Landing Up (2018)
Heartbreaking
There are lots of sex scenes in this movie, but not the kind that are a turn-on to watch. Mostly it is the lead being treated badly. Even the guy who is interested in her legitimately seems mostly in it for the sex. She did give him one turn of phrase that helped him win an ad campaign, but other that that, a lot of the conversation between them is strained. She tries to keep it secret that she is homeless, but in the tragic end, the truth comes out.
This most shocking part is how low she goes to get an apartment to impress her guy that she has a place of her own. That said, I really appreciate this film. It was well acted, and seemed true to the portrayal of a real character.
Straight Up (2019)
If you liked Gilmore girls...
Have you wondered where you are on the Kinsey scale? Have you ever played the game with the line: "If you love me baby, won't you please smile"? Do you like the fast, smart talk in Gilmore girls? If so, you are like me.
I'm a male, mostly straight. I'm comfortable in the friend zone. And I really enjoyed this film.
Did did the ending imply a long-term threesome? I think so.
Surviving Confession (2019)
Artistic and faithful.
The trailer is titillating, but misleading--the movie was far better than expected. This is a serious work of art and the editorial bias of the film seems to me to be consistent with Christian faith.
The Bad Mother (2016)
What makes an actor likable?
Was it her good looks? Was it her odd relationship with her own mother? Was it that her kids liked her? Was it that the whole mix us was not really her fault? Anyway, I liked her!
The current wisdom seems to be that when you are intoxicated you are true to yourself! This movie runs with that idea. It works about 70 percent. It is a comedy, so it has to have a happy ending, and it does. She takes a low position working in an organization with the cause she said she cared about when she was intoxicated.
Read Me (2016)
Watchable beginning to end
Our hero is a man who is super gifted at reading people, but disabled when it comes to reading written texts. He has a simple kind of intensity and honesty that made me want to keep watching. Each scene held my attention. The set was very simple to the point of looking kind of like a stage set at times, but that didn't matter because our hero was so watchable.
