Start the Revolution Without Me (1970)
Loved it... 15 years ago
I first saw this movie when I was somewhere between 12 and 15 years old. I liked the movie in that time and I had to laugh with the gimmicks. I saw it multiple times.
Today I saw this movie again, but instead of 15 years before, I now disliked the movie. I could not laugh with any joke nor situation.
What I disliked the most now is that it is not edited very well. It seems that the movie stops for a few milliseconds between many shot and scenes.
I now find that the humor is funny when you are a child or teenager, but not when you are an adult.
There are also some "real" mistakes in the movie. Of course it is a comic movie and most of it is fictitious. However there are some things that are not correct historically, such as Christinan, the princess of Belgium and its army. In 1786 Belgium did not exist yet, it was a part of the "United states of the Netherlands". Belgium was only founded in 1830. Before 1830 it was ruled by many other authorities (Netherlands, France, Germans, Spain, Rome, ...).
The Matrix (1999)
Rather good
Normally I do not like action movies with many scenes that are impossible in real life.
In this movie it is acceptable as it is all going on in a virtual world. Neo and co are like "computer viruses" that are breaking into the system.
Although: Dialing in with a regular phone seems a bit odd to me. Of course Broadband and ADSL connections were not usual to use by the common public in the time the movie was made (and it existence was not known well). The idea that the injuries you get in the virtual world "gets over" to the real world is good (otherwise all battery-men in the real world will only die due to aging). But it does not explain why Neo arises at the end of the movie. If the Matrix-guards are able to change building from one moment to another, why do they only use guns to kill people? They must be able to change other things too (like eg water flood, sickness, ...). But I must say if they did that, the movie would be too complex.
Speed (1994)
Good for a laugh
I saw the movie and, as in many action movies, found it to be bad.
Sandra Bullock is driving the bus with a smile. I think in such situations nobody has a smile.
The plot is weak, most characters are weak, ...
The bus "flying" over the missing part of the road has been done earlier (taxi). I can't imagine a bus can actually do this without any damage.
On the airport the bus is driving over something that is on the ground. Strange as the runway should always be clean.
And why has Jack to fasten the metro train to let it be derailed? Isn't it much easier to decrease the speed so it stops? I can't believe they did not get hurt at all at the end of the movie.
Howard called a few times with a phone. Why didn't they track that number the first/second time he called?
This movie is full of errors and mistakes. Many of them could have been avoided.
The Haunting (1999)
Bad
This movie is awful compared to the version from 1963. I don't have any other words for it.
I saw the original movie on TV. The remake was some months later broad casted.
In the original movie you do not see any ghost, no blood, no injuries, ... Nothing. The creepy feeling it gives you is physiological: is it really there or is it just imagination? The film is shot in such a way it overwhelms you. In many scenes (eg where Eleanore is running in the house) you always have the feeling that something scary is going to happen or pop up but nothing happens (except the scene where with the stair where Grace Markway opens a door - it scared me btw). Globally, there is not much physical "horror". But it is made so well it gives you the creeps. I went to bed afterwards and I could hardly sleep from all the noises I heard. (The noises are most probably always there at night, but you don't spend attention to it). It took me days before I could put the movie out of my head. What actually happens in that house. It does not give you an answer. To me, the movie has an open ending. The only negative is the slow start and the voice-overs (there are too many). I rate this version 9/10.
This remake is the opposite. It is not much physiological, but all physical: you actually see the ghost, the things that happen do effectively happen. It does not give you the constant feeling something scary is going to happen. The scene with the stair is miserable. None of the horror-things in the movie (eg the bed that locks up Eleanore) gave me a creepy feeling. The film has no open ending (the ghost is chased off) except what's going to happen with the soul of Eleanore. This film must have it from the special effects. It does not scare you much during the movie nor afterwards.
If you want to rent/buy "The haunting" please be sure you have the version from 1963 and not the waster from 1999.
