The movies below are acclaimed movies that in my opinion are in no way deserving of all the praise they got.
To give you an idea where I`m coming from: I don`t like Fellini or Bergman.

Avatar (2009)
wow
This movie is an assault on the senses, it creates a world like you've never before seen. A lot of people tend see the movie as dumb and unoriginal. But they don't realize that intelligence is to be found in all aspects of filmmaking, in its soundtrack, its direction, its special effects, etc. And if its story indeed isn't the most original or ingenious, it really doesn't have to, because after all film is a visual art. And Cameron is a visual filmmaker, who's entire body of work consists of films bent on getting the heartbeat UPP. And he succeeds so brilliantly! So again, Avatar is not a book, so we shouldn't dismiss it because its dialogue isn't the greatest or its characters not all that interesting, especially when the movie has so much going for it. The most impressing aspect of the movie is the planet and the alien flora and fauna, brought to live with dazzling eye for detail.
Cameron really went all out here and he should be respected for taking the risk here! Because this is not a remake, not another film in a billion dollar series, not an adaptation of a world renowned book, this is a very typical and visually revolutionary movie, which could really go anywhere (gross wise). John Carter proved that last year.
The Ledge (2011)
Stupid movie
Amateuristic, dull and stupid. The anti-religion overtones are embarrassing. Basically, according to this movie believers are nut cases and atheists are intelligent, kindhearted folks. The main character at one point refers to 9-11 and how those crimes were motivated by religion, and how that proves that religion is the cause of chaos and destruction. The idiot writer of this movie doesn't realize that people have used all kinds of things as reason to kill. Ted Bundy wasn't motivated by religion was he? Vietnam (were 100s of thousands of people were killed) wasn't motivated by religion? Romes wars against the Punic state (where an estimated million people died) had no religious aspects.
Making that point is like making the point that dogs are bad because Son of Sam was motivated by a talking dog.
Im lingering on that one quote, because its one of the few things that I can remember. The movie is trash, amateuristic writing and directing. I cant believe this group of talented actors wanted to act in it. An average episode of Homeland or Breaking Bad has infinite times more depth and intelligence.
Ang-ma-reul bo-at-da (2010)
Not a good movie
I can't remember ever being put off by violence and gore in a movie. Irreversible came close, but its virtues were always greater than the violent scenes. That movie was far more disturbing than this one, but was helped by a director with an actual vision and an interesting story to tell. I even think that, when done right, violence can lift a movie up. I love Peckinpah, Scorsese, Kubrick and even Miike.
Now here is a movie that is totally ruined by the sheer violence of some scenes. The film itself has a standard, Hollywood-type serial killer story and is shot in a very slick way. Without the exaggerated gore, the film would be quite fun, with the violence in it it becomes silly and sickening. The movie has an extremely unrealistic plot and its direction is slick and (litterally) beautiful. The only aspects of the movie which were raw and realistic, were the gore/murder scenes.. Problem is that the movie's violent scenes are in no way connected to the overall movie. Why did the director make the violence so extremely raw and realistic in a movie which was neither? For me it means that the filmmakers were only interested in out-goring violent movies of the past. The ultra extreme violence simply has no purpose, other than to make the film appealing to certain types of audiences: without the violence there wouldn't be much to talk about.
I really hate this movie. I love Miike and movies like Oldboy and The Chaser (the latter being the movie this one wanted to be), but here the filmmakers ended up making a gore porn movie. A movie with no really interesting aspects, other than the tittilating scenes. You'l find anything from rape, butchering, stabbing, decapitation and even some nice shots of a man going through feces with his bare hands.
Persons Unknown (2010)
Horrible
Just horrible. Bad writing, direction, acting: this show is very, very flawed. I've watched seven episodes now and really, I don't care where all this is going. That cant be a good thing for a mystery.
The show has not a single redeeming factor. Not one I can think of. The characters are not interesting, and very annoying. The show should have been called 'Nowhere', being that that's where the show and it's characters are heading. The show's plot is somewhat reminiscent of 'Harper's Island', but not once does it get as entertaining or suspenseful. The feeling that keeps popping up is that the writers themselves have no idea where it is heading and that they are constantly stretching this tale. The word I'm looking for is 'artificial'. Everything about the show is artificial and fake: the characters, the writing, the acting.. Maybe if the creator was actually involved in writing the darn show, it would have had some potential (being that the man is obviously talented), but as it stand it is not good.
Occupation 101 (2006)
Heartbreaking
This movie shows why president Jimmy Carter called his book 'Palestine, not Apartheid'. It shows the terrible conditions in which the Palestinians live and the Israeli policies that make these conditions possible. The most interesting aspect of the movie is how it exposes the absolute biased and twisted picture that has been painted of the conflict in the media. The media has somehow managed to convince the world that the Israelis are craving for peace and that Arabs are a bunch of anti-semitic terrorists. I'm convinced that many people (not me, as I am pretty well informed on the subject) will be absolutely stunned to learn that what they have been told for decades now is a farce. The movie describes Israel as a state which acts out policies that are extremely racist, reminiscent of South Africa and segregated USA, bent on destroying a civilization and wiping out any trace of Arab Palestine. The movie also describes the roots of the conflict, beginning with the rise of European Zionism. The movie is very well made, plus it has Noam Chomsky in it, which in itself is a good enough reason to watch the movie.
