Jogi (2022)
Good intro to the Sikh Genocide
Although this movie was less about the genocide and more about a story in the setting of the 1984 genocide that the Sikhs faced in Delhi, it still is very captivating. If anything, beyond the story, it may even strike curiosity of the events of the genocide in October and the one in June faced by the Sikhs at the hands of Indira Gandhi and her son. While watching this movie and after reading many survivor accounts, one thing for sure, this was NOT a riot, but rather a genocide that was planned. I also wished this movie showed Amitabh Bachchan and the paramount role he played in the incitement of this genocide.
A Perfect 14 (2018)
Worth Watching
This movie is good to watch and was a good attempt at reorganizing what we consider 'healthy' and how body-shaming needs to end. BUT, they also took it too far by not establishing that there is a difference between being obese/fat and how detrimental it is to ones' health and being 'plus-sized' due to the unrealistic body expectations of the fashion industry.
Passengers (2016)
A movie about the human condition
This movie was surprisingly enjoyable. I didn't think it would amount to much considering it was to be based on two individuals who would never reach their destination. But, I was wrong.
The focus of this movie was more a discussion about the human condition. How solitude affects us and how companionship can change how we perceive our situation as we live this journey of life.
It wasn't boring at all, and anyone that likes space, and movies about psychological analysis will love this movie. Even if you don't, it's a fun movie to watch all together.
Partition (2007)
Partition Historically incorrect
As we are well aware, movies are not set out to be a direct incorporation of history, but it is a disgrace when a movie is made which has absolutely little to no correlation. I wish the director and/or the screen writer had done his/her research in this topic. All this movie does is create a forum for hate between people, while causing a rift that should not be there. This movie portrayed the Sikhs and Muslims in a very negative manor, while making the third group (Hindus) look as if they were non existent in the brutal killings of the people of both nations. The inaccuracies, coupled with the sear disregard for one's faith as portrayed by 'Gian Singh' was a disgrace to the highest format. Though on a more positive note, the actors did a great job in acting in their roles. Both Kristen K and Neve C played their rolls exceptionally. I hope those that watch this movie do not see or use it as a template for the actual historical event.
Sicko (2007)
Why is Health care so horrendous in the states?!?
Michael Moore does a fantastic job in opening the debate about our flawed health care system. What he forgets to do is follow up and explain why our system is so flawed. An explanation would have the viewers better understand how to rectify the situation and start moving towards a more Nationalized Health care System. Unlike the UK, Canada, and France; US citizens refuse to pay higher taxes. This alone forces our government to allow for the privatization of health care that we see in our nation today. Doctors refused to have their salaries decreased due to such astronomical malpractice insurance charges which are so high only because the nations citizens are more than ready to take our health care professionals to court for frivolous suites. Though we point the finger at our capital, what we need to realize is that it is our direct actions that result in our horrible health care system. If Moore were to touch on that, this movie would be fabulous.
V for Vendetta (2005)
A spectacular movie
This movie was spectacular (and I don't say that too often). The parallels between it and history were well done. We see the parallels to the holocaust, 9/11, the current Bush administration's way of leading and where it may end up if we don't wake up as citizens. This movie also showed the use of fear tactics, as we see in our current government, used to further political goals. The only negative I had about the movie was the loose use of the term 'terrorist'. Although the word is loosely used by our current administration, and maybe this is what they were wanting to depict in this movie. and if that were the case, then it was well done. but I have seen too many movies where the word 'terrorist' is misused so I error to think it was so in this movie as well. All in all a wonderful movie to watch.
Water (2005)
History twisted into fiction in the movie WATER
Though Water is a great film for entertainment, it is simply a twist in historical fact. This movie gives too much credit to Mohandas Gandhi who has been put on a pedestal by the nationalists without knowing his true history. Interestingly, the idea of sati was abolished and re-marriage introduced, by Amar Das (the 3rd master of the Sikhs) in the 1400-1500s and again enforced by the British in the 1840s. This movie would have received a higher rating if the accuracy in historical facts were to be present. It seems as if the director/writer forgot to do some simple research and thus has lead many to stray from historical accuracy by allowing this movie to 'portray' actuality in this facet of the Hindu culture.
