climax here is that the hero bribed some security guards and cemetery caretakers to get away with his crime....this is quite underwhelming at best....the movie isn't bad, it's just quite a simple story....reading all the reviews that have just astounded viewers and critics, I almost feel sad that this is what so many people consider to be A+ cinema, when this should be a B at max.
Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story (2020)
Best Indian webseries of 2020, and more.
SonyLIV has hit the jackpot with this show.
Firstly, the story of Harshad Mehta and that entire time period in the Indian financial markets, is pretty unbelievable (yet true), and in itself a story worth knowing.
Secondly, the actual script, direction, casting, acting has been nothing less than outstanding. There is nothing 'over the top' about the show, unlike most Netflix and Prime big budget shows. Yet this show is gripping, thrilling in ways I think most Indian shows have never yet managed to be. Just wow. If you haven't seen it, please do yourself a favor and watch it right now.
Only caveat: Some technical aspects of the stock and money markets might not be the easiest concepts to understand, but I feel as the show progresses, viewers gain a clearer understanding of them, just as many of the characters on the show do as well.
Mirzapur (2018)
Season 2 is an entertaining Bollywood-style ride at best
While season 1 had an intense gripping plot, season 2 could at best be characterized as entertaining, with more Bollywood style storylines than what fans would expect.
A lot of the characters just behave stupidly, and it's their stupidities that advance the plot. There is no real buildup of climactic events, or development of characters - things just happen, without much planning, at least none the audience gets to see anyway. All the alliances forged are extremely predictable as well. The ease with which characters get manipulated is very underwhelming.
There are a lot of weak plot points and so-called stupid plans being executed. One worth mentioning is the CM's murder planned by his brother. Looks like either the writers, or the CM's brother, did not put in much thought into it. The brother gets into another car, something he's never done before - I mean, wow, he didn't think that would be suspicious? The mute/deaf guy gets caught and is so easily linked to Sharad Shukla. Epic fail. Oh, and the brother as the new CM, recording all his extra curricular activities leading to his downfall. Smart guy. Very disappointing, unconvincing writing by the storytellers.
The background score was great though - definitely gave the show more gravitas than it deserved. Oh, and most of the shootouts scenes were more comical than anything else. There was nothing about this season that was really convincing except the acting, which was great as usual.
Mr. Robot (2015)
Unpopular Review - Excellent acting , terribly frustrating storyline
Honestly, this show has really frustrated me, and I'm sure a lot of other fans as well. The characters, the acting has no doubt been excellent , 10/10. But let's get to the story.
This show deserves a 9/10 only if it's considered as a show about a guy battling with mental health disorders. But right from the start we are plunged into a world of hackers, scheming corporates, and a plan to bring down the world's most powerful organization. That is what excited me, and I am sure most viewers.
After 4 seasons of one plot twist after another - with one recurring theme, i.e. Elliott almost always has no idea who he is, what he is up to, what is real, what is not.....after 4 seasons of all this, turns out we don't find out much, except for Elliot's multiple personalities (you thought he was one guy? He's actually 2? Oh no wait, it's actually 3....oh but wait....I mean, are you kidding me? Shocking plot twists in a great story are always welcome, but when it reaches the point that the viewers just Never know what's going on, if what they are watching is a dream, reality, parallel reality....it just becomes a joke.
Die hard fans are going to call my criticisms the actual beauty and whole point of the show....but in the end, the show should be for the fans, for the viewers, and after 4 seasons of watching such a heavy show, practically every plot point seems to have been trivialized, and I am just left highly disappointed and kind of pissed off.
Also, what of Whiterose's machine, the only other massive plot point? We never really get to know what it was. Was it just some delusion of Whiterose? And how was Angela convinced it worked? I guess cuz...she was delusional too??? Basically all the key characters on this show have mental issues of some sort and the entire show has become just about how they deal with them, rather than an actual, "real" plot.....of course this begs the question...what is real? What is not? WHATEVER.
The Rental (2020)
Great buildup with a pointless, disappointing ending
When watching such films, you are kept glued to the screen because you want to know who's doing all this and why. And when you find out it's a nameless, faceless person with no motive whatsoever, other than this being his hobby/full time passion, it renders the whole movie a waste of time.
The Sinner (2017)
How dare did Netflix allow Season 3 to air?
Season 1: 8/10
Season 2: 7/10
Season 3: 0/10
Weighted rating: 5/10
