A Quiet Place (2018)
5/10
Great concept, but dumb execution
13 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
"A Quiet Place" has a lot of potential and I really like the concept. However, all of the characters simply act stupid and they're no likeable at all. And the way they live just makes no sense at all. They have a soundproof room inside their home, yet they only use it in one scene. And for whatever reason, everybody is walking barefoot, as if that makes less sound than wearing something like Sneakers or even socks. And they're making themselves vulnerable to the hazards of the environment by wearing no shoes as another scene shows. And apparently running while being barefoot also makes no noises at all. The movie is ignoring its own rules and bends them for whatever plot reason there currently is. I can't believe this movie was such a commercial success that it got a sequel. And don't even get me started about how stupid it is to get pregnant and give birth to a child in the world of "A Quiet Place". But hey, that's also no problem for the movie, because the baby conveniently doesn't make any noises when danger is lurking. Quite a fast learner!

Room (I) (2015)

Lacks the depths and nuances of the book
7 May 2021
First off: Room isn't a bad movie on its own, it's just when compared to the source novel, one can see that the movie lacks many details of the book. That is, of course, to be expected. But at times the movie just feels like it takes certain moments from the book and puts them together, without any coherence. One example would be the interview, which is built up great in the book, but just seems to randomly happen in the movie, without any exposition or explanation. And that's just one scene where the movie fells short in comparison to the book. If I haven't read the book, I would probably give the movie 8 or even 9 stars, but I just can't knowing the source material.

Not as bad as everyone is saying
19 October 2019
Sure, this movie wasn't by far the best X-Men film in the whole franchise, but it wasn't as bad as many here want you to believe. And Dark Phoenix is still way better then The Last Stand.

It's an entertaining movie with a great score, great special effects and decent acting. And it's not as shallow as some Marvel movies like Black Panther or Doctor Strange. And the deaths in Dark Phoenix all feel meaningful. That's another thing why this is superior over The Last Stand. While it's sad to see that the X-Men franchise as we know it will end with this movie (and not, let's say Days Of Future Past), it also could have been way worse.

So yeah, watch and judge for yourself. I for one am glad that I didn't buy into all the negative reviews.

It's dumb, but fun
24 December 2016
Sure, this movie is dumb and has a lot of plot holes. Speaking of plot: There is no such thing as a plot. The "plot" is merely an excuse for the Action in this movie. But this is exactly where it does succeed: Jason Statham is kicking some major ass here and this is where the movie is entertaining. And let's not forget the beautiful scenery, and I'm not talking about Jessica Alba here, even though she has quite a few Action scenes as well and isn't just the Damsel in Distress.

All in all, it's a great Jason Statham movie, with fun Action and a beautiful and diverse scenery. Just don't expect too much. But if you're in the need for a dumb yet entertaining Action movie, Mechanic: Resurrection is just the thing you're looking for. Call it a guilty pleasure, but I really enjoyed it.

Hush (I) (2016)

Way too predictable
15 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
The movie has an intriguing idea and the acting by Kate Siegel is great. However, this doesn't save it from the typical Genre clichés and bad writing. Needless to say some of the most obvious movie flaws ever made. Here is one example:

We see Maddie trying to load a crossbow several times during the movie, but she is just too weak and we see her fail multiple times. But then - all of a sudden - the crossbow is loaded and she is able to shoot it. And of course she hits the killer from a fair distant. And no, she is no crossbow expert and from what the movie is telling us, Maddie has never shot a weapon in her whole life before. Come on, this is just lazy writing!

All in all, this movie is just your typical, hide-and-seek, cabin- in-the-woods, serial-killer movie with the exception that our heroine is deaf and can't speak.

It is not worth it. Luckily, it's quite a short movie. I only rated it five stars because of Kate Siegel's great acting. I hope she gets to star in better movies in the future.
