Daredevil (2003)
Worst movie of 2003 so far
I can understand why people like this movie. With a lot of humor, crowd-pleasing action, sfx, Michael Clarke Duncan demonstrating a Capone like villain out of Kingpin, etc. It'd naturally get good buzz out of it.
Now why do I think it's 90 minutes of a******?
I'll list the pros and cons:
The Good
-Colin Farrel as Bullseye. With the over the top mannerisms, and overall chewing up the screen bliss, he seems right at home doing this sort've gig. Loved the use of the peanut on the plane.
-Jennifer Garner as Elektra and Duncan as Kingpin. Garner fit the role good, (except during dramatic scenes). Duncan was probably the best choice for KP, with charisma and the badass atmosphere. But that could be in part to Duncan's natural badassness.
The Bad
-Ben Afflect as Matt Murdock. From the first frame of him on the cross, I knew I was in for trouble. Afflect occasionally tries to overcame his flatness, but he never succeeds at it. He's stale from first frame to last, with no charisma, or actual interest. When I looked at the screen, I knew I wasn't looking at Murdock. I was looking at Afflect being Afflect with distractingly bad eye contacts. It doesn't help that Murdock just isn't written to be that interesting, a big factor since they're following the storylines written by Frank Miller.
-Everything else. I know that the focus was to keep the attention on the hero, Matt Murdock, and not let the villains take over the ship. Unfortunately, he's not interesting. Murdock is front and center, while the 2 good things about the movie, Garner and Farrel, felt very underwritten. In fact, all Farrel does is occasionally grunt a line about how he missed Devil, throw something out of anger perfectly, and breath really loudly. Elektra isn't given much to do, except be the focus of raindropped visions from Murdock several times, and trying not to laugh at the hideously bad love song playing in the background. Duncan has charisma, but since he has nothing to do in the movie except wear cool looking tuxedos and smoke big cigars, I never got the feeling that he could do whatever he wanted since he was the big crime boss. I never got any kind of menace. All it was was just a big piece of black window dressing. Mark Steve Johnson manages to do the impossible, and makes Favreau an unfunny supporting character. Sometimes I'll laugh more if the audience is laughing, but people chuckled about once or twice, and I along with them. This goes double for Favreau, since he reportedly improv'd most of his lines. And for the factor of Garner falling in love with Afflect on their 2nd date, it made little sense. She's apparently so turned on when he predicts it'll rain that she sleeps with him. If he was a handsome weather man, he probably could've gotten laid just as often.
-The fight scenes. This gets a special mention. Since we're supposed to believe that Murdock could be a real superhero, one with no special powers except heightened senses, then why could he fly around like Spider Man. If a normal guy dressed in S&M appropriate style clothing like Murdock does and jumped from as high as he did with his magical spidey web-I mean cane, he'd be in for some pretty big hospital bills. And yet, they fly around like it's nothing, when it comes to the point that it's an all CG fight.
My final grade:
3/10
MADtv (1995)
wipes the floor with SNL
I always loved the seasons of SNL with people like Phil Hartman, David Spade, etc. but then the new cast came in, like Cheri Oteri, Molly Shannon, Chris Kataan, etc. and ultimately ruined the show. MAD TV is constantly funny, unlike SNL. Lorne Michaels has turned his show into a corporate series, and constant advertising and isn't about making people laugh anymore, while MAD TV has some little backlot and is FUNNY. The show will decline if movie spinoffs and separate TV shows start to appear.
Superstar (1999)
Get rid of this and give us Waynes World
I absolutely hated this movie. The only good SNL movies are Waynes World
1 and 2. After A Night at the Roxbary, it all went to hell. This movie
is not funny at all, it has the usual stereotypes, the super happy
ending, and a stupid obsession of kissing tree's. I disliked this movie
more than The Crow Salvation, and that takes effort. Avoid at all co
Road Trip (2000)
overrated comedy
When they hype up a movie where Tom Green is the main character in all the trailers, but is only in it for about 25 minutes, you know you got a problem. This is the IMDB, so I won't bother explaining the plot. You have the stereotypical nerd who ends up cool, (DJ Quall) the cool guy (Sean William Scott), the evil teachers pet, and others. The pointless nudity, which seems forced, like in the shower, is just to show you "Hey, we can get away with nudity in this movie! Isn't that cool?" I liked Breckin Meyer in Go and Clueless, but he's dull in this movie. Tom Green spends most of the movie obsessing over a mouse, which is funny on paper, but not on film. Amy Smart just seems to be used for a nice boob shot. 3/10.
The Crow: Salvation (2000)
The worst sequel I've ever seen.
I absolutely hated this movie. I did like The Crow 2 in a strange sort of way. The first was good. This movie makes the second movie look like Schindlers List. The acting was terrible, especially by Eric Mabius, who is an embarrassment to the series. The "action" in this movie is horrible. Theres only 1 real action sequence, and its so stupid. And when you have a good actress like Kirsten Dunst reduced to a whiny female lead, it only makes it worse. I'd rank this in the top 10 worst films ever, only being beaten out by Superstar.
Jeepers Creepers (2001)
irritating horror movie
In the age where teen horror movies come out by the dozens, more and more movies come out that just wanna make you scream (no pun intended). It tells the story of 2 people who witness a strange man dumping a body-like object in a hole. They check it out and are continually chased by some weird monster. Although I admit the first half was good at building suspense, the second half turned into the usual teen slasher movie with no thrills, boring characters, and dumb logic. If your going to see any teen slasher this season, see Joy Ride. It actually makes sense sometimes.
Clerks (1994)
The ultimate slacker movie
I have seen Clerks a few times, and although I know the jokes before they say them, I can never stop laughing at them. The story is told through a store clerk named Dante Hicks perspective. He is told he has to go work on his day off, and happens to spend most of the day with a friend named Randall, who works at a nearby video store. Numerous things happen during the day, like his girlfriends revealed sexual history, his ex-girlfriend getting married and the first appearance of Jay and Silent Bob. Director Kevin Smith chose some good actors to say his at-often-times brilliant dialogue. One thing I loved about Clerks was the chemistry between Dante and Randall. They play off each other very well and seem to be having a lot of fun.
